How In The World Can I Feed My Picky Child?

Oh it can be one of the most frustrating parts of parenthood—trying to feed your child! Though it seems like feeding time should be a seamless part of parenting, when you have a picky child it can wreak havoc on everything. It may seem like everything you offer your little one is thrown on the ground or refused. You might feel like a short order cook with a very unhappy customer. So what can you do to overcome this parenting obstacle? How can you feed this picky child that only wants to eat carbs at every sitting?

I get it because I am there myself and have been trying to feed my sweet but very picky boy for four years now. If it were up to him he would eat nothing but crackers and other carbohydrate based products. Sometimes I feel like I’m losing my mind when even the simplest food is met with resistance. The best advice I can offer is to try somehow to stay calm and to be persistent in your offerings too. What they don’t like today they may actually grow to eat down the line.

I’m not saying that there aren’t some stressful meal times—they are plenty! I try hard to focus on some of the core things that he likes which offer some sort of nutritional value. He loves nuts of all kinds, so he mostly eats like a squirrel at lunch. I try to offer a spoonful of peanut butter with that frozen waffle that he so loves, and sometimes that helps to just get some protein in him.

Do Your Best But Sometimes Your Situation Is Unique

Picky Eater headline

Experts will tell you to try to hide healthy foods in their favorite dishes. Trust me when I tell you that this doesn’t always work. You can try and you should try, but sometimes the pickiest (and super smart) kids will see right through that and pick it out anyhow. It’s worth the try and maybe they fall for it, but it doesn’t always work. I’ve tried smoothies, grinding up veggies for sauces, and everything of the like and he’ll refuse.

We do try a “thank you bite” where he has to take just one bite of something. If he doesn’t like it he won’t ever have to eat it again. Again good strategy—but there are some days where I don’t feel like listening to the torturous cry of my sweet baby boy  as if I have just given him something awful. I try when I can, but it often results in him spitting it out or acting as if I gave him something that tasted like dirt.

What I can say is this—find the healthy foods that they actually like and try to center around them. As our pediatrician has told us, if he’s growing then it’s all okay. We center around the few fruits and veggies he will eat, offer up his favorite hot dog (no judging please), string cheese, and nuts. I do my best and fill in the gaps whenever possible. I know that he’s growing and so I have to take some comfort in that.

 I have pulled my hair out, but I also know that offering a vitamin helps each day. So know that they will (likely) not be this picky for the rest of their life. You will survive this, so just keep trying your best. Offer up their favorites that are actually healthy and try new things when you can. Sometimes a kid is just picky and that’s all there is to it. You do your best and that makes you a good mama—and know that your kid will be just fine and that they may even be laughing at the feeding game inside too!

Introducing the DMB’s of Patty Werner….

Hi! I am Patty Werner, mother of three, Certified Baby Sleep Consultant and Owner of Baby Sleep All Night! Wow! That’s a mouthful! A little bit about me…

I grew up in Grand Blanc, ½ of the last set of 3 SETS OF TWINS! Yes, you read that correctly!  My parents had 7 children, including 3 sets of twins, all natural!  I have an oldest brother, Kurt; then 2 years later came Kathy and Karen; (side note: my sister is Karen Newman, National Anthem Singer for the Red Wings) then 18 months later Christie and Carol (born on Christmas Day, get it?  Christmas Carol) arrived. Finally, 5 years later, my mom wanted one baby she could spoil… And OOPS!  My twin brother, Peter and I were born on New Years Day!  Talk about a crazy household, especially during the holidays with so many birthdays!  But… I loved and cherish each and every moment of my childhood!

Fast forward, I graduated from the University of Michigan with my Bachelors in Psychology and a minor in Child Development.  I have most of the work done on my Masters in Community Counseling at Oakland University.  I interrupted my studies to earn my Certification as a Sleep Consultant from the International Maternity Institute in California.  During my years of formal education, I had three children, my son Jordan (age 24), and my daughters, Kennedy (age 18) and Nicolette (age 13), which began the real, down and dirty, life education!  Being a mother is and always has been my priority.  I had Jordan when I was 23 because my desire to be a mom outweighed everything else in the world for me.  Motherhood, as we all know, hasn’t always been easy.  But even during the incredibly difficult times, I thank God everyday for the blessings of my children.

