How to Survive Cold & Flu Season with Little Ones

Hyland’s® has partnered with Detroit Moms Blog & City Moms Blog Network to bring you this post, but all of the opinions are still our own!

Cold and Flu season is already here in + around Detroit. The notes from school have been coming home daily, detailing the many viruses that our kiddos are picking up and sharing among their classmates. It’s unavoidable, and it’s frustrating!

Traditional cold medicine isn’t an option anymore for children under the age of 4. According to the FDA, these medicines are not effective and may be harmful for kids who fall into that age range. Some experts even say that parents should go further and stop using any kids’ cold medicine in children under age 6 unless their doctors recommend it. Moreover, so many of us prefer and have seen the benefits of subscribing to a more natural lifestyle.

Did you know the average child catches a cold 6-10 times a year?! So what’s a busy mom to do when her child is sick, and EVERYONE needs the benefit of a good night’s sleep?

coldcough_valuegrape_front_facing

In our family, we turn to the modern day version of my Grandmother’s home remedies: Hyland’s®! When the nasty cold starts going around pre-school and all three of my kiddos catch it, I find that Hyland’s® offers the perfect combination of easing the cold symptoms while also being completely free of any artificial color and flavors and free of stimulant side effects.

Like any mom, I want the absolute safest and best products for my children, but it’s not always the most budget friendly option. That’s why I love Hyland’s® stance on making homeopathic remedies readily available and affordable to EVERY family. Imagine my excitement when I discovered their 4 Kids Cold ‘n Cough Day and Night Combo Pack with Natural Grape Flavor on the shelves at Costco! Check out this amazing winter essential, available now – just in time for #CostcoMomHour! – through February 2017. Wondering what Costco Mom Hour is?

I could go on and on about the benefits of Hyland’s® all day long, but I think the company says it best themselves:

Hyland’s® homeopathic medicines provide a safe and effective solution to health care issues that affect the entire family, from infants to seniors. We have always been driven by the simple scientific proof of how the body can call upon its own natural defenses to heal and restore balance. This is the basis of homeopathic medicine.

Today, as countless conventional medicines developed by others prove to produce complicated or even harmful side effects, the need for natural homeopathic medicines that work without side effects is increasing. Hyland’s stands as a leader in innovations that answer to the changing health needs of our modern world. Hyland’s is committed to helping your kids get back to feeling like themselves.

And that’s exactly what all moms want, right? Our kiddos to get back to feeling like themselves, and everyone back to sleeping through the night.

Don’t Forget Us

We were eating dinner quickly as the baby slept and our 3 year old played. It was probably the first alone time we had since the baby arrived. There wasn’t much talk going on at the table. We were both exhausted and silence is exactly what we wanted. My husband eventually looked at me and said “Hi, what’s your name? It’s nice to meet you.” We both laughed and I jokingly responded, but that joke out of his mouth had so much truth to it.

Our evenings use to be filled with binge watching TV and socializing with friends, but now the TV plays enough “Doc McStuffins” that we have memorized the episodes. We use to spend evenings reading books, news articles aloud, and staying up late in bed, but we are lucky if we end up in bed at the same time now. When he walks in the door from work my first question isn’t “How was your day?” it’s now “Do you want to do bath time or dinner clean-up?”

Something that we both wouldn’t trade for anything has stepped in between us. That thing is called parenting. We seem to lose sight of each other in the midst of parenting. And now that there is a newborn in the house it’s happening even more. It’s never an intentional thing; frankly it’s in our nature. We chose to be parents, but we also need to choose to give our all to each other.

We make sure to always ask how the other is doing. Granted it may be 5 hours after he has arrived home or in the middle of the night during a feeding, but it’s so important. My husband asked me the other day “How’s staying home with two kids now? Harder or easier than you thought? What can I help with?” Just those questions alone was what I needed that day. Knowing that in all the craziness he’s still wondering how I’m handling the home front and what more can he do made my heart sing.

Laughing is the key to happiness around our house. Our newborn likes to stay awake from around 12:30 until 2/2:30 AM. The first night or two of her doing this I think I cried a couple times due from pure exhaustion. The next couple nights we made the most of it. We laughed as we searched endlessly for something on TV only to resort to an infomercial about Christmas lights that you can project on your house (interesting, huh?). I ate a couple of snacks and we watched Saturday Night Live in the middle of the night as our sweet newborn didn’t have sleep in mind.

There are days that the noise level has been so overwhelming and I’ve had no time to myself, but instead of being distant I lean on him. We have decided that if we don’t take that time for each other then we will lose sight completely which is not a choice in our house.

