Meet A Detroit Mompreneur :: 9 Month Bump

9 Month Bump :: Kimberly Uy

The 9 Month Bump encourages you to “Rock Your Bump, Without Breaking Your Bank!”  The store features “gently stretched” maternity clothing, pregnancy/nursing accessories, Bella B skincare products and unique new baby gifts that are locally hand-crafted.

I’m so excited to introduce you to Kimberly Uy, founder of the 9 Month Bump.  Shop owner, and a momma to three adorable children {a 7YO, 4YO and newborn!}.  Her dream was “born” on October 1st, 2013 when her shop, the 9 Month Bump opened.  Kim is a “downriver” native who currently resides there with her family, and graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a professional background in real estate, sales and marketing.  When her professional career came to an unexpected end, she found herself thinking about opening that store that she had been dreaming about.

Kimberly, like many of us, LOVED being pregnant.  She envisioned opening a store with a wide selection of affordable (and fun) maternity items that also celebrated and catered to this special time in a woman’s life.  While Kim loved being pregnant, she was often disappointed with the high expense and lack of selection in maternity clothes that were locally available.  I can bet that many of us can relate to this!  Maintaining multiple wardrobes in a 9 month span can easily break the bank.  I had that professional career during pregnancy and as soon as I walked in the door, work clothes came off and comfy yoga pants went on.  Hence, the  reason for multiple wardrobes. What about the second pregnancy?! Unfortunately I found myself going through pregnancy stages during different seasons than my first! Summer + winter, fall + spring, what does that mean?! Even MORE maternity clothes, more shopping!

Luckily today, a local momma-to-be can find Kimberly’s maternity consignment shop in Trenton.  Where she offers an entire store dedicated to the mommy-to-be with varied styles, comfortable + professional, and styles for all of Michigan’s seasons, all at affordable price points.  Kim enjoys meeting with moms-to-be and helping them look and feel their best in a warm and inviting environment.

Kim also loves supporting + helping other local moms.  Her shop showcases some local talent by offering beautiful hand-made items and gifts for both mom and baby.  Let’s learn some more about this hard working momma and how she found herself on this journey of becoming a happy + successful Mompreneur!

What inspired your passion?

The simple truth is that I loved being pregnant. I found tremendous joy in the overall experience of my first two pregnancies. Even the morning sickness, swollen “frankenfeet” and incessant heartburn couldn’t lessen my pregnancy glow.

While pregnant, I worked full time in a corporate setting and wearing my pre-pregnancy clothes or my favorite yoga pants was definitely not an option.  I began searching for clothes that made me look as good on the outside, as I felt on the inside.  Unfortunately, I found that I had only two local options; neither which made me feel very special (think white sterile walls) and both that were going to cost me a small fortune (forget saving for the baby)!  I began to envision a store that combined both the beauty of pregnancy and practicality of an affordable maternity wardrobe.

My passion was inspired by my pregnancies and ultimately I would become passionate about helping other women look and feel their best during this special time.

Tell us briefly about your family and your approach to balancing the roles of mother and business owner.

We are a uniquely blended, busy (and very silly) family of five.  My husband is one of the hardest working and most generous people that I know and we have been blessed with three beautiful children now 7, 4 and almost 2 months old.

Part of my balance comes from freedom in knowing that my children can visit me at “work” whenever they choose.  The store has a large playroom that accommodates visiting children (so mom can shop), but also doubles as a comfortable space for my little ones to play, do homework or to help mom with one of her many “special projects”. It is empowering and comforting to know that my children are a part of my business and that they will both grow together.

Another part of achieving balance stems from my personal mindset.  I once read a quote that stated, “You can have it all, you just can’t have it all at the same time.” While initially this quote seemed discouraging (especially to a fellow supermom in training), I gradually found great comfort in these words. In each stage of my life there are phases, and I am learning that perfection will never be a reality.  My life is complicated, beautiful and very messy, and the only real guarantee is that things will change. I find balance in telling myself that I am doing the best that I can and that while I might not have it all, I truly have all that I need in that moment.

What has been your greatest success so far in your business, or

what are you most proud of?

My first year was spent wearing many hats as the proud owner and only employee of the 9 Month Bump.  It was a rush of adrenaline, excitement and pure exhaustion. Throughout this same year, I also endured a complicated pregnancy with my third child.  All things considered, simply completing a successful and productive first year in a new business was one of my greatest personal achievements.

Although the store has reached certain milestones and received some exciting recognition this past year, I’ve experienced the most pride in our customer interactions.  I have met over a thousand expectant moms and our maternity clothes have graced baby showers, maternity photos and family gatherings. Also, each week customers send pictures of our baby gifts being used in newborn photos, baptisms and other special events.  I am most proud of our store’s presence in these meaningful moments.

What are you most proud of as a MOMpreneur?

