How did you come up with the idea of your business, and how did you start?

“Doulas play an essential role in ensuring that pregnant individuals feel not only supported but also empowered throughout their entire journey. We firmly believe in providing evidence-based resources, because we know that knowledge is power. When someone has accurate and reliable information at their fingertips, they can make informed decisions that are right for them and their family.

“But it’s not just about facts and figures–emotional support is a big part of what we offer. Pregnancy and the postpartum period can be filled with a wide range of emotions, and having someone who genuinely understands and empathizes with you can make all the difference. Our doulas are there to lend a listening ear, offer encouragement, and provide a comforting presence.

“And let’s not forget the physical support we provide. From guiding through relaxation techniques to assisting during labor and delivery, our doulas are right there by your side, helping you navigate each step of the way. It’s about creating an environment where you feel safe, supported, and capable.

“So, knowing that doulas are absolutely necessary and incredibly beneficial for pregnant people. It was important to ensure that everyone has the resources, emotional backing, and physical assistance they need to make this journey as smooth, empowered, and memorable as possible.”

“I didn’t actually start the business from scratch. The chance to buy Live Light Birth and Family came up after I had been working with them for about two years. When I saw that opportunity, it just felt like the right move for me. I was really excited about the idea of carrying on the amazing service we’ve been providing to the metro Detroit community and being there for new parents in every way possible. It just felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I didn’t want to let it slip through my fingers. So, here I am, diving into this adventure and giving it my all!”

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

“Looking back, if I had the chance, I’d definitely tell myself to dive right in with both feet much sooner! Sometimes, the best way to learn and grow is to jump into the deep end of things and embrace every challenge and opportunity that comes your way.”

What is the best business advice you’ve ever been given?

“No matter what you’re trying to do make sure you’re having fun while doing it. Time is going to pass regardless and you don’t want to look back and see that you worried it all away.”

Have you faced adversity in business due to being a woman? How did you navigate that?

“Absolutely, especially when it comes to striking that work-life balance and mom guilt. The switch from private doula to being in charge of my own agency while also taking care of my three-year-old daughter and family has been quite a ride. It felt like I had to do it all and [I] felt guilty for not being able to.

“So, I’ve been working on setting clear boundaries with clients, even though it’s not always easy when this work can be so emotional and clients are in such a vulnerable place. Finding that sweet spot between work and personal life has been a bit of a learning curve.

“Juggling time for friends outside of work has been quite the challenge, but I’m grateful that the women at LLB&F are a group of moms who share a common goal of supporting fellow parents–and that begins with supporting one another. I’m all about finding ways to smoothly mesh our work stuff with the everyday demands of being a mom.

“Through all of this, I’ve learned that taking care of myself is absolutely vital. Seeking advice from mentors and leaning on my network has been a game-changer. It’s an ongoing journey, no doubt, but I’m committed to finding that sweet spot between my business and personal life and making sure I’m taking care of myself along the way.”

How do you persevere in challenging times?

“I dig deep and remind myself of what I’m working towards. I stay focused on my goals and look for the bright spots. Having my support system–family and friends–really helps too.”

What impact do you want your business to have?

“It’s all about changing lives, one family at a time. When birthing folks feel strong and partners are confident, it sets the stage for awesome parenting. We’re here to help parents thrive without the burden of birth-related trauma. My goal is to uplift, boost confidence, provide reassurance, and hold a supportive space for families during the postpartum period as well.”

What are the pros and cons of being a woman business owner in 2023?

“I consider myself fortunate to work in a field dedicated to birthing individuals, people with uteruses, and women. Making a positive impact on parents’ lives and empowering them to make confident decisions, advocate for themselves, and establish boundaries is truly rewarding. It’s both a privilege and a responsibility to support the LGBTQIA+ community and advocate for reproductive rights, especially in a time when we’re surrounded by so much divisiveness. By embracing inclusivity and remaining conscious of my biases, I’m grateful for the opportunity to drive positive change within our community.”

What knowledge would you share with someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?

“It’s not your responsibility to convince others of your success. Channel your energy into consistently delivering excellent results, and showing your skills.”

What do you do for personal and professional development?

“I’m part of the Coterie Detroit Entrepreneurial Group, and it’s been a game-changer. It’s connected me with a bunch of local business owners, giving me this sense of community that’s pretty awesome. They bring in some incredible speakers each month, covering everything from having a growth mindset to looking after your mental health and avoiding burnout.

“I’m a total podcast junkie! Especially when it comes to birth stuff–I’m a birth nerd through and through. I dive into everything from medical interventions to leveling up as a doula. There’s this one podcast that’s all about running a doula agency, which I absolutely adore. It’s like my little hub of knowledge and inspiration.”

What mantra or quote do you live by?

“The answer will always be no if you don’t ask.”

What’s your favorite place in Detroit or Michigan?

“I’m a big fan of camping and soaking up nature; if I could I’d go camping every weekend. Bois Blanc Island is this incredible spot. My family and I spent time there last summer and it instantly stole my heart. It’s full of untouched nature. You can slow and just relax.”

