Confessions of a Yoga Hater

I hate yoga.

There, I said it, and I’ll say it again.

I. Hate. Yoga.

I took my first class when I was pregnant with my first child.  I had heard how wonderful prenatal yoga was, so decided to give it a try.  I found a studio, bought a pass and went to the classes (until my blood pressure got too high, and I was told to stop) after work.  As I moved my body into the various poses, I found my mind wandering.

I hope my centers run smoothly tomorrow.

What am I cooking for dinner tonight?

I wonder what will happen in Vampire Diaries tonight. That Damon… le sigh….

Not exactly the calming and amazing experience I had hoped for.

Since then I have tried a class here, watched a video there. But still nothing.  I thought perhaps I hadn’t found “the one” for me. I wanted so badly to like yoga. To be that person who posted about how amazing yoga made me felt. I mean I’m a SAHM who blogs, aren’t I also supposed to love yoga?? So I kept trying to find that class that would give me the after yoga glow I yearned so badly for.  The class that would help me feel the peace that everyone talks about after a good yoga sesh.  But I never found it.  With yoga, there were no life-changing epiphanies. No feeling the stress melt away (in fact I feel more stressed as I felt I just wasted time when I could have been on the elliptical machine). During and after a yoga class I felt nothing. Nada. Zip.

So I came to the realization that I do not like yoga. I hate all the be still, take a deep breath in, and let it out slowly. It does nothing for me. Absolutely nothing. Instead of calming me down it just makes me more jittery and slightly agitated.  I wonder when we can speed things along and move on to the next pose.  I’ve never been one to sit still (ask my husband he can attest to the fact that I am always moving), so why on earth would it be any different for yoga? In the end, perhaps I did get an epiphany from yoga.  The epiphany that I don’t like yoga.  More importantly that I don’t like yoga.

I repeat it’s OK to not like yoga. It is just not for me. At all. I am a stay at home mom.  I am a blogger.  I am a coffee and wine lover.  But a yogi?  I am not.  No matter what, you will never see #yogiforlife or #namaste  (unless it’s #namasteinbed) on my Instagram feed. Sure I own a pair (or two or three) of yoga pants, but you know what?  They are great for when I bust a move with my kids in the kitchen or when I’m lifting weights or better yet, going on a run. Why keep trying to force myself to like something, when in the end, I’m left unhappy and unsatisfied? So I decided to part ways with yoga, and enjoy the things that do bring me joy and peace.

To be Understood {an Ode to my Girlfriends}

“One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood”

–Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Philosopher

I truly feel that the girl friends I have at this point in my life do understand me, and for the most part I understand them as well. I am very fortunate in that I have a few girl friends who go all the way back to my childhood, many more that have known me for 15+ years, as well as a new handful that I have made in recent years. These women represent different phases of my life, with the knowledge of me that goes along with it. We have many shared experiences, as well as experiences that are unique to one or few.

I went through a period of time after having kids where I felt like I just couldn’t devote the attention to maintaining all of the friendships I had made over the years. I was scrambling around all day trying to tackle my endless to-do list, working full time, honoring family obligations, taking care of my growing children, staying connected with my husband, maintaining my house, keeping up with kid’s lessons and their social commitments. Who has time to hang out with girl friends? Similarly, many of them were having kids and struggling with the same issues I was. We would try to “schedule” outings, dinners, parties, etc. but inevitably a babysitter would fall through, the kids would get sick, some sort of catastrophe would happen and we would put it off another month, and then another.

I realized that I was starting to feel disconnected from them and the life I knew before I had kids, as well as the identity I had known for so long. I was so focused on trying to arrange these scheduled functions that I failed to realize that connecting with my girl friends didn’t mean I had to do anything other than reach out and touch base with them on a regular basis.  I needed these women, and I needed to be there for them as well.  I also realized that to better care for myself that I had to make sure that I made these friendships a priority, even if it was a quick lunch during the week, or a drink after work once in awhile.

