With the arrival of a new baby comes the lovely postpartum stage and that unwanted rollercoaster of emotions. The ones that leave you pulling at any little bit of joy you can possibly find. While you’re soaking in that sweet newborn smell and all the snuggles you could possibly want, you’re also dealing with exhaustion and quite possibly a touch of those baby blues. Therefore, having beautiful smelling flowers in our home makes the biggest difference. Not a week goes by that I’m not surrounded by a beautiful arrangement of flowers. They make me happy and in this current newborn stage, I need to create a calming environment for myself and this tiny little human. Thankfully, fresh flowers do just that!
When you’re pregnant everyone is concerned about you and making sure you aren’t stressed or overwhelmed. Then the baby comes and all of that changes. Everyone is now consumed with that sweet little baby and the state of their well-being. But what about mom?! Where does she fall into all of this? Well, I’m here to express how important it is to make a little time for YOU! Try to find ways to relax and destress even when it feels next to impossible. Seek out the little things that make you happy and help get you through the day. For me, it’s as simple as a bouquet of fresh flowers perfectly placed on our table, a brisk walk to clear my mind or a good book with a cup of tea.
Were you aware that a UNF research study shows that flowers actually do have an impact on our stress levels in a positive way? According to a recent survey, 68 percent of people feel stress on a weekly basis, and 32 percent are stressed every day. You probably aren’t too surprised by this but we find it extremely alarming. As women, we fall into the majority of people affected by stress. We stress about our children and our husbands, our household obligations, finances and our health. Ready to relieve that stress a little? Stop by your florist, experience the colors, fragrance and different varieties, and pick up your favorite flowers. With science backing this one there’s no reason to deny yourself those beautiful flowers.
According to lead researcher Erin Largo-Wight, Ph.D., Associate Professor of University of North Florida’s Department of Public Health,
” There is a growing body of research that illustrates how environmental design positively impacts health. Now it is both intuitive and scientifically known that adding elements of nature, like flowers, to interiors promotes well-being.”
With my postpartum days in full swing, I will be gifting myself flowers because I want to experience all of their benefits. I think it’s safe to say after hearing that flowers significantly improve one’s mood I will be gifting all new moms a beautiful arrangement of flowers to generate a meaningful effect. It’s a simple gesture that goes a long way, especially during those first few weeks.
Erin Largo- Wright also stated that “When life seems to be a constant state of frenzy, flowers can provide us with a much-needed moment of calm.” I have to say that I couldn’t agree with this statement more. After a day of caring for a screaming newborn, chasing a toddler around and dealing with school pickup and drop off, there’s nothing better than having a vase of flowers there to greet you. There really is calmness that comes with having flowers in your home.