To start, we asked Kimberly to share some fun facts about herself with us!

  • When she graduated from college, she wanted to be in the fashion industry.
  • She ended up in the trucking industry for over 20 years. Now, she is doing what she always wanted to do!
  • She has two grown daughters and one grandson name Maxwell.

We asked Kimberly to share a little bit more about her business with us. Get to know her and her business, Smarty Pants Co., below!

How did you come up with the idea of your business, and how did you start?

“My first grandson was born 2019 and the selection for boys clothes was less than half of the girls selection, and the clothing had all these graphics and logos on them. I thought I [could] provide something better.

“I met with my two daughters and told them my idea. They thought it was a good idea and [were] willing to work with me on this adventure.”

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

“I thought I put fashionable boys clothing online and [that] people would come in droves. I was totally wrong and no one knew I was out there–and if they did, they did not quite trust me to give me their hard earned money. So I had to show them that we were creditable.”

What is the best business advice you’ve ever been given?

“Marketing, marketing, and marketing again.”

Have you faced adversity in business due to being a woman? How did you navigate that?

“No, I have worked in a male-dominated business for over 20 years and it was nice to meet women who also had [an] e-commerce business to share information with.”

How do you persevere in challenging times?

“Sometimes I have sit back and regroup. I try to keep my eyes on my goals to push me forward.”

What impact do you want your business to have?

“I know that selling children’s clothing is not like finding a cure for cancer but, I want anyone who buys [our] products [to] know that they [are] getting quality and fashionable clothing that is not only comfortable for their children, but lets them feel great about their child’s appearance.”

What are the pros and cons of being a woman business owner in 2023?

“All I see are pros. I am able to be myself and [be] creative. I worked in [a] male-dominated field for over 20 years, and this feels freeing.”

What knowledge would you share with someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?

“Start with market research. I did not do a deep dive into market research and that hindered me.”

What do you do for personal and professional development?

“I signed up for coaching which always helps. I like to do a million different things and my coach keeps me grounded and not running around like a chicken with my head cut off.”

What mantra or quote do you live by?

“Fall seven times, get up eight.”

What’s your favorite place in Detroit or Michigan?

“Belle Isle!”

How to Get Started with Adoption

So, you’re interested in adoption? That’s great! There are tons of kiddos in our city and our world who need safe and loving homes. The world of adoption can be really scary and tricky to navigate if you’re new to it. Somehow, there are almost no resources and an infinite amount of information to sort through.

Allow me, a momma-to-be via adoption (at the time of writing this), to share a little more about the different types of adoption. I’ll also share how to get started, and offer some suggestions for your next step in your journey.

From one momma-to-be to another, I’m glad you’re here and reading this.

Different Types of Adoption

The first thing you need to decide on is which type is right for your family. There are three primary types, each with their own unique considerations: domestic infant adoption, foster-adopt, and international adoption.

Domestic Infant Adoption

Domestic infant adoption is just what it sounds like! This is for those who are looking to adopt a newborn baby, though this type of adoption can have babies of ages up to 12 months. Those looking to pursue this path will need to consider their desired level of involvement; specifically, if the prospective parents want to get an agency involved or work with an attorney directly for the legal process.

Attorneys typically are cheaper than agencies, but they do require more effort from the adoptive parents from a “marketing” and overall involvement standpoint. Agencies are helpful in the sense that they “market” you to expectant parents and typically help you through the complexities of the legal system, but they are more expensive.

Wait times can vary greatly based on the preferences of the adoptive parents-to-be and the time it takes for a match with an expectant parent.

Foster-Adopt

According to the US Child Welfare website, there are over 391,000 children in the United States in foster care right now. Though some reunite with their birth parents, the need for many of them to have permanent families is great. Foster-adopt is another path for families considering adoption, especially those looking for an older child.

Typically, children in the foster care system are school-aged and have experienced some sort of trauma that has led them to their current situation. Ensure you’ll be as prepared as possible to support your future children by reading up on trauma-informed parenting before you get started. My personal favorite to date is The Connected Child.

This route is the least expensive of the three options.

International Adoption

International adoption is still a viable path to bringing a new child into your home, though it has become increasingly challenging and more expensive in the past few years. The best place to start if you’re considering this is to look into the country you’d want to adopt from. Many countries restrict adoptive parents’ country of origin, amount of time married, age, and sexual orientation, so it is important to look at these things before moving ahead. The Department of State’s website is a great place to start your research.

Funding the Adoption

The biggest thing I hear from friends and families around me is, “Oh, I could never afford that.” To put it plainly: yes, it is expensive. It ranges between $3,000 and $60,000, depending on the type of adoption and the circumstances around it.

I’m here to tell you that while it is expensive, I’m a big believer in your ability to afford it if you really want to! There are tons and tons of resources out there, particularly tax credits and grants that can help you, especially economically-disadvantaged households. In fact, many employers will even help you fund your adoption! Check with your HR professional or employee handbook on this one. Please, friend, don’t let finances be the reason you don’t even look into adoption.

