How I’m Staying Grounded in the Chaos of the Busy Season

School is back in session, and with it comes the busy season of motherhood and life. Navigating the school year adds extra stress for so many moms as we adjust to the daily routine, from rushing out the door in the morning to managing after-school meltdowns. Add in extracurriculars, dinner, and homework, and it could be a recipe for chaos!

I promised myself I’d opt out of extracurriculars this year . . . but my kids had other plans. We’re currently juggling basketball, cross country, piano, and ice skating–and soon travel soccer will be added to the mix. Needless to say, my calendar is overflowing.

Through seasons like this, I’ve learned a few mom hacks that help me stay grounded and make life more convenient. They’ve been lifesavers for balancing it all without losing my mind.

5 Mom Hacks for the Busy Season

First and foremost, I’ve realized that prioritizing my mental health isn’t optional—it’s necessary. That doesn’t mean I neglect my family’s needs. Instead, I’ve learned how to weave my needs into theirs, so all of our cups are being filled.

Dedicate a self-care day.

To start, dedicate a self-care day for yourself. Even if it doesn’t go perfectly, having a mental day in mind where you focus on you makes a difference. You may not get through everything on your list, but even one thing can lift your mood and keep you going. Some weeks, just looking forward to that day is enough.

Create seasonal bucket lists.

Why stop with summer? A fall or winter bucket list keeps everyone excited about the changing seasons. In Michigan, we get to experience all four seasons, so why not embrace them? This fall, we’re already looking forward to apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and Halloween Nights at Greenfield Village. Little traditions like these give you and your kids something to look forward to all year long.

Schedule downtime (and crying time!).

This one may sound funny, but it’s real. When life is packed, there’s no room to process emotions, and they build up. Giving yourself ten minutes to cry it out, or intentionally planning a slow day, makes a huge difference. Your kids will need that reset too.

Outsource (without guilt).

Outsourcing meals can be one of the biggest sanity-savers for busy moms, and it’s worth embracing without guilt. For me, that looks like a loose rhythm: three homemade dinners, three nights of takeout, and one family dinner out. Grocery delivery helps me keep staples on hand without running to the store, and prepped ingredients or meal kits make cooking less overwhelming.

Some moms prefer to meal-prep monthly or freeze ahead; the point is that whatever works, works. Ordering takeout or relying on delivery isn’t a failure. It’s a resource that frees up your time and energy so you can focus on what really matters: connecting with your family at the table.

Find your community.

Motherhood can be so lonely, and I didn’t expect that. There was a time I felt like I was raising my kids alone. What changed everything was finding community through sports teams, the PTO, or just connecting with other moms. Having a village makes you feel supported and less isolated. We were never meant to do this alone.

Bonus Habits That Help Me Stay Sane

Here are a few other bonus hacks to help my day run smoothly!

Habit stack.

Pair something you need to do with something you want to do. For me, that looks like listening to audiobooks while folding laundry or doing dishes. It’s how I’ve managed to finish so many books including Atomic Habits by James Clear, which is actually where I first learned about habit stacking.

Write everything down.

I plug half days and no-school days into my calendar before the school year even starts. I keep an ongoing grocery list in my notes app and journal at night to process emotions. It clears my head so I can start fresh.

Honor the one-minute rule.

If something takes less than one minute to do, just do it. It keeps the mental load lighter and stops small tasks from piling up!

Final Thoughts

There’s no one right way to do motherhood. It’s messy, it’s hard, and some days feel impossible. But taking it one day at a time, while being proactive with your mental health, makes all the difference.

These mom hacks help me stay grounded so when things get tough, I have the resilience to keep going—and the capacity to notice and enjoy the little moments along the way.