As a Maternity and Baby Sleep Consultant, my clients include moms-to-be who want to take the guessing game out of infant sleep before baby arrives and/or are having trouble sleeping themselves; all the way to families with children (birth to age 5) struggling with their child’s sleep.  After carefully gathering all of the information necessary, I construct a personalized sleep plan and support it’s implementation one-on-one.  My holistic approach does not involve Crying It Out! Based on the family dynamics, their current scenario, the baby’s developmental stage and temperament, parent’s tolerance for crying, among many other variables, I put together a training method and daily plan that gently and respectfully helps little ones learn to self-soothe and develop the all important, life-long, skill of independent sleep.  I truly believe that a well-rested family is a healthy and happy family! Check out my website for more details.

 I am honored to be a member of Detroit Mom’s Blog and the wonderful community of mothers gathered here! ~Patty

Feeling Meh About Breastfeeding Again

My family will welcome its fourth (human) member in about three months. Among the uncertainty of how we’ll handle two kids, the topic of breastfeeding is top of mind. I breastfed my son for fourteen months, supplementing with some formula around ten months, and I’ll breastfeed again if all goes well. I completely respect that some moms use formula, either by choice or because they were unable to breastfeed. I feel blessed that I was able to breastfeed my son, and while you never know what will happen, I’m assuming it will work out again. Here’s the thing: while there was plenty to like about breastfeeding, there was also plenty that was just kind of a pain in the butt. (Sidenote: I have zero medical training, am not a lactation consultant, blah blah blah, but I AM a real person who did this, and I don’t think it’s as glamorous as all the beautiful Pinterest “Breastfeeding Tips” images would like you to believe!)

{The Good}

First, the good stuff: we’ve heard it all before, sometimes in posts that are far more obnoxious than I care to be, but I’ll state the obvious. There are health benefits to both mom and baby, bonding that occurs when mom and baby are nursing, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than having to buy formula, and of course, if you are nursing, it really doesn’t require any preparation (aside from setting up a huge mound of pillows and boppies those first weeks at home). I lucked out and had a pretty good experience, really enjoyed the bonding aspect (though I know that bottle feeding moms AND dads also bond with their kids while feeding!), and definitely saved a lot of money. I’m keeping this part short, only because information about benefits about breastfeeding are easy to come by. It’s the next part that’s tougher to find…

 erin breastfeeding tumblr

“Breastfeeding is always beautiful and intuitively easy. Plus, everyone gets a fun crown.”

{The Bad}

The bad stuff: ohhh, the emotion of it all those first few weeks. The stress of being responsible for your child’s growth without knowing exactly how much he is eating, at a time when you’re already working through some crazy hormones, can be really overwhelming. Every well intentioned visitor asks you at the first cry “Do you think he’s hungry?” or “Are you sure he’s not hungry?” or some degree of that question as if you weren’t thinking about feeding this baby almost every waking second. Some people who are bolder, and less subtle pretty much convince you that because they can’t see exactly how much baby is consuming, he must be starving. Top that off with the fact that you’re likely to experience at least SOME level of discomfort for the first few weeks (I will forever be grateful to the one lactation consultant who told me that anyone who said it shouldn’t hurt at all at first was nuts), and I’m not surprised that some women decide not to continue after the first week or two.

Once you get over that hump and start to feel a bit more confident, it’s awesome, but there are still plenty of challenges. Some babies don’t easily take to a bottle, and my son was one of them. I felt totally trapped, as I couldn’t leave my son for more than a couple of hours for MONTHS until we finally made progress with a bottle. Then when I went back to work, I had to figure out the whole pumping/working balance, which was TOUGH. Many women can’t work while pumping, so they actually have to stay at work longer and away from their families longer in order to pump – I can see how that doesn’t always make sense for them.