Just shortly after we opened the store, I overheard my then 6 year old daughter playing “store” with a friend.  She was making polite conversation, showing her the fitting room and ringing her up.  The next day on our drive to the store my daughter said to me, “Mom, aren’t you so happy that your dream came true? Do you think that maybe I can have my own store when I grow up.”  This was my proudest moment.  I had shown my daughter that through hard work and determination she could make her own dream come true.

I am also proud that we have welcomed over 15 local moms to showcase their talents within the store.  These women make beautiful handmade baby items that both benefit our customers and also allow them to contribute financially to their own families. There are many talented women within our community and I am proud to provide a place where they can come together for the benefit of many.

What encouragement can you give to other women and mothers?

Simple and basic – you can do it, if you push through it! It’s not easy and it isn’t always pretty, but it is possible.  Perseverance through the hard times is the key to getting to the next success.

The same week that I signed our store lease and began running full speed ahead, I found out some very exciting news; I was pregnant.  It was a blessing and although I felt a bit overwhelmed, I also felt that it must be part of a bigger plan.  I thought to myself, “Well, what better person to open a maternity store than a pregnant person…right?”  Ten weeks later and less than a month before opening the store, I experienced a miscarriage.  After having two relatively easy and positive previous pregnancies, I was confused and devastated.

My desire and passion for the store originated from my love of being pregnant.  After experiencing my miscarriage, I wondered if I should even open the store.  How would I feel interacting with pregnant women so soon after losing a baby?  Would I ever be able to view pregnancy in the same positive light? How would I even be able to make it to the grand opening feeling the way that I felt?

Looking back at that time (now over a year ago) with my new baby in my arms (born November 19th), I realize it was indeed part of a bigger plan. I still love the beauty of pregnancy, but I now better understand the complexity and challenges that some women face.  I am able to relate to a broader range of expecting moms and this understanding has helped tremendously in my daily interactions.

This experience showed me that I could push through and achieve my goal.  I proved to myself that I had the ability to achieve more than I could imagine, by persevering even through the toughest time.

On a final note, be sure to reach out and find support and a strong source of encouragement from someone whose opinion you value. There is always a point where the mountain seems too high and you need someone who will give you a small boost (or a hard shove) when you think you can’t make it to the top.

Meet Detroit Mompreneurs :: Bubble Club

Bubble Club :: Ella Wish and Lindsay Mall

“Having teaching backgrounds, our mission is to provide support and education for families throughout the community targeting specifically zero to three years of age. At the Bubble Club your child will learn new skills and develop first friendships in a safe, nurturing and educational environment.” ~Ella + Lindsay

I am so excited to introduce this long time friendship and Mompreneurial duo, Lindsay {momma of two, 2.5 YO + newborn} + Ella {momma of 2.5 YO}.  Their dream became reality back in 2012 when the The Bubble Club was founded.  They truly believe in helping local families grow together by providing an educational environment and a place to go for support as new parents.

I am mom raising a growing family today and have gone through those first “times” every developing child goes through.  I remember feeling alone, friends either weren’t there yet having kids or they had already been through the first “times” and been-there, done-that! I had SO much to learn, always seeking information off the internet + in books.  But I was lacking a few things, like connecting with local experts and other moms going through the same thing.  I had so many questions about breast feeding, sleeping, bathing, weening, motor skills, behavior issues, milestones, and everything else that happens those first 3 years of a child’s life!

I think I can safely say that as parents we ALL want what is best for our families and we will search for the solution that fits us best.  The Bubble Club offers everything you need to build that foundation for you and your baby.  A safe, nurturing environment built around supporting each other, building friendships, learning new skills, exercising, connecting with local experts and it is entirely built around an educational environment.  A perfect combination for growing a healthy family and a happy you.  Please be sure to give these ladies some love, they are two hard-working mommas helping other mommas in our community and love to give back to the community!

Tell us about your business and the product/service you provide.

Hi! We are Ella Wish and Lindsay Mall, co-founders of The Bubble Club. We always knew we wanted to work with kids: we used to pretend with our dolls, playing mommy and teacher, and then went into real life experiences as babysitters to our nieces and nephews. Throughout high school we babysat for local families, and became counselors at a local camp, where we met back in the late 90’s. We both graduated from college with backgrounds in early childhood development and teaching, and worked as teachers, teaching Kindergarten and Pre-K. We both married our childhood sweethearts, and went on to the ultimate job as Mommies, our oldest kids being born only 4 days apart!  We decided to stop working for the time being, and be “stay-at home” moms.

As many new moms do, we struggled with our transition into mommy-hood: the isolation, the strangeness, the love. We decided to sign our kids up for a local gym class to get out of the house and meet new mommy friends. Here, we finally had a place to talk about the spit up, poop, breastfeeding, mommy guilt, and a myriad of other topics only new moms could understand. At the time, we only knew of a few programs that welcomed babies ages birth-12 months that were also developmentally appropriate for our babies. We craved more opportunities to spend time with them and socialize with other moms. Thus, The Bubble Club was born.

