2020 Detroit Mom-Approved Summer Camp Guide

UPDATED - A few of these camps have been updated and we strongly suggest you still call if there is one you're interested. Covid-19 has caused many to cancel, decrease numbers or go completely virtual. We hope you still take advantage of summer camp.

Welcome to the 2020 Detroit Mom-Approved Summer Camp Guide! It can be hard to get our heads around the fact that summertime will be arriving in Detroit soon. Well, it is time to start planning for a summer full of fun. Let’s be honest, as much as our kids deserve to go to summer camp, we deserve to send them.

We know that summer camps are at the top of the list of things moms need to figure out early. While summer makes us think of popsicles, parks, and festivals we KNOW as moms that it can also be a frustrating time where you are struggling to piece childcare together week by week and month by month. From Art to Tech, Theatre to Cooking, Sports to STEM and plenty in between, we hope this Mom-Approved Summer Camp Guide in around Detroit makes planning a little less stressful and allows for a memorable summer, full of exploring and new experiences!

Cranbrook Art Museum is keeping what campers love (and moving it online!): you'll still receive the same fun experience but with added online features:

ART KITS: Making It Easy for You

Our Art Kits come with NEW art making materials for each day of the camp.  Unlike traditional camps, our Art Kits mean that campers have the supplies to make more art when class (and camp!) is over. Materials for each day are clearly labeled and ready for campers.  Art Kits are different each week!  Curbside pick-up in the Art Museum parking lot, Thursdays from 5-7 pm or Saturdays from 12-2 pm, prior to the start of camp each week.  Zooming in from afar?  We can ship Art Kits if necessary.

PRE-CAMP ZOOM: Info Session (Optional for Parent(s)/Guardian(s))

In this optional live session, we’ll review each week’s camp program and answer your questions.  This session is a great way to know what to expect for each week of camp.  Please email [email protected] if you have questions about camp and can’t join the information session.  Zoom sessions will be Sunday evenings at 7 pm.

ZOOM CAMPS: It’s for the Camper

Our goal is to have materials clear and ready, so campers can be independent learners. Of course, campers may need some assistance, but our goal is to engage campers with artwork and hands-on activities that excite them about Online Create Camps.

Camp Carvela and Crystalaire Adventures

Camp Carvela and Crystalaire Adventures are organizations that empower young people through experiential learning. We strive to make a positive impact on each member of our community by building connections to self, others and the natural world.

The following are the central ideas that help us achieve our mission:

1) Our collaborative programming model fosters strong leadership skills and independence while giving participants the opportunity to create their own experience.
2) The non-competitive culture creates a safe space for participants to try new things and take healthy social and physical risks.
3) We are an unplugged community. Taking a break from the electronic world helps us reconnect with others in an authentic way and develop strong communication skills.
4) Free time is incorporated multiple times throughout each day to give participants a chance to relax, explore new interests, and connect with others.
5) A sense of playfulness is ever-present in our programs. By having a fun and playful environment, we create a space to discover oneself and explore with others.

Throughout all that we do, we work to create positive connections between campers and staff alike and meaningful experiences for all. When a participant finishes their time with us, we hope they will have a stronger sense of self and independence, a better understanding of how to relate to and communicate with others, and will have tried something new!