I sat in bed the other night nursing our baby for what seemed like the 50th time in 2 hours and my husband headed to our 3 year old’s room as she screamed his name. I jokingly started singing the Darius Rucker song “It Won’t Be Like This For Long”. It’s in these moments that though I miss the times we had with just us, neither of us would change it for the world.

It won’t be like this for long
One day soon we’ll look back laughing
At the week we brought her home
This phase is gonna fly by
So baby just hold on
It won’t be like this for long

-Darius Rucker

Feeding Babies is Hard Work

Feeding Babies is Hard Work

I know what you’re thinking – not another breast vs. bottle article.  I get it.  This divide between nursing and formula moms is getting old.  But, why must we pick a side?  As a mother who has pumped, formula fed, and now is exclusively breastfeeding, I’m unsure of where I fit in.  The truth of the matter is, however you choose to do it, feeding babies is hard work.Feeding Babies is Hard Work

Breastfeeding mamas, feeding babies is hard work.  You’re sore.  You’re on your last set of breast pads, because somehow you forgot them during your last two Target runs.  You’ve become a homebody because finding a semi-private place to nurse in public is next to impossible.  When you do finally leave the house, you realize you left your nursing cover at home.  Your blood boils every time you read about another mother being shamed for breastfeeding.  You are incredibly jealous of your “I’d help if I could” husband, who sleeps peacefully next to you during nighttime feedings.  Your wardrobe is limited strictly to breastfeeding-accessible clothing.  You blame yourself for eating the wrong thing when your baby has a bellyache.  You desperately want a glass of wine and when you finally drink it, you feel like the world’s worst mother.

Formula-feeding mamas, feeding babies is hard work.  You can sense the judgement of others every time you pull a bottle from your diaper bag.  You’re never on time because you’re always filling containers with perfectly measured formula before leaving the house.  Traveling is the worst because you’re on a constant lookout for safe water to make a bottle with.  You can never make spontaneous plans because you don’t have enough formula on you.  You’ve spent hours upon hours researching the pros and cons of each brand of formula, before deciding on the perfect one for your baby’s needs.  You stress about the ever-rising price of formula.  You are extremely disappointed when your doctor’s office offers you free samples, only to let you know that they’re out of your preferred brand.  Every time you hear the words “breast is best,” you feel like crying.  You’re constantly worrying that your child isn’t receiving the right nutrients or growing at the same rate as breastfed babies.

Pumping mamas, feeding babies is hard work.  No one understands the phrase “crying over spilled milk” quite like you do.  You watch a lot of TV, because you’re always pumping.  When the TV’s on, you have to turn the volume up all the way, as an attempt to muffle the sounds of your pump.  You use your lunch break to uncomfortably pump in a less-than-desirable location.  You want to cry when your baby drinks only an ounce of an 8 ounce bottle and you have to throw your liquid gold away.  You spend double the time nourishing your baby – pumping and feeding, pumping and feeding.  You feel guilty when you make the decision to supplement with formula because you’re not producing enough.  You feel like you’re missing out on precious bonding time with your baby because you’re constantly pumping.  You think the most romantic gesture is when your husband washes your pump parts (All. Those. Parts.).  You’d be more devastated if your pump died than if your car broke down.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned on my journey in feeding babies, it’s that you should always trust your gut.  All babies are different.  Just because you breastfed your first, doesn’t mean your second baby is going to latch.  And that’s okay!  Remember that feeding babies is not an easy ride for anyone – we all have our struggles.  Let’s encourage each other and make feeding babies a judgement-free zone.

An Ode to Saturdays

As a young child, I woke up to marshmallow cereal and morning cartoons. A promise of laughter and fun with friends and family for the day ahead and possibility of ice cream trips with grandparents or sleepovers with best friends.

I lived for Saturday mornings.

As a teenager, there was nothing I wanted more than the ability to finally sleep in after a tough week of high school. To simply roll over in bed and not worry about school, boys, my hair (ugh!) made it so much easier to enjoy my morning.

I lived for Saturday mornings.

Me (very early 2000’s style) and my three siblings.

As a young adult, the only thing that actually got me out of bed before 7 am with a smile on my face was MSU football. The days full of great food, drinks, and fun cheering on my favorite team at my favorite campus with some of my favorite people, were some of the best years of my life.

I lived for Saturday mornings.

Tailgating! P.S. We weren’t even dating yet – this is where is all began!

As a parent, I wake up to the little patter of feet coming down the hallway and cooing from a crib in the room next door. Quickly, my spacious bed has barely enough room for me but as we snuggle close, all four of us together, and I get a quick glance at my husband, I realize I have lived my whole life for this moment.