Our mission, then and now, is to provide support and education to families throughout the community, focusing on the newest babies, birth-2 years old. We have built a supportive community, one that includes activities to do with our children, that not only help our babies develop cognitive, motor and social skills, but also help us navigate this crazy new life as moms. The Bubble Club has given us an opportunity to continue our work as teachers in early childhood, while also affording us the opportunity to have a flexible schedule.

What has been your greatest success so far in your business, or what are you most proud of?

By partnering up with other local businesses in the past two years we have been able to run classes and parenting workshops throughout the Metro Detroit area.  Our most popular class is our Baby Play and Grow which teaches fine and gross motor skills, language and body movement development, and social skills broken up into age groups, Birth-7 months and 8 months- 14 months. In this class we sing familiar songs, interact with our babies through play, introduce simple sign language, and read stories.

Through our partnering we are able to find the best teachers in the best suited environment to run interactive parent/infant classes. We offer Mom and Tot dance at Studio A in Birmingham and Walled Lake locations, Mommy and Baby workout classes: Bubbles and Booty camp and Daily Baby Barre at The Dailey Method Birmingham. We also have specialist in infant sign language and infant sleep training offering seasonal workshops in both. We have provided infant CPR courses, and speak at Henry Ford Hospital’s birthing classes about parenting in those early days!We are always looking for new classes, and new educational opportunities to provide for local families.

What are you most proud of as a MOMpreneur?

The Bubble Club has successfully fulfilled the need for new families in our community, being featured in local newspapers and magazines, and appearing on several local Newscasts, as experts in childhood development. Recently we were recognized as one of the year’s top 25 entrepreneurs of 2014, by Idea Cafe.

Through The Bubble Club, we have also been able to help out our community and those families in need by collecting donations such as diapers, pajamas, toiletries and holiday gifts for those in need. This has been a dream come true to both of us, working hard to grow our business, while growing our families. We are proud of what we are doing for our community families, but we are most proud of the “Moms” we are to our children.

Meet A Detroit Mompreneur :: Sassy Bambino + Heal-A-Boo-Boo-Project

Sassy Bambino + Heal-A-Boo-Boo-Project :: Amanda Holdsworth

I encourage you to watch Amanda’s video, she takes you into her world with a heartfelt peek into the inspiration behind Peek-A-Boo-Boo Hospital Shirts.

I am so thrilled to introduce you to Amanda {momma of a 3 YO + expecting!}.  Her story will tug at your heart and you will quickly see that this Mompreneur is full of passion + heart.  When her now 3 YO was only 19 months old, the Holdsworth family was delivered devastating news that their beautiful daughter had a congenital heart defect that required her to immediately undergo open heart surgery.  Certainly not the news any parent wants to receive.  Ever.

Her crafty side led her to finding a way to release the stress she was enduring during this difficult time with her daughter.  She began making fashionable hospital clothes that her daughter could wear after her surgeries and to all of her follow-up visits. Looking at a child in a hospital gown can make you feel sad.  There is nothing cute or fashionable, or normal about them!  Hospital gowns are typically itchy, loose, not very movement friendly and well, just kinda blah.  They are especially uncomfortable for active little children!

“I’ve been told that the Peek-A-Boo-Boo shirts help moms feel more comfortable in the hospital setting with their children. The kids aren’t in the standard hospital gowns…the t-shirts I make help moms see their child as being “okay”, as told by Amanda.

Doctors and nurses LOVED them, she was being asked where did you find something like that!  And that is when the magic began to happen.  She now makes and donates customized hospital shirts, legwarmers and hair bows to children facing upcoming surgeries or medical procedures. To-date, she has sent out more than 220 worldwide. What is more amazing is that she does not charge for her service, her costs are covered by grants and private sponsorship’s, and well, as a business owner, she pays for some costs too!

She felt so grateful for the heart community while her daughter was recovering from her battle and wants to give back to the heart community.  This is her small way of doing something good to help others that she is passionate about. Read on, as I am sure you are about to fall in love with this adorable Mompreneur and her adorable daughter.

What inspired your passion?
Like many MOMpreneurs, my business was inspired by the lack of products needed for my daughter. In her case, I couldn’t stand the starchy, open-back hospital gowns, so I created hospital shirts that open in the front out of soft cotton t-shirts.

Tell us about your business and the product/service you provide.
The Peek-A-Boo-Boo hospital shirts through the Heal-A-Boo-Boo Project are made for babies and toddlers who are facing upcoming medical procedures or surgeries. The shirts open in the front, giving quick and easy access to nurses and doctors, while keeping children warm. I do not charge for the shirts; instead, I raise money to sponsor shirt and legwarmer packages (and for girls, a matching hair bow). Approximately $10 will cover the cost of all of my materials as well as shipping. I do not charge for my time.