These women have helped me grow as a person, become more confident and comfortable in my own skin, and given me the support I need to take on life’s challenges. My fellow mommy friends let me blow off steam about the stress and frustration of being expected to be the “perfect mom”, the pressures of trying to manage it all, and vent about how our husband’s seem so clueless about how hard this is. My non-mom friends pull me out of my comfort zone, remind me that there is more to life than kid activities, and make me feel more like I did before I was a wife and mother. My girlfriends that I grew up with know the crazy person that I was before I settled into this life, and have a complete context of where I came from.  They know my history, my stories, and can read me without me having to say a word. My new girl friends who I have met through work, or through my kids are such a great sounding board for all of the day-to-day hassles that my life now involves, and help me navigate these new murky waters.

What all of these women have in common is that they are amazing, smart, beautiful, funny, supportive, loving, kind, patient, and immensely important to my mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, as well as my SANITY!! To all of my girlfriends…Thank you! Thank you for understanding me, and I hope that I make you feel “understood” as well.

I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie

I’ve had a lot of hobbies throughout my life, and I’ve tried a variety of self care activities, but reading is the one that has remained the most constant. My parents claim I started reading when I was three years old. I read in the car, at the dinner table, on vacation, holed away in my bedroom, in my tree house, and anywhere I could find an extra minute to flip through just a few more pages.

I devoured series like The Babysitter’s Club, Dear America, and The Saddle Club in elementary school. I obsessed over Harry Potter in high school, as well as classics like Anna Karenina and Pride and Prejudice. In college I read more historical fiction than you probably even knew existed. I’ve identified with different characters depending on what I was going through in my own life, and I remember them like old friends.

Now as a parent whose spare time is more precious than ever, I’ll still read almost anything. Psychological thrillers, fantasy, and yes, even guilty-pleasure chick lit from time to time. (Who among us didn’t thoroughly enjoy Big Little Lies?) Mama needs an escape, even from this life that I feel so lucky to have that is mostly lovely most of the time, and there is no escapism like immersing yourself in a book.

Could I use this time to exercise or sleep or finally attack some project I’ve had pinned for months? Yes. Could my house be cleaner? Absolutely. But do I also spend too much time browsing social media and re-watching old episodes of The Office? Also yes. Most of us do have time to read, at some point throughout the day. We have to carve it out for ourselves, but it is so worth it.

There is plenty of research that explains why reading is helpful for your children’s development, and you set a great example for your kids by reading yourself. But I’m not asking you to do it for them; I’m asking you to do it for you.

We’re already reading constantly throughout the day: skimming e-mails, texts, Facebook posts, Twitter, online news articles, reciting children’s books over and over again. But at night when the house is quiet, it is a kind of therapy to feel the weight of a book in your hands, to watch your bookmark progress across the binding, to invest hours into something and feel rewarded by its conclusion.

I want to live in a world where we discuss good books like we discuss good TV. I love an intriguing Game of Thrones theory as much as (or more than) the next person, but I also want to talk about the cliffhanger at the end of the most recent Robert Galbraith novel and whether or not you predicted the twist in the latest Gillian Flynn-style thriller.

Join Goodreads. Ask your friends what they’re reading, and pass a few books along to them. Start a book club. And tell me in the comments what you’ve been reading lately that you can’t put down. George R. R. Martin wrote, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” Life is too short to not live it a thousand times.

Detroit Moms Blog’s Ultimate Holiday Guide 2017

Ultimate Holiday Guide-8

We are halfway through November and with plans for Thanksgiving feasts are in place we are also looking ahead to December and all of the fun activities that come with the holiday season. Each of the below images will take you to a guide specific to that topic. From holiday lighting to parades, visits with Santa to festivals, this will be your BEST resource for all things Christmas! Or just your favorite holiday guide! Did we miss an event? Let us know in the comments so we can add it to the list!

Table for One

Holidays are my favorite time of year. I love a good party, a good theme, good food, and most of all . . . I love family. My vision for my life was one of family dinners surrounded by the ones I love: my handsome husband and my rambunctious children. Beautiful chaos.

Fast forward to my current state of reality. These days, I get to enjoy that beautiful chaos (minus the husband) every other holiday. The next eighteen years of holidays have been solidified into a court-mandated schedule. One year off, one year on.

This is my first year “off.” I will be celebrating Thanksgiving all by my lonesome, while my daughter will be celebrating with her father. For some reason, this reality struck me in June. I will be alone for the holiday. Cue the emotional breakdown. I was grief-stricken; heartbroken all over again, devastated, depressed, and distraught. I wanted to scream and cry. The rest of my family is scattered throughout different cities and the one person who I want to be with, my incredible child with a beautiful heart, will be gone.