I live for Saturday mornings.

Tonight I Cried (Confessions from a Single Mom)

Tonight I walked upstairs and as soon as I walked in my bedroom, I broke down. There, lying on my bed, was a pile of my daughter’s toys. We played with these toys earlier while her younger brother napped. After he woke up, we went downstairs and went about our day. I had completely forgotten about these toys. They were still on my bed because my children had been picked up by their father after dinner and we hadn’t gotten around to cleaning up.

tonight-i-cried

As soon as I felt the feelings bubbling under the surface, I rushed to get in the shower. For some reason, I feel like the shower is a more appropriate place to cry. For one, it’s private. And two, I can hide how much I’m actually crying with the water.

So I sat in the shower, and cried. I clutched my chest because it felt like my heart was actually breaking. I cried because their childhood is split between two households. I cried because my divorce has forced me into the role of a part time parent. I cried because I did not grow and birth children to only spend fifty percent of the time with them.

Ever since I stepped into this single mom role, I am finding that I cry All. The. Time. I cry when I’m driving and look back to see the empty carseats. I cry when I drive past their daycare/preschool on days that are not my day to pick them up. I cry when I walk in their rooms at night to put laundry away and I’m reminded why they aren’t in their beds sleeping. I cry when my daughter tells me she wants to go back to her old home (“the home with mumma and daddy and my brother”). I cry when either of my children cry. I guarantee you that I can find some way every day that I feel like I’m not good enough as a single mom; and for that, I cry.

Every one of these reasons stem back to how I am reminded of how much of their lives I am going to miss out on. My daughter is almost four and has developed the most incredibly independent and loving and stubborn personality; and every single day she says and does the most hilarious things. My son just turned one and he is THIS (imagine me holding my finger and thumb super close together) close to walking! This week the kids are with their dad the majority of the time and my heart breaks thinking of everything I could be missing. What will my daughter say when her dad asks about her day at school? Will she try to parent her little brother like she does when she’s with me? Will my son finally gain the confidence to go forth and walk on his own? What new trick will he learn and start doing that I won’t find out about until it’s my time with them?

The hardest part about divorce is putting my personal feelings about my children’s father aside and putting what’s best for my children at the forefront of every decision I make. It may break my heart not being able to see them as often as I would like, but I have to do what’s best for them. And them spending time with their dad is just as important as spending time with me.

Any single moms out there? How to do you handle the time when your children are with their father?

DMB Neighborhood Mom Groups

Hey there Mama, our DMB Neighborhood Mom Groups are waiting for you!  This is a great way for us ALL to connect with our neighborhood moms. I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for another rambunctious four year old for daughter to play with or a little mom support after a long work week and a few too many sleepless nights.  To bring us all a little closer, join Our DMB Neighborhood Mom Groups! If you don’t see your city, don’t worry, jump into the one closet to you. Lets get connected!

Neighborhood Groups

Our primary goal in creating Detroit Moms Blog was to connect moms online, as well as offline through playdates and our events. We know that being a mom is the most rewarding job we can do, but it’s also the hardest. We all need some support now and then from others who know just what we are going through! We’ve loved doing this through our larger events, but this year we are also looking to incorporate some more intimate ways for moms to connect with one another

Detroit covers three different counties and we would like to make it feel a little smaller! We’ve decided to create Neighborhood Groups that will help you all facilitate playdates, mommy meet ups, learn more about your specific neighborhood or simply pose a question to a group of moms. Whether you’re a new mom, new to the city, or just want to meet new friends, these groups will be the perfect way to connect with moms in your area.

Neighborhood Groups

We currently have 19 neighborhood groups available to join. Don’t see your neighborhood? Because Detroit is so large, we aren’t able to list every suburb – start with the group closest to your city and hop in. We’re just starting this program, so please let us know if your city isn’t close to the listed groups so we can get your area covered. Just click on your neighborhood and ask to join the group!

Each group will be run by volunteers called Mombassadors – these ladies will plan events each month with the intention of gathering people in person. Some of the neighborhood groups have Mombassadors while others are seeking them. If you’re interested in being one of our Mombassadors please send an email to [email protected] and let us know. We absolutely love our online community, but what we’d love most, is to help you get connected in person to other moms in your own neighborhoods within Detroit!