Is there a story or an encounter that you can share to give us some background on the development of your business?
In April 2013, we received the devastating diagnosis that our little girl had atrial septal defect, a congenital heart defect that required open heart surgery as soon as possible due to the pressures on her tiny heart. To de-stress, I began making her some custom hospital gowns to wear while recovering from surgery since I thought that the hospital-provided gowns weren’t very cozy, warm or cute. The doctors and nurses went crazy over them because they enabled quick and easy access to check her incision and her pulse…plus, she looked adorable! Other moms asked me where I purchased such cute gowns and a light bulb went off: what a great way to give back to the heart community after they had been so supportive of our family. I started making and donating the hospital shirts (called Peek-A-Boo-Boo) in August 2013 and have sent off more than 220 around the world at no charge to patients since then.

Tell us briefly about your family and your approach to balancing the roles of mother and business owner.
I have been married to my wonderful husband, Doug, for four-and-a-half years. Our oldest daughter is three and we’re expecting another baby girl in February 2015. In addition to the humans in our household, we have a one-year-old pekingese, Georgie.

I work full-time at the University of Michigan, so finding time to run the Heal-A-Boo-Boo project while not taking quality hours away from my family can be a challenge. When my daughter was younger, she would sit in the craft room with me while I cranked out the shirts. Now that she’s an energetic toddler, I usually work on the shirts after she has gone to bed and I’ve spent an hour or so alone with my husband. I don’t get a lot of sleep!

What are you most proud of as a MOMpreneur?
I am the most proud of the fact that my family supports me and that my daughter comprehends that mommy is working on care packages for children who are sick in the hospital. She is extremely compassionate and empathetic, which is how I always wanted my children to be.

What encouragement can you give to other women and mothers?
If you’re passionate about it, it’s not work.  Yes, there are only so many hours in a day and yes, it can be difficult and stressful, but when you find something you truly love, things just seem to fall into place.

Meet Detroit Mompreneurs :: Rustic MAKA

Rustic Maka :: Kasia Rothe and Monica Stakvel

“Our philosophy for pure, simple and organic products came from the phrase “less is more”.  ~Kasia + Monica

Meet this hard-working MOMpreneur duo, sisters, Kasia {momma of a 7 + 4 YO} + Monica {momma of a 6 + 1.5 YO}.  These ladies are on a mission to educate us women on the harmful toxins that can be lurking in our daily routines.  “As women, we tend to use a lot more products in the bathroom and unfortunately most of them contain dangerous toxins. In addition, having breast cancer in our own family and among friends, we felt that it was important to carry the message of prevention and also provide support to those that have been faced with the disease. We think of ourselves as moms-on-the-mission,” as said by Kaisa.

I just LOVED talking to Kaisa, she is full of hopeful energy about sharing her love for healthy living and bringing awareness to what we should avoid putting in and on our bodies. Her and Monica have a beautiful story to share about how they came about becoming Mompreneurs.  It wasn’t something they knew they would be doing one day, it came about during their journey to better health and understanding of what a simple life is all about.  They truly are passionate moms and entrepreneurs.

Unfortunately cancer may be closer to home than we want.  As a mom I am always looking at labels, I want to find products with the least amount of ingredients and I try to avoid products with ingredients that I can’t pronounce or that have numbers and abbreviations!  I now look at food labels every time I shop, and can easily pick the right kind of peanut butter, I look for no added sugar and simple, pure ingredients.  Simple, right! But when it comes to body care products I haven’t done as much homework yet!  And I tend to feel naive when I choose products off the store shelves.  It is scary how much information is lacking about the products that are most accessible to us.

I am happy to have now been introduced to this amazing local MOMpreneur duo who make natural products that are safe for us and our families, and the best part is I won’t have to try a Pintertest DIY to get what I know is best for my family, after all I am a DIY’er at heart and always looking for ways to keep life simple.  You can find their products in stores throughout Metro-Detroit and of course online.  So without further ado, check out these inspiring MOMpreneurs as they share the story behind their journey to bring us natural, simple, pure, organic, MOM-approved, body products.

Business Pow-wow - Monica and Kasia Kasia and Monica Discussing Skora Line

What inspired your passion?

KASIA:

Let’s just get this out there. Seven years ago, while pregnant with my oldest son, Hunter, I was stinky! And I’m not talking about your ordinary, after-a-long-day-of-work, kind of stink. This was a whole another dimension of armpit odor.

Bad body odor is definitely not something easy to face, but when you develop something so embarrassing that it’s evident to not only yourself, but to everyone nearby, you become very determined to find the solution, fast. And boy did I try. I tried every brand available, clinical strength, other handcrafted ones, and all of them failed to deliver. At that point I truly gave up thinking I will never “not” smell again.

The major changes in our household started after watching the movie “Food Inc.” I was horrified and the very next day I “de-junked” my kitchen and started to research and check the ingredients in foods and personal products I was buying. I began to uncover what is truly in them and where they come from.

