Clawson: Detroit Moms’ Favorite Metro Area Cities

The “little city with a big heart” will always have a special place in my heart. My husband and I started here as a newly-engaged, mid-twenties couple. Clawson is where we turned our first house into a home. As I type this, the words give me goosebumps. Our first home is officially up for sale. We are sad to leave the city we’ve grown to love, but also are excited that a new family will be able to experience all the magic that our little city has to offer.

Clawson is the place where we brought each of our babies home from the hospital. We know the majority of our neighbors based on the dog they walk past our house each day. Trips to the park, the post office, the library, and out to dinner are all made by walking. On the 4th of July, fireworks shoot off from the park across the street, and we watch the parade from our front porch. The small town feel resonates through every square inch of this city. It truly has the biggest heart.

3 FAVORITE RESTAURANTS

Noble Fish | 45 E 14 Mile Rd, 248-585-2314
Be sure to call ahead for sushi, as they are very popular and generally have a bit of a wait– our fave is the crazy eel roll.

Mojave Cantina | 48 W 14 Mile Rd, 248-291-5653
While their dinner menu is tasty, they also boast an awesome brunch menu.

Woodpile BBQ Shack | 303 S Main St, 248-565-8149
We have loved supporting Woodpile ever since they first opened. Their cornbread and Carolina Pulled Pork sandwiches are delicious!

2 FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Clawson City Park | 935 N Custer, 248-589-0334
Clawson City Park is home to a walking trail, playground, pavilion, fenced-in tot lot, skate park, and more.

Sunday Summer Park Market | 1080 N Custer, 248-259-6208
A convenient way to purchase fresh produce while supporting local businesses. We lived close enough to walk, but there is parking available as well.

FAVORITE CULTURAL ACTIVITY

4th of July | Clawson City Park and surrounding streets, 248-270-7044
A parade, festivities at the park, a craft show, and a fireworks display are just the beginning of all this small town event has to offer, which runs for multiple days leading up to the 4th.

FAVORITE PLACE FOR SWEET TREATS

Dairy-O | 208 S Main St, 248-916-7700
We love walking to the Dairy-O for ice cream on a hot day! I always get chocolate/vanilla twist in a cup with candy on top.

FAVORITE COFFEE SHOP

Kahve House | 22 S Main St, 248-979-3589
Though I’ve never been yet, I’ve heard Kahve House has great coffee!

FAVORITE DATE NIGHT

Noble Fish | 45 E 14 Mile Rd, 248-585-2314
Their sushi is SO GOOD! We love getting carryout and taking it back home to eat, but the atmosphere in the restaurant is warm and inviting, too!

FAVORITE PLACE FOR AN ADULT BEVERAGE

Mojave Cantina | 48 W 14 Mile Rd, 248-291-5653
For the margarita lover– definitely go to Mojave!

BONUS TIPS TO CLAWSON

  • 4th of July: though cancelled this year due to COVID-19, we’ve learned from previous years to get a parking spot early for the parade and festivities. Being on the parade route, we’d often have cars parked in the street outside of our house as early as 7 a.m.
  • One lap around the Woodchip Trail at Clawson City Park is equal to .75 miles. Get your steps in while enjoying some fresh air!
  • Keep an eye out for small planes and helicopters overhead, as Clawson is located right next to the Oakland/Troy Airport.