Taking the Next Step

If any of this tugged on your heart strings, listen to your heart! I’m not saying to commit or take the plunge into the deep end. But, I’m suggesting you stick your toe into the pool of adoption. Take the next step, whatever that might be. Stuck on what that might be? Here are some suggestions:

  • Consider the types of adoption you’d like to pursue first.
  • Talk to friends and family, especially those with adoption experience, about their knowledge. Adoptee experience is especially important if you can find it!
  • If you’re pursuing domestic infant adoption, contact a local agency or adoption attorney to get you started.
  • If you’re pursuing foster-adopt, contact a Michigan Foster Care Navigator to help you understand the process and your role as an adoptive parent.
  • If you’re pursuing international adoption, pick a country and dive deep into their requirements to adopt using the Department of State website.

Whatever your next step, I am proud of you for taking action! The adoptive journey can be a lonely one, so know that I am here to chat with you about your experiences as someone going through it, too.

Your Guide to Pregnancy, Prenatal, + Postnatal Chiropractic Care

Detroit Mom partnered with the amazing people at Essential Family Chiropractic to bring you this post. All opinions are our own.

Detroit Mamas, this one is all for you! Oftentimes in the transition to motherhood, all attention turns towards your baby. In our office here at Essential Family Chiropractic, we love taking care of your kiddos. But our attention is also on you–before, during, and after pregnancy. You are your baby’s environment from conception to birth (and beyond!), so thriving in your health helps baby thrive in their health, too.

The first big event (read: stress) of life for your baby is birth. Ensuring you have a well-functioning nervous system and a perfect cascade of events during the birthing process allows baby to have the best welcome into the world possible!

So, let’s dive deeper into all things pregnancy, and how chiropractic care can help your growing family.

Pre-Conception + Chiropractic Care

We love sharing with couples who are ready to start a family that a healthy nervous system is a major key in the months or years leading to conception. We know so many women in the midst of trying to conceive and experiencing struggles, delays, or even loss. If that is part of your story, our hearts and prayers are with you. But even more importantly: we are here to offer our hands through chiropractic care!

We have heard quite a few testimonies, stating, “My chiropractor got me pregnant!”, which can evoke a variety of reactions from family and friends. All joking aside, a woman may begin chiropractic care to help with chronic low back pain, and then end up conceiving. Some of these women may have been previously labeled as “infertile.” Or, possibly just assumed because of other diagnoses (i.e. PCOS) that pregnancy was not an option. If you are like most people, you may be wondering, “How does chiropractic care help with fertility?”

Your body’s master control center–the nervous system–coordinates ALL functions in the body. The same nerves that allow you to feel pain in your lower back area, also branch out in similar areas of the spine. They control muscles, organs, and glands in your lower back. This includes glands that produce hormones relating to proper menstruation and pregnancy, and reproductive organs.

If the cause of low back pain is subluxation (a spinal bone out of alignment putting pressure on the nervous system), the nerves that go into the ovaries and uterus can also have that same pressure. That nerve pressure causes miscommunication in messages between our brain and our female organs. With long-term miscommunication, irregular or painful menstrual cycles may occur. Even without these obvious symptoms, hormone imbalance may result from subluxation, causing fertility issues.

We recognize that there are other causes of infertility that need input from a variety of healthcare specialties. But if we ensure that our nerves have proper communication first, all those other efforts to conceive have a greater likelihood of being effective. In this section we focused on female anatomy, but male reproductive organs need proper nerve flow, too. At Essential Family Chiropractic, we love taking care of couples before they are even thinking about starting a family!

Pregnancy + Chiropractic Care

Any mamas out there who wish they had more aches and pains during pregnancy, more nausea, less quality sleep, and longer labor times? …We didn’t think so. Research shows that women under chiropractic care experience fewer aches and pains throughout pregnancy. They also experience shorter delivery times compared to women not under chiropractic care!

This is directly related to the health of their nervous systems. With improved body awareness, our brain can activate muscles appropriately to carry better posture. It can also allow more comfortable stretching of our uterus, ligaments, and tissues. The all-important Relaxin hormone peaks at 12-14 weeks gestation, not at the end of pregnancy like we may assume. This hormone is responsible for allowing your uterus to stretch as baby grows. It also allows the pelvis to open appropriately during labor and delivery as baby descends into the birthing canal. Therefore, it is never too early to be adjusted during pregnancy.

Our doctors here at Essential Family Chiropractic have extensive, additional training for pregnancy care beyond the typical chiropractor. One of the many techniques we incorporate in our office is called the Webster Technique. It is an analysis of the pelvis to ensure best alignment and proper function of this area that plays such a big role in pregnancy and birth! It was created by Dr. Larry Webster and continues to be taught by the forefront pediatric and prenatal association, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), years later.

The analysis first looks at the sacrum, the bone between the pelvic bones, which houses nerves that branch out into the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic floor. Adjustments ensure proper movement of this bone in the pelvis as well as proper nerve communication to these organs. This analysis often also leads us to find misalignment of the pubic bone, soft tissue release of the round ligament, and more.

This all-important anatomy commonly causes moms discomfort during pregnancy and labor if the underlying subluxation is not addressed. With chiropractic care, you can be confident your nervous system is functioning at 100%. Therefore, your body as a whole can function and feel its best!

