Join us in celebrating Champions’ Day, a very awesome and very official Detroit holiday established in 1936.
April 18th was declared Champions’ Day by the Governor of Michigan when the Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings all won their first championships in the same year. The day was meant to be a yearly event to celebrate Detroit. While we don’t have Joe Louis and the 1936 Detroit Tigers baseball team celebrating with us like the first Champions’ Day, for 4 years in a row we have been bringing it back bigger and better every year.
Charles Avison, the author of “Detroit: City of Champions” and several other historical Detroit books will give a short presentation on how impactful this year in sports was to shaping Detroit’s future, and he will happily dive into any team or era in Detroit sports that we ask. All of this will be happening right in front of the City of Champions’ plaque, where all 48 governors of the United States in 1936 signed and congratulated Detroit on being the City of Champions. The museum will also be exhibiting historical sports memorabilia that is not usually on display. We will also have access to enjoy the entire museum.
