DMB Welcomes Shannon Phillips: A Bloomfield Hills Mom

Introducing Shannon!

Hi there! I’m Shannon Phillips. I’m a full time wife and mom of two, a part-time attorney, and now a contributor for the Detroit Moms Blog! I like to say that I am “born, raised, and stayed” a Michigander. I never left. This has always been my home. Detroit in particular holds a special place in my heart.  I live in the suburbs but proudly support and partake in Detroit’s revival. And my Midwest accent rivals the best of them. I love this amazing community and can’t wait to share more with you, Detroit moms!My Life, Career, and Kids

I’ve been married to my husband, Eric, for nearly 14 years, although we’ve been together for 18 years and we recently realized that is half our lives! Wow, how did that happen already?! We live in Bloomfield Hills with our daughter, Joslyn (10.5), and son, Carter (almost 8). Of course I can’t forget about my two favorite Doodles, Beau & Bennie (Beau is the black one and Bennie is the blonde one).                My parents also live nearby (when they aren’t living part-time in Florida), and my sister and her husband JUST moved back here from Chicago a few months ago. Everybody is thrilled about that! My grandparents even live in Birmingham. So we are all close.

I also grew up in Bloomfield Hills. We used to joke in high school that people can’t escape the “bubble,” but as an adult, I just love living here again. Eric and I met and started dating in high school. We both went to undergrad at the University of Michigan and were married four months after we graduated. I went on to attend Wayne State University Law School, had Joslyn during my last year of law school, and began working at a large law firm directly after. Since then, I have worked full-time (and then some), was the sole income provider while my husband was a SAHD for a bit, transitioned to a reduced schedule, and then took a year and a half sabbatical to be a SAHM, which was awesome. Just before this past Memorial Day, I went back to work on a three day a week, part-time basis. I have done it all! And it has been quite a ride. I am still finding myself and what works best for my family and me. Aren’t we all?

Joslyn & Carter are amazing kids. They are at great ages because they still think Mommy & Daddy are cool, but they are becoming independent and have unique personalities and interests.  I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of the tween drama though. My mom calls that karma. My kids are both swimmers, as was I growing up (if you didn’t know, competitive swimming is huge in Michigan). Joslyn is also quite talented musically. She plays piano, baritone, sings in our church choir, and is a member of the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus at the Detroit Opera House. Carter also plays soccer, the drums, and sings in our church choir. All of that means I drive them around a LOT.

The Fun Facts

Beyond being a lawyer mommy, there are so many other things that make me “Shannon,” too. I love eating my way through downtown Detroit, all things Disney, also all things Christmas, tailgating, traveling, and summertime (especially if it involves boating or hanging out at our local swim club). I have an unhealthy obsession with lists and post-it notes, as well as an uncanny ability to immediately find all the things my family seems to have “lost.” I like to curl up under a blanket with a good book and coffee or red wine. I enjoy baking cookies with my kids and gobbling them up right away. And I wholeheartedly believe that it’s always a good time for champagne.

I am thrilled to be a member of the DMB team, and I look forward to sharing all things motherhood and Michigan with you!

Shannon is a full time wife and mom of two, a part-time attorney, and a chauffeur for her two busy kiddos (that don’t tip her very well!). She was born and raised in Bloomfield Hills, and decided to settle down there with her husband, Eric, after graduating from the University of Michigan and then Wayne State University Law School. A few of Shannon’s favorite things are her Doodles (dogs not drawings), making her way through the incredible Detroit bar & restaurant scene, traveling, tailgating, and Michigan summers.