One Mom’s Pregnancy Story with Essential Family Chiropractic

It is common to hear about the dreaded “lightning crotch” during pregnancy. Thankfully, chiropractic care is shown to help decrease pubic bone pain and underlying pelvic floor issues!

We recently had a mom start care in her second trimester. She unfortunately experienced this “shocking” pain late in the third trimester as her body prepared for birth. Through consistent chiropractic care and some light restrictions on her body movement, she was able to enjoy the last few weeks of pregnancy with her husband and toddler, instead of being unable to move due to pain. She went on to have her ideal birth, a beautiful home birth experience.

Postpartum + Chiropractic Care

Many changes still occur in a woman’s body after birth. The amount of change during pregnancy is easy to recognize but postpartum, your body is relearning skills again! Our core relearns to function without a baby within it. Our uterus shrinks back to pre-pregnancy size. And, our nervous system learns how to take care of another person in ways it has not before. The mamas in our office at Essential Family Chiropractic cannot imagine going through this relearning without neurologically-based chiropractic care!

This season of postpartum is where we often see attention shift to baby, with little focus on mom. After six weeks and an “okay” from their OBGYN or Midwife, many women feel as though they can start their pre-pregnancy activities again, often not giving their body the time to heal from the miracle of birth! We would love to see moms take these six weeks to focus on nourishing their baby, as well as their own bodies.

Relaxin hormone continues flowing through our bodies for months after birth. During these months, this is a necessary time to stay well-aligned to support the structure of your spine as this hormone starts to decrease. Let’s think about it this way: it took you 40 weeks (plus or minus a couple) to grow a human. So why are we rushing moms to be back to pre-pregnancy abilities in only six weeks?

Proper neurological control of the entire body often allows moms to also experience improvements in clogged ducts, mid-back pain, and pelvic floor dysfunctions. Care for mom and baby often leads to great change in their infant’s poor or painful latch, indigestion, and more!

If you are not local to us, https://icpa4kids.com/find-a-pediatric-chiropractor/ is a great way to search for pediatric-trained chiropractors close to you.

We would be honored to see you throughout this exciting time of life in our office in downtown Farmington, Michigan! When you call or message to schedule, let us know you heard about us through Detroit Mom. We have a special offer for your first visit to our office!

Detroit Mom’s Local Love Spotlight: Erin Saba

Detroit Mom’s Local Love series highlights local women and the businesses they have built. We love supporting small business! Today’s Local Love Spotlight belongs to Erin Saba, Co-Owner of Ohana Fitness and Wellness, The Chaos Collection LLC, and creator of the How Mama Got Her Groove Back Postnatal Program.

We started by asking Erin to share a few fun facts about herself with us!

  • She has had three different birthing experiences–an emergency C-section with her first, a drug-free vaginal birth with her second, and a planned C-section with her third.
  • She loves food and will find any recipe and find ways to “health-o-fy” it.
  • She is obsessed with putting playlists together and music with a good beat–any genre, but she prefers rap. She thinks that in another life she was a DJ!

How did you come up with the idea of your business, and how did you start?

I had three different birthing experiences which led me into three different recoveries. Being someone who has always been in the fitness industry, I realized what I was doing pre-baby just wasn’t working anymore and there needed to be a resource for moms that not only cared for them by showing them the way with safe fitness routines and healthy easy meals to throw together, but also putting an emphasis on mental health as well. I pieced together what worked for me as well as SO many personal lessons within this program to help moms lose the stress, overwhelm, and pressure of not knowing where to start in their postpartum journeys to truly feeling heard, seen, and taken care of, giving strategies and tools to make their lives easier so they can focus on being present and enjoying the journey of new-ish motherhood.

“It’s a whirlwind in the beginning and time moves fast. The last thing they should be worrying about is googling “how to lose weight after babies.” There’s a lot of contradicting advice out there and things that are unrealistic for new moms. This program is different, empowering moms with a plan of action and lessons to help get them through some of the hardest periods of motherhood.

“I’ve been Co-Owner of Ohana Fitness and Wellness for over eight years now. As I’ve grown through seasons of life, it’s encouraged me to create tools and resources to help women through similar stages of life. With proper education and a whole lot of life experience, this idea was born. I have always been passionate about health and fitness and a huge advocate for self-care so this only made sense to create a program specific to the season of life that I have been in. Getting non-stop questions from women about what diet did I follow, what does my workout routine look like, how do you find the time to workout with babies? etc… All those gave me the outline of How Mama Got Her Groove Back Postnatal Program.”

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

“To not worry about competition or other people doing similar things. The reason your business will be successful is wholeheartedly because of YOU as an individual and that’s [something] no one else can copy or create. They can certainly try, but there’s only one you.”

What is the best business advice you’ve ever been given?

“Stay in your lane and focus on your mission, not all the shiny objects that come about that are only sent as distractions.”

Have you faced adversity in business due to being a woman? How did you navigate that?