{This Time Around}

That said, I know I’ll do it again, and even though I can admit there are plenty of societal pressures to breastfeed, it’s a decision that I’d make regardless of what anyone expects of me. I think breastfeeding is like a lot of parental experiences: you take the good with the bad and just hope you’re doing the right thing. This time around I’ll probably be a little less nervous the first few weeks, and I’ll have the perspective to know that 40 minute nursing sessions and the pain don’t last forever. But I’m planning to also go in and be easier on myself this time. There is nothing like the paranoia and pressure of being a first time mom to ruin moments that should otherwise be special, and I am hoping to ease up on myself more this time. That means:

  • No guilt if baby needs formula, especially in the beginning.

  • Encouraging baby to take a bottle early, and consistently. (I have tons of friends whose kids also struggled with bottles, yet I don’t know a single baby who stopped nursing after a bottle! I’m sure it’s happened, but not to a single person I know. However, I know several moms who have felt totally trapped because they were not able to leave their house for more than an hour or two while their child was nursing.)

  • No set timelines on how long I will exclusively breastfeed. I’d love it if it works out that I nurse this baby as long as I did her brother. If not – no guilt.

  • Trying to get more comfortable nursing in public. I admire women who do, but by the time I got comfortable nursing without a million pillows around me, my son started getting really distracted. Let’s just say there was nothing “modest” about nursing a baby who was distracted by the slightest sound! It’s worth trying a little harder this time, but only time will tell how it all works out.

You can read article after article about how wonderful, easy, and blissful breastfeeding is. I don’t think these articles do most of us any favors. I’d rather be up front and say: regardless of how you feed your child, you’ll probably encounter some kind of struggle or feeling that you’re doing something wrong from someone who made another choice. You do the best you can, and make the best choice based on the cards you’re dealt. If you decide to breastfeed but don’t love every minute of it, you’re not alone, and it’s okay. It’s okay to stop if you want (especially if you’re truly miserable…I really believe “if Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy,” and we all need to take care of our physical and mental health!). If you do decide to continue, it’s okay to be honest about the fact that not every second is pure bliss. I think the best gift we can give each other as moms is to be honest with each other about our struggles and assure one another that it’s okay to admit when things are hard.

Following Our Children’s Passions

10.29.14 BLOG graphic 2

When I gave birth to our first son, I was so excited – a BOY! (we opted for the surprise at birth route).  With the addition of our second son, our family is complete.  They are of an age where we can really start to chase their passions and expose them to more things.  The age where no diaper bag is needed, no racing the clock to protect nap time and bedtime can be a little more lax, it’s a fun age!  Mornings are greeted with a ready – set – go approach and that we do!

My sons love dirt.  They love things that move.  Things that grow.  Things that require an adventure.  We drive everywhere, like, across the country everywhere. We limit screen time dramatically to encourage physical exploration, but on road trips, that changes a little.  After all, Nebraska is a LONG boring state.  On one of our many trips west, we borrowed from the library a John Deere DVD and learned more than you could ever imagine about these iconic tractors and farm tools.  Did you know there is a theme song too?  As we traveled the high planes of our country, we could see many of the farm tools in the field we passed.

Toward the end of one of the disks (yes, there are many disks in the series…) a certain type of tractor was introduced as well as a farmer who own one of the 100 ever made.  A John Deere 8020 Diesel.  It is enormous.  Well, it turns out that this tractor and his farmer live in Michigan; and through the power of the internet and a private Facebook tractor group, I tracked him down and he welcomed us to his farm.  There are some amazing people in the world; my boys were so enamored with this experience.

We left a day early, and camped nearby to enjoy the cool fall weather and start to strengthen their camping skills.  We also went to explore the sand dunes on Lake Michigan.

These are the photos that tell our story.  The sun was bright.  The air was Michigan fall crisp.  There were cows mooing in the background and my boys asking a true farmer about how things work.  The smiles on both generations were amazing.

