A Modern Twist on Your Childhood Favorites with Hudsonville Ice Cream

As a kid, I lived for Saturday mornings. The hardest decision I had to make was choosing a cereal. Now as an adult with my own kids, I sometimes look back on those weekend mornings and long for the simpler days of my childhood. Wouldn’t life be so much easier if we could go back to the sweet days of Cocoa Krispies, Duck Tales and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?!

Growing up, Saturdays meant a lot in our house. It was the one morning that my mom allowed us to break the rules and eat what we wanted, within reason of course. We would wake up, pour a bowl of cereal, turn on our favorite cartoons and take up residence on the couch in our pajamas for the next couple of hours. Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around that weekend ritual.

So you can imagine my excitement when we partnered with Hudsonville Ice Cream to introduce the release of their breakfast-themed Limited Edition flavors. Hudsonville has taken two favorite childhood breakfast flavors and turned them into everyone’s dream by making them ice cream!

Hudsonville’s Limited Edition Crispy Cocoa Cereal and Peanut Butter & Jelly flavors are here to take all of us adults on a trip down memory lane. Get ready to say goodbye to #adulting and hello to those lazy Saturday mornings. It’s time to indulge in some good old-fashioned nostalgia. That sugary bowl of sweet chocolate goodness! I can hear the crackle as I pour the milk on, and I’m instantly taken back to a time that seemed so much easier.

To top it all off, did you know that Saturday, February 1st is National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day? To celebrate this amazing occasion, Hudsonville Ice Cream and Detroit Mom have joined together to put a modern twist on a favorite childhood breakfast treat.

We created a one-of-a-kind recipe, using Hudsonville’s new Limited Edition Peanut Butter & Jelly ice cream. Are you ready for a PB&J Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwich? We sure are! Find the recipe details here:

PB&J Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwiches

Serving Size: Make 8 pastry pop tarts, and 4 ice cream sandwiches

Prep Time: 30 mins

Cook Time: 15 mins

Ingredients:
2 prepared pie crust (store bought)
8 Tbsp Fruit Preserves or Jam
1 egg
2 tbsp. PB powder
¼ cup Milk
1 tbsp Confectioners sugar
Hudsonville Peanut Butter & Jelly Ice Cream

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Unroll the pie crusts, place on a lightly floured work surface, and roll the crusts slightly with a rolling pin to square the edges. Cut each crust into 8 equal-sized rectangles. Place about 1 tbsp. of jam in the center of 8 squares, and spread the jam out to within 1/4 inch of the edge of the pastry square. Top each with another pastry square, and use a fork to crimp the squares together, sealing in the jam. place the filled pastries to the prepared baking sheets. Brush the egg wash onto each pastry.

Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are lightly golden brown, about 7-10 minutes. Allow to cool on the baking sheets. Meanwhile, stir together the confectioners’ sugar, milk, and PB powder in a bowl to make a spreadable frosting add more milk if consistency is too thick. Spread the cooled tarts with frosting and place in the freezer for 20 mins.

Take your Hudsonville Peanut Butter & Jelly Ice Cream out of the freezer and allow to soften at room temperature for 15 mins.  Once the ice cream is spreadable and your pastries have had a chance to freeze, place a couple of tablespoons of ice cream onto the bottom of the pastry and place your second pastry on top.  Push together and continue with the remaining tarts.  Place on a tray, cover and place them back in the freezer to set for another 30 mins.  Enjoy!

Trust us, this tasty treat will make your inner child jump for joy. And, there’s nothing sweeter than being able to share something with your own kids. If you’re anything like me, I live to share my childhood favorites with my kids. So throw all the rules out the door and let them eat ice cream for breakfast. It’s time to show them what Saturday mornings are supposed to look like.

Ice cream for breakfast isn’t just for the kids.  Parents are welcome to join in on the fun with a frozen treat added to their obligatory cup of morning joe!
