Every year, my husband and I join many metro Detroiters in attending the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Charity Preview. The black tie gala, established 42 years ago is amongst the world’s largest single night charity fundraiser. This year was no different, as $5.1 million was raised for children’s charities amongst southeastern Michigan.
Although, it is important for us to support the charitable aspect of the gala, we largely attend as a part of a professional commitment. Getting black tie ready and downtown by 5 p.m. on a Friday is no easy feat, being out late is even harder for this mama these days. I halfheartedly threw on my three-inch heels and trekked to Cobo Hall this year, but I was glad I did!
The first thing I noticed was how happy everyone was! Cobo was packed with couples in their finest attire, and everyone I made eye contact with was smiling. The affair is for a good cause, full of great new cars, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the innovative and optimistic atmosphere of 2018 in Detroit.
I am not a car expert or fanatic, but here are some highlights from a Detroit mom:
- For a Fun, Off Road Vehicle visit the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon featuring a fold down windshield. This car was a definite not to miss attraction, drawing big crowds and a lot of interest.
- The Kid Favorite was hands down the new INDYCAR’s race car for the upcoming season. Need I say more? My six year old loved the pictures I sent him from the show!
- An Overall Fan Favorite and luxurious choice was found in the 2018 Lincoln Navigator. This car was by far my favorite, and Detroit News readers agreed selecting it as their top choice from the show.
- For some laughs, visit the Cadillac’s Carpool Karaoke booth. Stop by and make your own recording!
Check it out for yourself in comfy shoes versus heels! NAIAS is open to the general public through January 28. Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for children aged 7-12 years. Visit https://naias.com/ for more information.
Family Day at NAIAS will be held Friday January 26 featuring live music, interactive actives for kids and appearances from champion drivers. The event is free, sponsored by WXYZ-TV Channel 7 and held in the Cobo Center Atrium.