Bottom line – chase your child’s passions.  It will become your passion to find ways to celebrate their loves and interests.  Maybe your own interests will blend too – my photography helps to tell our story and capture these moments.  Our love for the outdoors naturally happens while we explore.  Maybe yours is scrapbooking – creating something special from your own adventures.  Maybe yours is cooking – creating a meal that celebrates the interests and time of the child.  Anything is possible.

Go ahead, chase that tractor – you will learn more than you could ever imagine.

Fall Family Fun :: Local Cider Mill Reviews

Fall Fun 2014

I hope you had an enjoyable Monday, it was a PERFECT fall day for most of us in Metro-Detroit.  The kids and I spent the afternoon romping around in the leaves.  I grabbed the camera and captured some fun memories of the kids exploring this beautiful season in our Michigan backyard!

It was the FIRST time this season I snapped some photos of the fall colors.  Where does time go?!

Days like these are rare.  I had to take advantage of this warm day in Michigan.  I found that actually taking the afternoon and letting go of all the things I needed to do today was well worth the fun we had together.  The sun shined, we watched the leaves float down from the sky, and the temp was warm enough for flip-flops!

I started thinking today of all the things we hadn’t done yet this fall and I started to panic over this a little…  With two growing children I have to remind myself –we can’t do it all–!  Life is busy, life is full.  The focus should be on creating memories and enjoying time as a family.   Not how many items can we check off the bucket list.

I hope you too are finding those little opportunities to stop and spend time together as a family creating memories.

What there is to love about the fall :: cider + donuts, pumpkins, scarecrows, autumn, fall, fun, caramel apples, hot soup, sweaters, boots, scarves, hot apple cider, football, tail gait, crunchy leaves, red, yellow, orange, brown, purple, hay rides, halloween, candy corn, pumpkin spice, chili, gloves, crisp air, tractors, cider mills, apple picking, corn…

 Our DMB Contributors have shared some insight on some of Metro-Detroit’s finest local cider mills!  They have included some details to help you find the perfect cider mill for you and your family to enjoy.

Parmenter’s

714 Baseline Rd, Northville, MI 48167

10-8pm daily in October

Erin Bio Pic

Review by Erin ::

What makes Parmenter’s unique?
Parmenters, the oldest continuously operating business in Northville, and offers delicious cider, donuts, and even wine. Their winery is on the same grounds as the main barn, and hosts events and bands throughout the year. Though Parmenter’s is smaller than most cider mills, and may not keep kids busy quite as long as those with more bells and whistles, I don’t think the cider can be beat. In fact, it has ruined almost all cider for me, and we make the trek there several times a season because I have yet to find a tastier cider!

Any U-Pick Items? No

Hayrides/Cornmazes/Extra Activities? Nothing major. There are some cute wooden trains and buildings for kids to play in, and a photo cut out, but it’s not too elaborate. The cider is the real star here!

Signature Item/Must Do Experience: The mill is situated on a river, and it’s the perfect spot to enjoy your cider and fresh donuts, while watching (or feeding!) the ducks that waddle up and down the stream.

Review by Erin ::

What makes Plymouth Orchard unique? Voted Best Cider in Michigan twice in the last four years, Plymouth Orchard is a great balance of awesome cider and family fun. Kids will appreciate the animal farm, tractors, and fun photo cut outs, and adults and kids both will love the hayrides and delicious items available in the shop.

Any U-Pick items?  Pumpkins

Hayrides/Cornmazes/Extras Activities?  The orchard offers wagon rides and the chance to see many different farm animals.

Signature Item/Must Do Experience: Bring your camera!  The Orchard is really cute, and has plenty of funny face photo sets, and of course you’ll want to capture the more spontaneous moments of fun you’re bound to have with the animals or on a wagon ride.