Growing up in Poland, it was never necessary to check the labels, as most of the things we used were of natural orgin. My mom, Anna, even though she was a registered nurse, loved using natural ingredients to battle many bodily ailments. She used chamomile tea to wash our sister’s sensitive skin or sour milk to soothe our sunburn. When we came to the U.S. we never thought to look into the ingredients so closely and most of the time we assumed things on store shelves were good for you. I was surprised, however, by how many people consumed them without asking any questions once I realized that we should be paying more attention to what goes on and in our bodies. It was a true wake up call and a great reason for a fresh start.

When our son was born, educating ourselves became a way of life with organic, un-processed and wholesome in the forefront. In addition, these changes also transformed and improved my own health as I suffered from hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue syndrome and discovered several food intolerance’s. Since then, passion for organic, simple, and healthier living became an obsession and morphed into an idea and birth of Rustic MAKA. It might’ve taken almost 7 years to actually get here but I enjoyed the journey.

 Kasia Anna Monica

Tell us about your business and the product/service you provide.

From the very start we’ve decided that everything we do will have a reason, a purpose, why it is the way it is. For the company name we chose rustic for its meaning and to make sure, we actually Goggled it and it was perfect. This definition came up:

rus·tic, adjective

  1. of or relating to the countryside; rural.
  2. simple, constructed or made in a plain and simple fashion, in particular.

Synonyms: plain, simple, homely, unsophisticated”

The MAKA part was a bit easier. It’s actually an acronym of our names: M for Monica, A for Aleksandra, our other sister, K for Kasia, and A for Anna, our mom. Even though Monica and I run the company, we felt that all of us will have a role in making it successful but more importantly we wanted to celebrate how close we are with each other.

At the time, Aleksandra (we just call her Alex) was graduating from the MSU with a degree in Advertising and a talented writer so we knew we could use her skills. She always said it would be great if we all worked together so having her on our team makes that dream a reality. Anna, our mom, is the extra pair of hands when we need help with the kids, putting labels on, etc. but more importantly she is the inspiration for going back to simple things like she did in Poland. She is also a working mom, but she understands our needs and always finds time to help and be there for us when we need her.

From the very beginning we’ve decided we will base everything on a set of values in order to bring the best personal care products to our customers. Our philosophy for pure, simple and organic products came from the phrase “less is more”. Back in Poland we learned to adapt and use simple and easy solutions. That was the norm, be resourceful and embrace the simplicity in life. With Rustic MAKA, we wanted to continue and teach others that it can be done with personal care products as well. We wanted to change the established harsh industry-standards and provide clients with made-in-nature, organic and vegan products.

Pachy deodorants (it actually means underarms in Polish) were the first item we launched in May 2014. We wanted to incorporate our heritage along with something different and catchy for a name. Pachy are made with only plant-based oils like organic unrefined coconut oil and Shea butter along with organic arrowroot powder, candelilla wax and a bit of baking soda. For scenting we only use pure, high-grade essential oils, which makes them, perfume and synthetic fragrance free. We are now ready to introduce our Skora (it means skin) line containing many good for you ingredients as well.

Monica and Kasia at Soho in Florida

Is there a story or an encounter that you can share to give us some background on the development of your business?

MONICA:

Rustic MAKA and Pachy deodorants came to my life when I was a stay at home mom and a freelance graphic designer. At that time, I was concentrating on raising my kids, Gabriela and Emmett, and trying to squeeze in a little bit of work in-between.

When Kasia gave me a container of a homemade deodorant to try I was rather skeptical. But, I figured, sure why not. Putting the deodorant on one underarm and nothing on the other, I went to work out. After about an hour of strenuous workout, I did the stiff test and I could not believe it! The underarm with the deodorant still smelled as fresh as an hour ago, and the other one was, well…let’s not go there. I called her to tell her how great it worked and suggested to maybe make a business out of it.

The next day she wanted to know if I could help her out with the label design. I asked, “What would you call it?” to which she replied “Pachy.” I thought it was a genius idea for the product name. We spent few hours debating the name of the company, colors, scents, what grade ingredients it should contain, and…then it was time for dinner so we had to “pause” our “little” pow-wow. Few days later we met up for a kids play date and continued the conversation. It made sense for us to work together since I have graphic design background and Kasia has the in-depth knowledge about natural ingredients. We both share, however, passion for wellness and drive to educate others about healthy products. Besides, we are sisters, we know how we work, we know our values, and how to bring out the best and support each other. It was at that moment Rustic MAKA was born.

Who do you target as clientele?

KASIA:

I always said, “If mom is not happy, nobody in the family will be happy”. I stand behind it 100% because I know first hand how much pressure there is to take care of a family, whether you are a working mom or stay at home one. I’ve been both. Most of the time, moms are the ones not only choosing their own personal care products, but also what the entire family uses. We go to the stores searching for the best for our kids, husbands, boyfriends, and significant others. We are the first line of defense against toxic chemicals that lurk in those products. Moms are often the decision makers and Rustic MAKA wants to help them healthier choices. We want them to know they have options and we are a company on a mission to develop truly healthy products for their entire family.