“OH yes… When Sam and I (my business partner) had our first negotiation meeting for a rental property we were trying to expand into, we were not taken seriously, because of our ages and being women. We were asked if it were our first time with negotiating because “he could tell.”

“We didn’t end up doing business any longer with that person and it’s been a blessing in disguise for sure. Little did he know we had done our research diligently, called on many mentors, knew exactly what we wanted, and asked for it. Unfortunately he tried taking advantage of us and we weren’t standing for it. We are smarter than that. HA.”

How do you persevere in challenging times?

“I am extremely resourceful and have no issue with hard work. There may be tears shed but that won’t deter me from accomplishing things I set out to do. Life happens, entrepreneurship is no straight line. There’s ups and downs in all things, but that’s the beauty in it all, isn’t it? You get to decide how to respond. I’m a glass half-full kind of girl.”

What impact do you want your business to have?

“I really want this program and message to get into a mom’s hands who needs it the most. It’s never about the money–which of course money is nice. MISSION and purpose last longer than money ever will. My life goal and business goal has always been if I can change at least one person’s life for the better, that’s more than enough for me.”

Photo by Jamie Vandewinkle, Her Brand Photography

What are the pros and cons of being a woman business owner in 2023?

“Pros: you can literally do anything if you’re willing to work for it. We live in a world where you can research how to start a business, how to create a business plan, how to learn how to do XYZ. There’s really no limit to what you can do.

“CON: Seeing other women on social media and seeing others that may be further than you in your career, and then comparing why you’re not there yet.”

What knowledge would you share with someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?

“Be in it for the long haul. Have passion and purpose behind what you’re doing and don’t ever let anyone get in your way or tell you that you can’t do something.”

What do you do for personal and professional development?

“Podcasts: Jasmine Star, Earn Your Happy. LOVE a good book, too. One of my favorites was recommended by my former coach–Don’t believe everything your mind tells you.”

What mantra or quote do you live by?

“I am grateful for all the blessings in my life. For each season has only made me realize that I once wished for the life that I’m living now. What a gift it is to be alive.”

What’s your favorite place in Detroit or Michigan?

“I got two. Ohana Fitness and Wellness: my happy place and the happy place of so many other women. And then my home: I am a homebody if I’m not working.”

Detroit Mom’s Local Love Spotlight: Serenity At Home

Detroit Mom’s Local Love series highlights local women and the businesses they have built. We love supporting small business! Today’s Local Love Spotlight belongs to Juliana Meidl, owner of Serenity At Home.

To start, we asked Juliana to share a few fun facts about herself with us so we could get to know her a little better!

  • She is a serious Michigan State sports fan, and she works her schedule around watching MSU football and basketball.
  • She grew up on the eastside of Detroit and was the first person in her family to go to college.
  • One of her kids is on the autism spectrum, so she understands the challenges that come with having a child with special needs.

How did you come up with the idea of your business, and how did you start?

“I initially started this business with a partner. We both loved to organize and were very good at it. We helped friends and family members on the side and along the way people would mention that we should actually do this professionally. At first we didn’t realize that home organizing truly was a business. After doing some research we realized that not only was home organizing a growing industry, but one that was a perfect match for our skills and desire to help people.

“While we did the research to determine that yes, home organizing was a business that would be a great fit for us, it did take us a few years to take the plunge and make it happen. While we could see the opportunity of this business, we also saw many reasons not to do it. It is a risk to give up a job you have with steady income to start something brand new.

“We did finally get to a point in our lives where we wanted a new challenge professionally. We also had older school-age kids and wanted the flexibility that owning your own business can provide. It is a tremendous amount of work to start your own business, but we were ready and excited about the possibilities.”

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

“I wish we would have started this business sooner. We had talked about and dreamed together what owning our own business could look like. We let the risks of starting a business outweigh the potential rewards for several years before we finally did it. You can find many reasons to not do something, and I just wish we [hadn’t] let our fears dictate our decision.”

What is the best business advice you’ve ever been given?

“Don’t let the fear of the unknown hold you back. Believe in yourself and don’t give up.”

Have you faced adversity in business due to being a woman? How did you navigate that?

“Being a woman and owning a home organizing business is truly a benefit. The vast majority of my clients are women. I am able to truly understand the challenges and stress my clients feel. I know what it is like to be a mom and trying to juggle everything. I understand the stress that disorganization in a home can create. I also understand the benefits of having systems in place to stay organized.

“Being a woman allows me to really connect with my clients. Also, as someone who is older, I can understand and relate to my clients at the different seasons of life they [may] be in. I remember what it is like to have young kids. I know how busy life can be when your kids are all in school. I also know how challenging taking care of aging parents can be.”

How do you persevere in challenging times?

“Owning a business that requires you to go into your client’s home during COVID was a huge challenge. We did pivot to virtual organizing as much as we could during that time.

“We did find that once the lockdown was lifted, it actually was a benefit in some ways. Being home for so long–and for many, working from home–created new opportunities. Those areas in the home that people were able to ignore for so long became spaces that needed to be addressed.

“Overall though, I think the key to persevering in challenging times is just believing in myself and the mission of my company. It also helps [that] I have an incredibly supportive husband and family that supports me. They truly are [my] biggest cheerleaders!”