Review by Erin ::

What makes 3 Cedars Farm unique? 3 Cedars is situated on a huge area of land for hours of family fun. There’s something for just about everyone here. Toddlers through school age kids could spend the whole day in the Barn Yard Play Land which includes several different farm animals, a wooden train area, corn box (yes, it’s a thing!), and more. Everyone enjoys a good hayride out to the pumpkin patch, where you can pick your own pumpkins or get lost in the corn maze. You can even stay late and rent a bonfire for large groups who just can’t bear to leave!

Any U-Pick Items? Pumpkins

Hayrides/Cornmazes/Extra Activities: Hayrides, 7 acre corn maze, Bonfire reservations available, Barn Yard Play Land

Signature Items/Must Do Experience: The bonfire is a really cool option for larger groups (must pay for at least 30 people). $8.00 per person includes a hayride, a trip through the cornmaze and one bonfire site.

Farm & Cider Mill is as beautiful as it is family friendly! Located in Commerce Township, the Cider Mill offers a variety of activities during the Fall including: Pick Your Own Apples, Hay Rides, Donut Kitchen, Night Time Corn Maze, Goat Farm, Giant Jumping Pumpkin Bounce, Corn Bounce, Photo Opportunities and more! Daily Admission to The Play Area and Corn Maze, open weekends until Halloween, is $8.00 and free for children under 30 inches! There are loads of pumpkins in front of the barn and inside the mill you can enjoy fresh donuts and cider. The donuts at Longs are, by far, the best Cider Mill Donuts in all of Oakland County!  Kids can actually watch as the donuts are being rolled in cinnamon sugar! YUMMMM!

Longs Family Orchard, Farm & Cider Mill has a beautiful and spacious picnic area, ideal for birthday parties and family-get-togethers! For those of you who have children with fall birthdays, it is perfect for children to play, pick a pumpkin to paint and enjoy their birthday cake! …Talk about easy clean up! The giant rocking chair is the ultimate backdrop for photos of the birthday boy/girl with their buddies!

I strongly recommend making a trip to Longs Family Orchard a Fall Family Tradition!

Earlier this month my husband, son, and I packed up and took a quick trip north to Frankenmuth to stay at Zehnder’s Splash Village hotel and water park. We’d been to other water park hotels, but it was fun to see what Oliver liked now that he was a bit older than he was on past trips.

An important note before we get too far: Zehnder’s is currently VERY near the end of a major renovation that has not affected the existing pools at all. The area they have right now is mostly geared toward younger kids, though it does have two large water slides (that Nick described as “a little bit scary,” hah!). Within the month, they will be opening an entirely new area that is aimed at older kids and adults, and looks awesome! So keep in mind that there will be even more options down the road.

{Hotel}

The Zehnder’s hotel (separate, short ride down the street from the restaurant) itself was quite nice. We initially planned on the “Dragonfly” (the, ahem, CHEAP) room, but Nick was sold on an upgrade for a significantly larger room with a living area for $25 extra upon arrival. Our thought was that we could hang out in the living area without keeping Oliver up once he went to bed. Of course, the joke was on us – he took a million years to fall asleep and we konked out about 15 minutes later, but it was still nice to have a little extra room. We left paying just over $200, which included dinner at Zehnder’s restaurant, and breakfast in the hotel at the Elf Hollow Cafe, but rates seem to vary drastically dependent on season/day of week.

{Food}

This is the third water park hotel we’ve been to with Oliver (Splash Universe in Dundee, and Maui Sands in Sandusky were the others), and the food is definitely something that sets Zehnder’s apart. I might be the only one in the world who isn’t a huge fan of the chicken itself, but our meals came with about a dozen other sides ranging from squash to cranberry relish to a tasty stuffing, so there was plenty for everyone, and I’d have to imagine that even a picky eater would find something they’d like.

I was expecting a standard continental style setup for the breakfast included in our stay. We were pleasantly surprised that the Elf Hollow (in hotel) breakfast buffet was a lot more elaborate than I imagined – fresh squeezed orange juice, plenty of fruit, sausage and bacon, waffles, breads, and more.

