I am a library fan, a Kindle fan, and a fan of borrowing books from friends as well as listening to an occasional audiobook. But I am, first and foremost, a book store fan.
There is something special about holding the weight of a book in your hand, the commitment of ownership, and the smell of fresh paper. Although the convenience of Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Target cannot be denied, I love supporting local small businesses.
Whether you prefer to share an outing with your littles or take a solo trip to quietly peruse at your leisure, here are nine metro Detroit bookshops to visit:
John K. King (Detroit & Ferndale) – For unique and rare treasures. The Detroit location contains four stories of used books. You’ll be handed a map upon your arrival.
Pages Bookshop (Detroit) – A charming shop in Northwest Detroit with a resident cat named Pip.
Source Booksellers (Detroit) – Exclusively non-fiction with a large selection of Detroit and Michigan books.
Book Beat (Oak Park) – Offering an extensive selection, including a large section for children, with a mix of new and used books.
Paper Trail Books (Royal Oak) – They have a play area with toys in the kids’ section to occupy your little ones while you shop.
Library Bookstore (Ferndale) – Conveniently located in downtown Ferndale while you’re exploring other shops and restaurants on Nine Mile.
Detroit Book City (Southfield) – They support Black, Indie, and local authors and carry a variety of genres, including rare African American books.
My Little Paris Cafe & Bookstore (Northville) – Offering crêpes, hot beverages, and books. What more could you ask for?
