The best thing about living in Michigan is experiencing each of the seasons even if some of them only last just a little while. While most of those seasons are cold and snowy, we have to pay homage to Michigan’s colorful season: autumn.

Tailgating, football, cute boots, and, of course, our favorite: exploring local cider mills and all the adventure they have to offer! Activities at our favorite local apple orchards and cider mills include picking apples and pumpkins, taking a breezy hayride, and really just soaking up the short and delightful season!

Sometimes you can find a hot spot for the kids with petting zoos and playscapes; other times you will stumble upon a quiet winery and cider combo for a much needed date night. Visit the Franklin Cider Mill if you’re looking for a simple, fun day enjoying fall! Built near a river, you can sit and relax while taking in the view. The donuts are made by an old German recipe, and all the cider is pressed in-house. You can find assorted apples, pies, scones, breads, cakes, hickory farms meats and cheeses, jams, spreads, and so much more.

Here, cider is pressed with a century-old press. Enjoy their famous pistachio nut bread along with fresh donuts, a variety of pies, jams, and other treats. Sunday kids’ activities include a moonwalk, bounce houses, music, cider pressing, and other entertainment. All “activities” run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Paint Creek Cider Mill features a menu of delicious meals, healthy snacks, and amazing treats including homemade soups, sandwiches, desserts, and ice cream. Group tours are available during the week, and moonlight hayrides will take place  the last three Friday and Saturday nights in October.

Newly renovated and situated on more than a dozen acres, this cider mill offers fresh produce and sweets, alongside other Michigan-made goods like jams and salsa. Recently Blake’s opened the Hard Cider House and Winery for a convenient spot for lunch right in the middle of all the fun. This mill offers award winning attractions like zombie paintball, a petting zoo, a 3-D maze, a three-story haunted barn, and haunted hayrides.

This mill makes fresh apple cider, donuts, and caramel apples. They also have a winery available for wine tasting. It features a “chow mill” that sells hot dogs, kielbasa, and Dearborn Sausage Co.

2.Plymouth Orchards and Cider Mill

Watch the cider pressing process, pick pumpkins, see farm animals, go on wagon rides, listen to live music, and purchase organic produce. Children can enjoy a hay bale maze, followed by watching the mill staff bake pies and more.

Miller’s Big Red Barn offers a petting farm, fresh and seasonal produce, hard-cider tasting room for tired parents, smokehouse restaurant, bounce house and children attractions, and an Autumn market with seasonal fresh produce and made in Michigan goods.

Three Cedars is the number one spot for kids, offering multiple play structures, tricycles with tracks, a huge corn pit, an electric train that drives around the park (for an additional $4 fee), farm animal petting zoo, wooden train carts, and an automated country sing-along show with ample seating. Check out the bonfire pits spread throughout the farm while you’re taking a hay ride out back to the corn maze.

Uptegraff’s offers pick-your-own or already-picked apples. Cider is ready in October. They provide McIntosh, Cortland, Jonee, Red and Yellow Delicious, Empire, and Ida Reds.

Attracting autumn visitors from all over the state, this mill makes cider, spiced donuts, caramel apples, and homemade apple pies. In addition, you can choose from a variety of heirloom apples for baking and eating. They offer made-in-Michigan products, including delicious local honey.

With a playground designed for younger children and a shaded pavilion nearby, this mill is set up for kids and parents to enjoy their fall day on the farm. Enjoy plenty of doughnuts and apple cider. Every September they throw an annual car show supporting cystic fibrosis! 

WASHTENAW COUNTY

1. The Dexter Cider Mill

The oldest continuously-operating cider mill in the state, Dexter’s is situated along the Huron River. They offer old-fashioned cider mill doughnuts, caramel apples for the kids, and homemade wood-pressed cider for the big kids. No admission and or parking fees; cash only.

2. Wiards Cider Mill and Apple Orchard

Wiard’s visitors can enjoy picking their own pumpkins and apples. The mill offers traditional staples like hayrides, a corn maze, and, of course, cider and doughnuts. In October you can purchase weekend tickets for any of their six haunted attractions at their annual haunted Night Terrors events.

A One Stop Shop: Downtown Detroit Delivers

Cider in the City & Pop-Up Pumpkin Patch brings all the signature fall treasures right to the heart of Downtown Detroit. Beginning Sept. 28 and running through October 26 from 1 p.m.- 5 p.m. each Saturday, Blake’s Orchard and Cider Mill will offer free horse-drawn hayrides. Available for purchase you will find fresh donuts, cider, and caramel apples. Beacon Park will be transformed with fall decor to capture the perfect family photo. The events include free themed activities and make and take projects for kids, as well as games, entertainment, and food trucks.