The restaurant has a window out to the pool where you can order things like hot dogs, pizza, fries, etc – basically what you’d expect from a snack bar. They also have some drink options (this pregnant lady was dreaming about a nice cold beer). We tried to pack some healthy snacks and eat before we went down to swim, but I can’t resist the occasional onion ring so we managed to sneak out with only paying for one snack!

{Water Park}

I saved this section for last so you’ll know I’m not super whiny (well, not all the time), because even though I loved the water park overall, it was the only place where I really had any gripes. As I mentioned, the facility itself was really nice. It was very clean, and the staff was really attentive. The pools and hotel lobby both have a cute, woodland theme with huge flowers, mushrooms, and dragonflies. It definitely appeals to the “toddler sensibilities” without being too obnoxious, and Oliver was excited to be there the second we walked in the door.

I’ll get my two complaints out of the way, then move on to the nicer stuff. My first beef – the water was pretty chilly. YES, I KNOW, I should expect water to be cold…or should I (picture my head cocked to the side, with raised eyebrows)? With all of the awesome features and money on upgrades, heating the pool a bit more would go a long way in making this wimp happy. This is one area where the two other hotel waterparks (Maui Sands and Splash Universe) we’ve been to have Zehnder’s beat. FULL DISCLAIMER: A girlriend visited two weeks after me and said she didn’t notice the water being too bad. This either A) Confirms I’m a wimp or B) Confirms Zehnder’s adjusted the temperature. Option A is probably more likely.

My other complaint is also a wimpy one, but after talking to other moms, I know I’m not alone here. I hate those blasted “dumping buckets” that gush water all over the spray scape. Call me a party pooper, but I just don’t get the appeal for kids OR adults, and I think it makes a lot of the spray scape structure less accessible for toddlers (maybe that’s intentional?). This feature is a staple of all water parks now, so they’re not going anywhere, and I think most kids like this, but I hated that the bucket at Splash Village also gushed some water into part of the toddler area.

Naturally, I assumed Oliver would be drawn to the toddler pool, but I was totally wrong. I think this is largely because on each side of the pool he was trying to avoid getting blasted with either some small buckets of water that dumped over one side of the pool, or the huge gush of water that came from )what I called) the Bucket of Doom, that sprayed over the other side of the toddler pool.

Instead, he really loved the basketball area, which was a total surprise to me! He had a blast throwing the ball, or just watching mom and dad try to make a shot. I think he would’ve spent the entire time there if we didn’t encourage him to try anything else. It took some convincing to get him over there, but he also really liked the sprayscape area once we figured out a “Safe Zone” that didn’t get soaked when the bucket dumped. He loved controlling the squirting features and even joined his dad down a nice sized slide once toward the very end of our visit. Previously, he’d really liked other lazy rivers (as do I – I like anything that encourages laziness!), but much to my dismay he wasn’t feeling it this time. I think there were just more fun options for him to explore than chilling in a tube.

I’m not sure how long this will last, but the water park was also almost totally dead. There was one hour where we had the entire pool to ourselves. I have to imagine this is a mix of going on a Wednesday in October, and many people holding out until the remodeling is done, but it was really nice!

I definitely think that, chilly gushing water bucket aside, this was the most “toddler friendly” water park hotel we’ve been to, but it will continue to appeal to kids as they get older. Kids up to about 10 years old will like the pool as it currently exists, and within the month, they’ll have many more options at Zehnder’s for older kids.

{Will We Be Back?}

I’m sure we will be back again down the road. If the water were just a bit warmer, it would be enough for me to say that we wouldn’t plan on going anywhere else, at least for a while. But, we’ll probably continue to explore a few other options like Great Wolf and Kalahari (especially in later years) that are also within driving distance to see what works best for us overall.

If you’re a bit less wimpy on the water temperature, you’ll really like Zehnder’s for younger kids, and soon be able to take advantage of all the new features if you have preteens or teens. I highly recommend the “Eat and Sleep” packages, for both the value and quality of food. I’ll be interested to hear if anyone else has thoughts on favorite places to stay and swim with their kiddos in the comments!