But, our customers don’t only include moms. We have dads too and everybody in between who values wellness through organic goods, prevention, and use of natural resources provided by our mother nature. We want to reach out to those who are as passionate about healthy lifestyle as we are, and to those who are seeking simple yet effective products.

What do you believe makes what you do unique?

To put it simply, we truly care what ingredients we use. We search and search, and then search some more to find the best quality components and ways to make our products as straightforward and effective as possible. We want to set a new standard for this industry and be transparent about it. There has been a lot of talk about natural and organic and there are so many misconceptions about these words and their meaning. We want to educate consumers to become more curious about what’s in their products but also give them the opportunity to try the old fashioned remedies, solutions that worked a long time ago and see the value in simpler way of life.

Monica with Gabriela and baby Emmett

Tell us briefly about your family and your approach to balancing the roles of mother and business owner.

KASIA:

So this is me, Kasia. I have many aspirations, I am passionate and I am known for my relentless determination. I am a mom to two boys, Hunter Christopher, 7 and Sawyer James, 4. They are my little “creatures”, the troublemakers, the adventure seekers, the “let’s keep mom on her toes all day long”, the source of unconditional love, the reason I live every single day. I am a wife. My husband, Justin and I met almost 14 years ago in a dance club in Canada so the whole “you can’t find love in a bar” totally didn’t apply to us. He is an automotive designer, has an artistic touch, and a generous soul. He is my biggest fan.

Balancing motherhood and work has never been an easy task for me. Since Hunter’s birth, I wanted to be a stay at home mom but I also wanted to have a career. It might’ve been a little bit selfish to have something where I could get away from being a mom and a wife, but I knew that’s how I would keep my sanity and have something of my own.

Running Rustic MAKA has many challenges, especially since it’s a home based business. If I want to attend an event we need to cover our bases, such as “Who’s going to pick Hunter from school and who’s watching Sawyer while I am gone?” Or how can I keep my son occupied while I make a business phone call. The scenarios are endless but so are the solutions. I’ve learned that family and even my close friends are my best support, no matter the problem. There’s always someone who is willing to help, I just need to speak up and ask.

In our house we don’t have roles, there is no list of who’s responsible for what. We share the daily routines of cooking, getting Hunter ready for school, changing bed sheets, grocery shopping, taking out the garbage, fixing broken door hinges, or putting together a new bike for Sawyer. This is what married life is for us, being partners and being there for each other.

What are you most proud of as a MOMpreneur?

KASIA:

Does “never give up, never surrender,” sounds too cheesy? Nah. In our Mompreneur world that’s exactly how we have to live. We know that there will be times of trying to juggle multiple tasks, deadlines (even though we set them ourselves most of the time), and family responsibilities all at once. We push through it, knowing that at the end of the day we did the best we could, we worked hard and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I am most proud of the feeling I have at the end of the day, that I have this amazing opportunity to work side by side with my sister, provide a healthy lifestyle for my family, and make a difference for our customers. This is enough of a reason to be proud of.

What encouragement can you give to other women and mothers?

MONICA:

My life as a mom never feels balanced, so don’t beat yourself up if you are in the same boat. I don’t really remember last time I could say “Everything is done, and I can sit for the next six hours and watch a marathon of Friends.” As one thing goes smoothly and gets finished, there are five others that need my attention. Just the other day I was giving myself a pat on the back for finally seeing the bottom of the laundry basket and sending the final of Rustic MAKA brochure to the printer, when my son got sick and I ended up in the ER with him.

For me, life is about taking one day at a time, enjoying the moment, and tackling tasks that are most important. At the end of the day, as tired as I am, I can honestly say, I did my best and be happy I witness my sons first words or talk to a Rustic MAKA customer about how much they love our products. This is what counts.

Frugal Fridays :: Clean that Scummy Shower & Tub!

Hello again from Brandi and my Frugal Friday wins, ideas, hacks and {fails}.

Today is a huge win!! Living in a condo with the hubster & my 2 littles sharing one tub can lead to some scary scum and grime. We have a shower stall in kids bathroom & standard tub shower combo in our bathroom with that “wonderful” textured “nonslip” floor (yeah right).  And it’s a nightmare to clean, total pain in the back & arm.

So after searching high and low and trying many methods, a combo of a few different methods have finally {Cut the Crud} with minimal scrubbing and elbow grease! Yes I will admit I did a happy dance and squealed with joy! And yes my family thought I had finally {Lost It}!

Any way on with the goodness!

Many recipes and online tutorials use a mixture of good old blue Dawn and white vinegar of some form.  I found for me mixing {Warmed} white vinegar with my favorite blue Dawn cuts the crud with no muss or fuss!

Half Dawn and Half vinegar…That’s it!!