Poor, sad, Candice. I threw myself a pity party and complained in a buzzed stupor to anyone who would listen. The invitations came rolling in. While I appreciate the well-intentioned friends and family offering to feed me, I know that if I can’t be with the one I want to be with, I really don’t want to be with anyone.

Then another thought hit me and I got a bit excited . . . Zingerman’s caters Thanksgiving. Even for one person. I don’t have to cook. I don’t have to clean. I don’t have to share stuffing with anyone. I can have a mini pecan pie, all by myself. I can buy a new outfit and go to church, all by myself. I can splurge on a bottle of Duckhorn and enjoy it, all by myself. I will light pumpkin spice and vanilla candles all around until it smells like I spent the weekend baking. I will Christmas shop from my couch. I will dig out the Elf on the Shelf and Christmas decorations.

But most of all . . . I will GIVE THANKS.

To all of the friends and family who have supported me through the past two hellish years; for surprising me with gift cards, dinners, wine; for loving me when I felt I was at my absolute worst. And on Saturday morning? I will pick up my greatest gift and blessing. And together we will cook and bake and craft and slip into our Christmas pajamas early. We will decorate our tree and we will celebrate our own Thanksgiving. Our love and thanks and joy are not dictated by a silly calendar, they are alive every single day. And since our time together is split, I make sure that we show love, thanks, and joy any chance we can.

Working Mom Probs

Tuesday night and my husband does the cooking since he beats me home. It’s a race against the clock to get everyone fed, always. The kids are hungry and whiny. I just walked in the door from my one-hour commute and feel like I could collapse at any second. My toddler is at my side, clenched to my hip the second I take my shoes off.

There is often bickering, sometimes laughter. Always hugs and kisses, and the sweet “Mama, I missed you.”

I feel the heaviness of emotions; from both my family and me. I squeeze my babies tight. The days always seem too long. Too long away from them.

I carry the weight of my day and can feel the weight of theirs as well. It’s a vicious circle, our weeks. The little, very little downtime I have is spent in the hour after I put both girls down to sleep. I have a mental checklist of things I need to do, things I want to do, and things that get pushed further off into the distance.

Cooking is one of those things. I often say to myself, “this weekend I will make . . . ” but the weekend comes quick and we rush to eat. The time to prepare anything is scarce and I come to accept I will never have the time I really want to cook the meals I truly want. At least not while they are this little.

I want to do so many things with them while they are this little. Like crafts. On social media, I see stay-at-home-moms doing awesome seasonal decorations with their kids and feelings of jealousy emerge. Why not me? The weekends are always a time to do laundry, grocery shopping, parties, running errands. When will I have the time to craft with my girls?

Baking, crafting, volunteering at school, joining the PTO, having playdates: these are all things I never have the time for. And it sucks. It sucks to know I will never get the chance to be the mother I could be. Just in bits and pieces. I always give my children attention, but it’s in-between the living of life.

Hurry up” is spoken on the daily. I don’t always want to be in a rush from morning till night but it’s the only way it seems to be for us. I want to savior the moments, I want to lay on the couch after dinner and watch television, with them nestled in my arms with no worries in sight. But I can’t. Least not during the race of the week. Because the dishes need washing, the floor needs sweeping and possibly washing, and the girls need baths. And then I need to bathe as well. Oh, and sleep. Sleep is a must. Which is another time suck.

Not all working mothers choose to be “working mothers.” For some of us there is no choice in the matter. And while I wish life could be a slower pace – I have learned to adjust to the pace we’re in. It’s not easy, but it’s not horrible either.

Will I ever get to fully be the mother I truly want? The mother who has time for everything? No. Not while I am a working mother. And I know I am not alone, I know there are other working mothers who feel the same. Because time is something you need more of to do the things you want to do, the things that require time. And time is something you can’t get back. Time is something that stops still for no one. And time is something I never have enough of.

And energy. There is only so much energy you have to give and kids eat up a lot of it.

I do my best, I try my hardest. I make the most of the time I have. And while I never know how I am going to get it all done, I somehow get the necessary things done . . . which I guess, is all that matters.
