Every year on November 11, I find myself pausing a little longer to think about what Veterans Day really means. It’s easy to let the day slip by as just another date on the calendar. But for me, it’s a reminder to slow down, reflect, and say thank you to the men and women who have served our country.
I don’t have to look far to see the impact of veterans. Some are family members, neighbors, coworkers, or even strangers I pass at the grocery store wearing a cap that tells part of their story. Each of them carries experiences and sacrifices that most of us will never truly understand.
Veterans Day reminds me that freedom is not something we should take for granted. It’s something that was earned and continues to be protected by people willing to give so much of themselves. This year, I want to be more intentional about honoring veterans in my own small ways. That might mean attending a local ceremony, reaching out to someone I know who has served, or simply saying “thank you” when I cross paths with a veteran. It’s not about grand gestures—it’s about showing genuine gratitude.
Why Veterans Day Matters
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Day originated in 1919, first known as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I when the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. In 1938, it became a legal holiday as Armistice Day, mainly to honor World War I veterans. In 1954, the name was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in order to honor veterans of all wars.
Today, it honors all who have served, past and present, across every branch of the military. It’s a reminder of the freedoms we enjoy and the people who helped secure them.
Veterans Day vs. Memorial Day
Veterans Day honors all veterans, living and deceased, with a focus on thanking living veterans for their service. Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday in May, honoring military personnel who died in service to the nation.
A Day for Reflection + Unity
Veterans Day is not only about recognizing service members. It is also about reminding ourselves of the values of resilience, dedication, and unity. As we go about our busy lives, taking a moment to remember the meaning behind this day can help us all appreciate the strength and sacrifice of those who serve.
Some simple ways to show gratitude include saying thank you to a veteran, supporting veterans in your community, or attending a local ceremony. You can also listen to their stories and learn from them. Or, invite a veteran out to one of the many places that will be honoring them with discounts and deals. Ask them about their story if they are willing to share.
Honoring Veterans Day With Kids
My children are both very young and do not understand the magnitude of this day yet. However, we still honor veterans throughout the year as a family. We support and are present for an organization called Running To Honor. Each year, the founder puts on a race honoring veterans who have lost their lives fighting for our freedoms.
I was asked to come on board and help provide medical care should any participants need it at the race. My older son has been present both while I was pregnant and as a toddler. It is important to me that I take him through the field, show him pictures of the veterans, and allow him to ask questions. If my kids grow up learning about our heroes and watching their mother volunteer, it is my hope that they will also become involved in some capacity when they are able to make their own decisions.
This Veterans Day my youngest and I will go to a ceremony in our city honoring veterans while my oldest is in preschool. His school is doing a poster contest, so he and I will decorate the poster and talk about what the word “veteran” means. Even though he may not fully understand it, repeated exposure will help him learn the history and importance of veterans in our world.
This Veterans Day, let’s pause, reflect, and say thank you to the heroes among us. To every veteran: your courage, service, and sacrifice do not go unnoticed. Today and every day, we are grateful.