What impact do you want your business to have?

“This business gives me the opportunity every day to truly impact someone’s life. So many of our clients are so overwhelmed and stressed by their homes. When we work with our clients they don’t just get an organized space–they can get a life-changing experience. We provide a compassionate, confidential, and judgement-free service to each and every client. We believe that everyone deserves an organized home that serves them and their families.”

What are the pros and cons of being a woman business owner in 2023?

“I believe the possibilities to grow my business each and every year are there for me. As a woman working with women every day, I understand their situations and know how to help. Each client and situation is different, and we are here to provide customized and sustainable solutions to meet their needs.”

What knowledge would you share with someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?

“Take the risk! Owning your business is an amazing opportunity. But, it is a tremendous amount of work. I think a key to starting a business is to make sure you do your homework. We spent a lot of time researching not only this type of business, but also the competition in the market. We had to decide what exactly we wanted to offer our clients and how we would differentiate ourselves from others doing the same thing.

“Another piece of advice I would share is: don’t over-complicate things, especially when starting out.”

What do you do for personal and professional development?

“I am an avid podcast listener and reader. I love to listen to podcasts while I exercise. Reading is my way to unwind at the end of the day. There are so many resources available to not only help me grow as a business owner, but also as a woman and a mom.”

What mantra or quote do you live by?

“Your life is a beautiful blank canvas. You have the choice of splashing it with the most gorgeous and spectacular colors, by doing what you love.” Hiral Nagda

What’s your favorite place in Detroit or Michigan?

“My family and I love spending Saturdays at Eastern Market and walking along the riverfront. There are also so many great new restaurants opening in the city we love to try.”

Introducing Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Nurse Midwives

Detroit Mom partnered with the amazing people at Trinity Health IHA Medical Group to bring you this post. All opinions are our own.

The midwife has been a fixture in childbirth since women began giving birth to children–a.k.a., since the beginning of time. Today, the role of the nurse midwife has evolved into an integral component of many women’s primary care teams. In addition to their traditional role during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, nurse midwives now provide essential gynecological services, too.

As Trinity Health IHA Medical Group continues to grow its midwifery program, more women have access to this alternative care across southeastern Michigan. Surprisingly to many, nurse midwives can offer comprehensive annual well-woman care to women who are not facing serious illnesses or conditions. This care spans from adolescence through the transformative years of menopause, exemplifying their commitment to women’s lifelong health.

Trinity Health IHA Medical Group proudly employs more than 30 certified nurse midwives across southeast Michigan in Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Livonia, and Bloomfield. These nurse midwives are not only registered nurses, but they also possess specialized training in the field of midwifery.

They have expertise in delivering babies in hospital settings, seamlessly blending modern medical techniques with time-honored practices. The nurse midwives are all certified through the American Midwifery Certification Board, affirming their dedication to upholding the highest standards of care and professionalism.

What services does IHA Midwives offer?

Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Nurse Midwives not only offer comprehensive prenatal and
childbirth services, but can also provide the entire spectrum of well-woman gynecological care. Women can receive service from our nurse midwives starting in adolescence all the way through the menopausal years.

Our nurse midwives have a sensitive and professional approach to evidence-based medicine in comprehensive women’s health care, from preconception counseling and obstetrical and gynecological services, to normal labor management and vaginal deliveries.

What makes midwives different from an OBGYN?

Nurse midwives are advanced practice nurses who specialize in women’s health. The nurse
midwives at Trinity Health IHA Medical Group are all registered nurses who have graduated
from a nurse midwifery education program and have passed a national certification exam.

Obstetricians complete medical school and a residency before becoming certified. They care for both low- and high-risk patients. What we love about Trinity Health IHA Medical Group is the teamwork that happens when we care for our patients. We partner with our physicians who understand the midwifery model of care and respect our role on the team. If something in our patient’s care falls outside of our scope of practice or something becomes high-risk, they step right in and assist us and our patients.

What are the benefits of choosing a midwife with Trinity Health IHA Medical Group?

Choosing a midwife as your obstetrical provider for pregnancy, labor, and delivery has many benefits including being associated with lower overall interventions during labor, lower C-section rates, lower episiotomy rates, higher VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean delivery) rates, and higher overall satisfaction with the birth experience.

Choosing a Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Nurse Midwife means that you will not only have access to excellent midwifery care, but you will also have access to very supportive obstetrician physician partners who value and understand the importance of midwifery and the role of a midwife in both the office and hospital settings. Our incredible Trinity Health IHA Medical Group office staff make it very easy for patients to interact with their midwives and to get questions and concerns addressed in a timely manner.

NICU Advice + Wisdom: 5 Things to Remember

NICU

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was a place I knew nothing about before our oldest daughter was born six weeks early. After she was born, I wasn’t sure where to go when I was looking for NICU advice and wisdom. It’s not like this was a chapter in What To Expect When You’re Expecting.