I have pictures… but you have to promise not to judge! I’m sooo beyond embarrassed how filthy our shower and tub were! Yes I said {Were}!

Magic Scum Remover for Shower and Tub Frugal Friday

Most people I found used a spray bottle and just shook it up really well, but I poured it on the sides and rubbed/spread it around the tub and {Walked Away}!

Yes put down the scrubby and walk away! Take time to relax, read a book, drink some tea, or do what I did and finish dinner, eat with the family, clean up dinner, get kids ready for bed… yeah I kind of forgot about it and left it over night!! Whoops!

Woke up to a blue(ish) shower and tub the next morning grabbed my scrubby some hot water and went to town, well kind of. The results were, well embarrassing!!

Take a look for yourself!

Don’t mess with your birth control: 6 things I learned from it

I can remember those feelings of panic as I walked through security of the airport only to realize that I forgot my birth control. At home. In the fridge. And there was no turning back!

I sat in that teeny tiny seat trying to imagine what my wedding night would be like without well…sex. Come on, I’ve been on birth control for 13 years, could I really get pregnant? I’m here to tell you, everything you’ve heard about that is a flat out lie!!!

You CAN and you WILL get pregnant!

The myths you hear about not getting pregnant because you’ve been on birth control for a million years is the biggest load of bolagna you’ll ever hear. But ladies, I was the one that believed it wouldn’t happen to me. That was probably my issue 12 years prior when I thought it was a good idea to have sex with my high school sweetheart because everyone else was doing it. Stupid girl. Yup, I was that girl who had sex once and ended up pregnant. Seriously, one time!

The minute I jumped off that plane I got on my phone and called my trusty OB/GYN just for some reassurance. Who cares about roaming charges from another country, I had an e-mer-gen-cy! I bet the women in the office thought I was absolutely insane for my serious state of panic. But in all seriousness I was terrified! My daughter was 12 and I couldn’t fathom the thought of having a baby just {yet}.

I wanted to enjoy being married to my husband before expanding our family. I know we already had a child but do you realize the freedom a child that can feed itself and wipe its own bottom gives you? And lets not forget the whole sleeping in thing. I was that newly wed that would never know what it felt like to just be my husband and I. I wouldn’t know what it felt like to drop everything for weekend getaways, walking around naked because their aren’t any little people in the house, or last minute impromptu date nights. I had and have always had a child.

For me, the feeling of forgetting my birth control was more of a selfish thing. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to let my family of three become that family of four. As I sat in that airport, looking at my soon-to-be husband and minutes from stepping into absolute paradise I suddenly realized that I couldn’t control every situation in my life.

Let me take you back six months prior to my husband and I getting married. I decided to cut him off.  Yup, I was going to be a born again virgin (at least it was a great thought).  Because I had my daughter at 16 I swore I was going to do it “right” the next time. I was going to get married and then have the baby. I guess doing it right the next time should have entailed cutting out the whole sex until marriage thing. To the women that do that, I give you an insane amount of credit for your self control. Way to go ladies who abstain from sex before marriage! Considering I obviously wasn’t one of them, I decided to try it out before I got married. Oh my poor, poor fiancé! The look on his face when I told him there would be no hanky panky before our wedding night was priceless. It was apparent he thought I must have lost my mind!

As the end of six long (for him) months neared he was rearing to go and I was sitting there worried about my birth control. How could I tell him we couldn’t have sex on our wedding night, seriously! At that point I probably should have just purchased a ticket, got back on the plane and gone home. But then I heard that reassuring voice of my doctor say  “Oh, you’ve been on birth control for so many years, you’ll be fine, just put your ring back in as soon as you get home.”

Well I’m here to tell you, my wedding night came and went. I listened to what the DOC said and put the ring in as soon as I got home. Within a couple weeks of our wedding night I woke up in the middle of the night and I knew. I knew I was pregnant! I took the first test and it was negative. And I only took it because we were heading to New Orleans. Although the test was negative I knew in my heart I was pregnant. As women, we have a great sense of our bodies and I knew that something wasn’t right with mine. Upon returning, what I already knew would soon be confirmed.

This isn’t a post to brag about getting pregnant the first time I had sex or the fact I got pregnant on my wedding night. It’s simply to share with you that as women we are so quick to believe everything we hear without doing our own research.