Embracing Change: Goodbye Only Child

A few months ago I saw a picture while scrolling through Facebook. Perhaps you saw it. The picture showed a pregnant woman in what appeared to be a hospital embracing a young child who was sitting on her baby bump. Intrigued I clicked on the article to read what it was all about. The woman in the picture was indeed in the hospital, preparing to be induced. The child was her first born, and her photographer captured the moment of the mother saying goodbye to her child. It went on to explain how heartbreaking it is to say goodbye to that only child status. While it was a very touching moment, it made me stop and think.

Embracing Change: saying goodbye to the only child

Wait.

Does everyone feel like that? Does everyone feel so overwhelmingly sad? Was there something wrong with me that I didn’t feel like this?
When we welcomed our second daughter, Autumn, I don’t remember being sad that my first, Annabelle, wouldn’t be an only child. Don’t get me wrong, I knew that it would be a huge change, but I was overjoyed that Annabelle was getting a sibling.

As an only child I always knew that I wanted a big family, so sadness was not a major emotion I remember feeling. Was I curious how our lives would change? Of course. Was I worried how Annabelle would handle sharing her mom? I would be lying if I said I wasn’t. But, did I feel an incredible sadness that Annabelle would no longer be an only child? Nope.

When we brought Autumn home from the hospital, it was a change, but Annabelle was a champ. She loved on her sister like no ones business. If Autumn cried, she was the first to say “Autumn crying. Pick her up!” She showed Autumn toys, and helped me whenever possible. As Autumn grows it is obvious Annabelle still loves “her Autumn” (well maybe not quite as much when she touch’s Annabelle’s toys). Plus, as much as Annabelle loves Autumn, Autumn simply adores her sister. The look on her face when she spies Annabelle is one of pure joy. I love watching their relationship grow and strengthen, and can’t wait for what the future holds (although with how much Autumn already steels her sister’s shoes, I’m a bit worried as well).

Embracing Change: saying goodbye to the only child

Seeing the love they share is why I think I was never sad that Annabelle wasn’t going to be an only child any longer. Why instead of sadness, I felt joy.

What about you? How did you feel when you added a second or third child to your family?

I Used To Judge Your Mommy Skills.

I remember when my first son Charlie was two weeks old.  My husband and I had taken him out to a nice little Italian restaurant.  Charlie,  being a normal newborn was in a milk coma and sleeping peacefully in his car seat.  Two tables down, a couple was wrangling an impatient two-year-old.  He was whining, not sitting still and making a scene.  I smugly looked down at my little angle and thought: “We are really good parents.  Our child would never act like that.  He’s being so quiet and sweet.”

I’m not kidding.  I honestly thought because of my superior parenting skills, my two-week-old was ‘behaving’ in a restaurant.

My 'perfect' angles.
My ‘perfect’ angels.

I was horrified when my friend bought her three-year-old a personal electronic device for Christmas.  Why wouldn’t they choose to read books to them? I read to my infant several books a day. They must not care as much as I do about my child.

And don’t get me started about sugar for babies.  Pure poison.  I actually shuttered at a play date when my friend gave her eight-month-old daughter a tiny taste of frosting on a cupcake.  How could she do that to her child? She must not be as good of a parent I was.

I didn’t judge other parents purposfully.  I had just been force-fed through parenting books, parenting classes, parenting blogs and everything else I was supposed to be reading that there was a certain (i.e. right) way to raise your children.  If you didn’t they will probably grow up to be dumb, overweight and most likely be in jail by they time they turn eighteen.

Let me fast forward several years and add in another little boy.  Charlie, now four, has his own kids Kindle and head phones.  It makes road trips a magical time.  I can read a magazine and my husband can listen to a podcast. Everyone is happy. He still has to ask permission to use it and we monitor closely what he watches.

My one-year-old, Henry, LOVES ice cream.  Whoops.  I just can’t bear to watch him look at his big brother with puppy dog eyes as he enjoys a scoop of chocolate ice cream after dinner.

We still go to restaurants.  But, we pick wisely and eat quickly.  And, often kids Kindles and iPhones will be brought out, so my husband and I can enjoy ten minutes of conversation.  My rule is, if the restaurant has high chairs it’s fair game.

image

So to all the moms I used to roll my eyes at and audibly gasp at (not kidding- I wanted you to hear my disgust in your poor parenting), I’m sorry. As I’ve learned the hard way this is not an easy job. Most of us don’t have the money, time or energy to be as perfect as all those blogs and books want us to be. As much as I thought I wanted to be that perfect blog-like mommy, I realized that it does not make me happy.

Yeah, I’ll be the first one to admit I’ll make my family pose for thirty takes to get that perfect Facebook picture and I still try to feed my kids healthy homemade foods most days, but some days I’m getting by on three hours of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and cereal for dinner.

 It’s all about balance, right?
