Book of the Month: Valentine by Elizabeth Wetmore

Synopsis

Odessa, Texas, is at the brink of the next big oil boom in 1976. While the men are ready for the coming good fortune, the women are fearful of the violence that always seems to come with a big boom.

The day after Valentine’s Day, fourteen-year-old Gloria Ramírez appears on the front porch of Mary Rose Whitehead’s ranch house, barely alive, after an attack in a nearby oil field. In Odessa, justice is often taken into the hands of its citizens in churches and bars, before the courts can get their hands on the case.

Told through the alternating points of view, Valentine tells the story of women’s strength and vulnerability, and explores the intersections of violence and race.