I read a lot on google, mainly related to our daughter’s specific situation and the health issues she was diagnosed with. I thought I’d feel better if I could read about someone else going through what I was going through; someone else who had an experience that I could relate to. But, the thing about a google search is that you don’t always find articles that you feel personally connected to. They were helpful, but they didn’t feel very authentic.

In recent years I’ve been pretty open about our NICU journey, and because of this, I’m often asked for NICU advice. While I am by no means an expert, I am a mama who’s been there before. I’m a person, writing a post for me, in the past. This is the NICU advice I needed five years ago. And today, I’d like to share it with you.

Here are five things to remember, as you’re looking for NICU advice:

Remember to take this journey one step at a time.

Or, maybe even a few hours at a time. Remember to take things slow. Upon admission to this corner of the hospital, you’re going to stress and worry about “milestones” and all the things your baby is “missing” but let me tell you, the work being done here is THE most important.

And this work takes time. While not all babies admitted to the NICU are born prematurely, all babies in the NICU have special circumstances they are being cared for under. And these circumstances are going to take time to make progress. As much as you want to, you can’t speed this process up. So give it time and give in to moving slowly, but surely.

Remember to give yourself space to feel sad or upset.

You are going to have bad days. I repeat: You. Are. Going. To. Have. Bad. Days. Your baby is going to take steps back after inching forward. Let yourself feel all of the emotions that come with these steps back.

Feeling like you want to cry? Then cry. Right there in the NICU. Because here’s the thing about NICU parents: we get it. We know. Maybe we don’t know the specifics, but my gosh, we KNOW what it’s like to move forward and then fall back. The steps forward make you glimpse the future, a future free from the NICU; the steps back can really knock you down. Sit with those feelings, mama. Let them out.

Remember to hit the record button sometimes.

I really encourage you to take some videos while you’re in the NICU. There will be so many magical moments to look back on, and you’ll be happy you have these moments to watch later on. We have videos of our first time holding our daughter, and even times of us just sitting with her. The videos are for us but they’re for her, too.

I want to be able to show her these videos when she is older. To be able to show her how strong she was, and how far she came. There’s something about video and the opportunity to experience things again and again that I’m drawn to. And I hope you feel drawn to doing taking videos too.

Remember the reason that YOUR baby is there.

Okay, this should probably be listed first, but these pieces of advice are in no particular order. It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of the NICU. You might have your own room, or you might be sharing a larger pod with many other babies. But try to only focus on your sweet little one.

As I mentioned above, not all babies in the NICU are preemies. You’ll see full-term babies there, too. It is easy to compare your baby to others and wonder why they are being discharged and your baby is not.

One helpful thing I did read about being in the NICU is to remember that every baby is there for their own reason, and it’s a reason that you don’t know. You don’t know when they were admitted, or if they were sick, or any of the details. And that’s okay. Remember that your baby is on their own timeline, and don’t worry about what skills the other babies are working on.

Remember how strong your baby is.

Those little NICU babies are fighters. I’ve witnessed it with my own eyes, and surely if you’re a NICU parent, you know what I’m talking about. You will spend so much time worrying about your baby and how they are doing and then all of a sudden, you’re talking with the medical team about the car seat test and being discharged. Wait, what?!

It’s incredibly difficult to have to sit next to your baby while they receive oxygen support, or have testing done, or need bloodwork. Your first instinct is to scoop them into your arms and protect them, but chances are you haven’t even held them yet and they’re already fighting to get better and you can only watch and hope and pray. But, they are so, so tough. Trust me. And, don’t worry–they know you’re there next to them. I promise.

Being in the NICU is such an emotional experience. And, it’s likely one that will impact you every single day. As hard as it is to see past the NICU, please know, from a mom who’s been there before, that you can do it. Your baby can do this. Your family will become so much stronger through this experience. And your little one will make you proud every single day.

5 Myths About Chiropractic with Essential Family Chiropractic

Detroit Mom partnered with the amazing people at Essential Family Chiropractic to bring you this post. All opinions are our own.

We’ve previously talked about what chiropractic care can look like for both you and your family. Now that you know what chiropractic care IS, this post will clarify what chiropractic care is NOT.

Continue reading to break through common chiropractic myths and become more confident in choosing chiropractic care as an addition to your healthy lifestyle!

Myth #1: You can adjust yourself.

“I don’t need a chiropractor, I pop my own back!” While that popping sound may allow a sensation of relief (due to the release of happy hormones, i.e. endorphins), this does not address the true, underlying cause of your issue and many times can cause negative effects. That is truly all it is: a short-term release of pressure.

The sound you hear is gas releasing from the joint space between two spinal bones. Let’s envision three bones in the back. The one in the middle is the “stuck” one–the bone that is not moving as it should (it is subluxated). Without a specific force given by a trained Doctor of Chiropractic into that one bone, the already “unstuck” bones above and below are the ones to move.

With excess movement, and continuous “self-popping,” those bones become hypermobile. This is why if someone starts to pop their own spine, they feel the need to chase that release more and more often. This repetitive, unspecific popping is actually dangerous, leading to ligament laxity and possibly damage to those tissues in the future.

