Detroit Mom’s Guide to Sweet Treats In + Around Detroit

Maybe it’s just me, but during the holiday season, give me all the cookies, cakes, and pies! I often blow the dust off of my stand mixer and get creative in my kitchen. My late grandmother’s Lemon Meringue recipe is a staple, and a Kentucky Derby Pie I’ve put my own twist on makes an appearance on my family’s table.

Sometimes, my sweet tooth has specific cravings–cravings for cookies, or cupcakes, or cakes that I have not yet mastered. If you’re looking to sweeten your holiday gathering, family dinner, or just a late-night craving, this list of places to find sweet treats in and around Detroit will be your go-to. You can reference this list all holiday season for special holiday treats, and beyond!

Here are the BEST places to find sweet treats in + around Detroit!

Astoria Pastry Shop | Detroit + Royal Oak

Astoria offers a variety of special sweet treats from ice cream to decadent brownies. As a teen, I would venture to the Greektown location for their amazing oatmeal cookies (that they still offer!). In my adult years, I still get the cookie, and I now add in a lemon bar. It’s the perfect treat for myself. This is a one-stop shop kind of bakery, offering tarts, pastries, coffee, ice cream, and more!

Baked by Sherray | Online

Sherray is offering so many sweet holiday goodies! She has decorated sugar cookies, New Year’s Eve cookies, and cookie decorating kits that are perfect for kids and adults alike. She has a limited cookie menu right now as she recently re-opened her business–but she’s definitely worth checking out!

Bakehouse 46 | Various Locations

With locations throughout Metro Detroit (Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Grosse Pointe, Plymouth, Rochester, and a new Ferndale location!), you are sure to be pleased with the sweet offerings from Bakehouse 46. Each location houses a menu full of breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and two of my favorite things from the local Blake’s Cider Mill–donuts and cider!

I love that they switch up their cupcake flavors monthly and offer all flavors in both mini and regular size. The minis are my go-to, and I have not had a disappointing flavor! And here’s a little secret: if you’re in the Grosse Pointe area, every Wednesday, they offer BOGO for any of their full-sized cupcakes!

Cannelle | Detroit

These pastries are elevated and sure to impress any guest. The pastry offerings are like a work of art. The bakery is filled with fresh bread, croissants, and savory options. It’s so hard to pick a favorite here, but this is definitely a “treat yourself” type of bakery!

Grab something for yourself after you have strolled the Holiday Markets in Downtown Detroit. Locations are also in Ann Arbor and Birmingham!

Detroit Cookie Company | Various Locations

Known for their insanely delicious flavors of cookies, this woman-owned business is a staple for any cookie lover! With locations in Ann Arbor, Ferndale, and St. Clair Shores, you are sure to find something you love with the daily 25+ flavors that are offered.

They also have cookies to match any time of the season, but I must admit, my favorite isn’t a cookie. My absolute favorite–and it rivals with everything else they offer–is their Cinnamon Rolls! Don’t look for these if you are on a diet! They are so warm and gooey and delicious and only available on the weekends, and they sell out fast!

For the Love Of Sugar | Detroit

It truly is hard to pick one favorite thing here at For the Love of Sugar. I had not experienced pillow-soft macarons until I discovered this midtown-based bakery. The celebration platter they offer allows you to pile on cookies, brownies, macarons, and/or their cake slices. You can order their cake by the slice, whole, or get one specially made with their brilliant artwork. The treats here will elevate any event you’re having!

Good Cakes and Bakes | Detroit

This LGBTQIA+ and Black-owned bakery is known throughout Detroit for their vegan options. They also ship nationwide! They are known for their strawberry crunch cake. My favorite has to be the 7Up Cake. It is divine! You can find their amazing treats at their Livernois location, and their new location in the alley of Columbia Street located in Downtown Detroit.

JoJo’s Shake Bar | Detroit

If you are looking for a place to overindulge, JoJo’s Shake Bar is where you can find it! They are known for their over-the-top shakes and I must say that their seasonal selections are top notch! The Girl Scout Shake gives me all the nostalgia feels with the marshmallows and dark chocolate peppermint flavor.

Located on Columbia Street in Downtown Detroit, they now have a Winter Wonderland. They have upcoming family-friendly activities that will definitely put you in a mood! It is the perfect place for a family outing. You can have dinner, an adult cocktail, and of course the amazing shakes!

Lush Yummies Pie Co. | Ferndale

Lush Yummies was crowned as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things in 2020 and has solidified this local jewel as a national treasure. Known for their signature Lemon Butta Pie, you can find this Detroit-based sweet treats brand in local Meijer stores, on Saturdays during Eastern Market, and in their *new* bakery which just opened on December 2nd! They also ship nationwide.

My absolute favorite is their signature Lemon Butta Pie. For this holiday season, I plan to get my hands on their Peach Butta Caramel Cake that’s restocking December 22nd!

Modern Cone | St. Clair Shores

Just because it’s chilly, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a cool treat. Modern Cone has an innovative selection and warm treats to also enjoy. My son is obsessed with the Ice Cream Nachos. Yes, you read that correctly! They are the only place I know that offers Ice Cream Nachos. You can build nachos or a stacker with the many delicious options they offer.

A staple of mine is the Lemon Cheesecake ice cream, but I almost always try any of their seasonal offerings. Their newly remodeled space houses amazing coffee drinks and quick-grab treats. You are also still able to request unique cakes for any event you may have coming up.

Sister Pie | Detroit

Their Peanut Butter Paprika cookies are Santa’s favorite in my house! They offer an amazing Champagne Chess pie during the holiday season as well. Other offerings include a sweet or savory option for scones, lunch options that change daily, and of course pie by the slice or whole. I’ve purchased the cookbook by the lovely owner, Lisa Ludwinski, for when I want to experiment in the kitchen!

These are just a few places that offer a variety of sweet treats in and around Detroit. These treats can be quick pick-me-ups, or for guests during a festive gathering. Make sure you check them all out for their holiday offerings!