Here is what that whole experience taught me:

  1. Don’t mess with your birth control! There is a reason each pack comes with a little folded up piece of paper with tiny writing on it (that only a few of us seem to read). The exact reason I switched to the ring. I only had to remember to take it out every three weeks. Who has time for a pack of pills?!
  2. Just because you’ve been on it for a crazy amount of years doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant the minute you stop taking it. Your body may have different plans for you!
  3. Know your body and how long your cycle is. To this day I still have no idea. I know women that can tell you the exact time in which they will start and end. They know when they are ovulating like clockwork. Seriously, I wish I were that diligent and kept better track on an app.
  4. Your mucus (this word is sure to make you cringe) will tell you everything. Literally, EVERYTHING! Your mucus changes in color and texture throughout your menstrual cycle. By observing the changes you can actually predict the days in which you will be the most fertile. Quick tip – that egg white discharge improves your chances for conceiving. There is a whole process to this so if your interested in it I suggest you check out this website. You’d be amazed at what you mucus can tell you!
  5. Don’t believe everything you hear! Do your own research. Sometimes Google can be your friend and at other times you’ll find you absolutely hate it! Why is it that when you want to see what something looks like Google has to show the worst possible images ever? Again, don’t base it off of one resource, look at several.
  6. Just because the first test said you weren’t pregnant, doesn’t mean you aren’t. Pregnancy tests are looking for hCG which is produced by the placenta shortly after the embryo attaches to the uterine lining. If you have that gut feeling you’re pregnant than give yourself three days and test again.

Whether you are trying to conceive or prevent it, I hope you found some humor in the above post. I know that I am completely blessed with my daughters and I wouldn’t change a thing. I love them to pieces! And I love everything about motherhood. Even if I feel like I can go absolutely insane at times!

Reflections of a Detroit Momma

Happy New Year Momma’s, momma’s to be!

The 2014 holiday season was fantastic, but I am Tired, emphasis on the capital T! Our holiday season began with a health diagnosis that makes that tiredness even more extreme, my husband traveling for 12 days prior December 22…which also happened to be the day my brother and his wife to be arrived for a 2 week stay from Colorado, with their two big dogs. Thinking back to all I pulled together and took care of makes me tired, and a little amazed. (yay, go me!) After all, there was a lot of extra special firsts in this year I dreamed to celebrate. My goal was to keep the Christmas magic and reason for the season in perspective.

This was our first Christmas in our new home, back in Michigan!

Bro + wife to be’s first Christmas without her being with her family (I remember mine, it’s not easy to find that balance when you’re working to merge two families)

Bro’s wife to be’s first time in the D for more than a few hours…LOTS to explore and visit…and we did!

Magic – it is STRONG in our house, with a 4 and 7 year old.

NYE at home!

So, going back to the beginning of Advent. I was fortunate enough to attend a beautiful and moving Advent by Candle light for just women at Christ Church Cranbrook that set the inspiration to go into the Christmas season with peace, hope and joy. God worked hard on me to keep that going all season long – with all the extras and specials to include too! Thank you God! Somehow, I was able to keep a “somewhat level head” about me, or at least I felt that way, while working to make everything come together. There may have been some wine too. And Christmas cookies. And running. And kid cuddles. Whatever it takes!

As we approached the return of the Dad from his business trip, and the arrival of Unk (as the boys call him) + his loves, the excitement of Christmas was awesome. Questions were asked about where Santa starts his journey (after leaving the North Pole), how long he stays at one house, we watched Prep and Landing – totally fun and perfect for the boys at this age. We also watched Home Alone, maybe a little over the younger ones head, but older son LOVED it. We continued to read stories about Christmas (real Christmas, not just the Little Engine That Could – Saved Christmas), lit our Advent candles and set up our Nativity (once, a fire truck shared the manger with Jesus…wish I snapped a photo! Youngest son said it was there to help. Fair enough!)

Soon enough our house population doubled, plus dogs (I am NOT a dog person, thankfully our home has a sun room that hosted their needs just fine) and the excitement was growing. Not just for Christmas but for also exploring the D with a non-native.

A quick list of our ‘out of the house’ activities:

  • Wild Lights at the Zoo
  • The Zoo (during the day)
  • Christmas Eve worship at Christ Church Cranbrook (amazing)
  • Detroit Public Library, main branch
  • Detroit Historical Museum
  • Riding the People Mover
  • Grand Trunk Bar for dinner
  • Great Lake Invitational at the Joe (more people mover riding from Greek Town)
  • Campus Martus Park (walk by only)
  • The Henry Ford
  • Swimming at Lifetime Fitness

plus…

  • NYE @ home, with a collection of Minute to Win it Games played with both sets of grandparents + Unk and his love…
1. its all about perspecive

chirst church cranbrook

D Historical Car

Detroit Public Library

funny N minute to win it

funny S minute to win it

my love D Historical Museum

paper planes at the henry ford

tiger fun at the zoo

wild lights at the zoo

Now that we are back to normal (Thank God for school starting!), routines will return, and a sense of peace is back on our house. Not that the holiday season wasn’t amazing, because it totally was, but something about the routine brings peace and balance.
As we move forward into 2015, I am praying for strength to keep what is most important to ME in perspective.  I will strive to write more (and actually finish the post…SO many have been started that just sat there), explore more (the exploration adventures over the holidays were inspiring), pinterest stress less (right?!) and simply work to enjoy the moment. The magic was strong this year, I hope to take that spark and keep it alive all year long…
I wish each of you and your families amazing things in 2015! Here’s to keeping what’s most important to YOU in your perspective.