Chiropractors don’t even adjust themselves, so neither should you! All three of us doctors at Essential Family Chiropractic are checked for subluxation (spinal bone misalignment causing brain-body miscommunication) a minimum of once per week.

Myth #2: Once you start at the chiropractor, you have to go for the rest of your life.

You might have a friend or family member who says on repeat, “I love chiropractic, I will definitely go for the rest of my life!” A lifetime commitment is a reasonable apprehension to have, especially when we limit chiropractic care to only aches and pains. At Essential Family Chiropractic, we look deeper and care for the entirety of the patient. Our chiropractic advocates know they not only feel better, but they function better, too, through consistent chiropractic care!

We understand the hesitation. But our question to you is this: do we achieve physical goals at the gym, and then stop moving our bodies? No! Our body craves movement, and it is necessary to maintain our physical goals. How about dentist appointments? You have no cavities at your regular check-up. Yay! So you stop brushing your teeth, right? Absolutely not. Dental care is vital to optimal health, but the bones that house your nervous system are arguably even more important. Unfortunately, our spinal health is easier to overlook, as we cannot visibly see our spine without an x-ray.

The fact is, your spine houses your nervous system–the system that controls and coordinates ALL communication from your brain to the rest of your body. Bodily functions begin to suffer when we have miscommunication. For some, bladder control weakens, leading to bedwetting or incontinence. Others experience poor sleep, weakness of muscles leading to fast fatigue, or constipation.

When we think about the deterioration of our teeth, those problems make themselves well-known early on, with small cavities, before larger issues of root decay set in. This is why dental check-ups are recommended every six months, for a deep cleaning. We prioritize preventative care by flossing and brushing multiple times per day. Why don’t we think about our spinal health in the same way?

Before there is a major issue–leading to spinal surgery–let’s take care of those daily stressors to help your body better adapt and grow stronger. This is why you have loved ones who go to a chiropractor regularly. They understand Benjamin Franklin’s words: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” If we don’t invest in maintenance now, we could suffer with the negative consequences in the future.

Myth #3: Chiropractors aren’t “real” doctors.

We appreciate the chance to share all it takes to become a Doctor of Chiropractic! A bachelor’s degree is needed before beginning chiropractic college in most states in the U.S. We then enter our doctorate program (another roughly four years). After, we work in an office setting, similar to a residency program.

In the beginning of chiropractic college, our course load is very similar to that of medical school–we both take classes in basic sciences, embryology, osteology, anatomy and physiology, clinical diagnosis, radiology, and toxicology. Then, our schooling becomes specialized towards our expertise in health care. Chiropractors focus on the body from a holistic viewpoint, including an in-depth education on chiropractic techniques and philosophy. Medical doctors focus on pharmacology, medication, and the various interactions in the body.

To be licensed as a Doctor of Chiropractic in the state of Michigan, we are required to pass all four parts of the National Board, which includes all the basic and clinical sciences, nutrition, orthopedic and radiological diagnostics, and adjusting techniques. Many states also require the Physical Therapy National Board.

Whew! We go through a lot of education so we can provide an adjustment to you and your family. Us doctors at Essential Family Chiropractic did not stop there with our education, though. We all have a heartbeat to care for kiddos and pregnant mamas. Therefore, we have additional training and certifications through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Our doctors also choose to attend multiple seminars each year to fine tune and even learn new adjusting skills. At Essential Family Chiropractic, we are life-long students!

Myth #4: “Chiropractic doesn’t work,” or, “I don’t believe in chiropractic.”

Chiropractic is not a religion; you don’t have to “believe” in it. Okay, all joking aside, this is something we hear often. The person saying it typically has a personal reason for not “believing.” We want to hear them out and ask clarifying questions. Most of the time, when chiropractic “doesn’t work,” that person was not given a clear plan for their care by their past chiropractor, or they were told to come back only when it hurts again. This can feel very frustrating when the pain is like a roller coaster, always coming back at the worst times (typically with heightened life stress–no surprise!).

To that, we can put this person at ease. After we gain all the clinical information about their current health, their health history, neurological scans, and x-rays when necessary, we can give very specific recommendations on how often we need to see them to allow for the best healing in their body. Sometimes the real issue is that they don’t want to commit to multiple visits. They want a “quick fix” for their issue that has been around for months or even years. While we have to assess in the office before we can assume any timeline of healing, with our expertise, we do know it takes more than one or two adjustments to see lasting change.

Have you ever gone to the gym once or twice and thought, “Wow, I don’t look any different than before I went the first time. I think I’m done.” To feel or see change in our physical bodies, it takes weeks or months of consistency. The same principle applies to chiropractic and life in general–all processes require time.

We invite you to give yourself some grace in this moment; healing takes TIME. Many people have spent years with a poorly moving spine and poorer communication between their brain and body. In the same way that it takes time to train your muscles to gain speed and strength, it takes time to train your nerves to regain proper communication!

Myth #5: Chiropractic care is unsafe.

In our office we adjust four generations of families; from hours old until their last moments on this earth, and everyone in between. Our adjusting styles and techniques allow us to adjust ANYONE’S spine safely and effectively. Newborn baby adjustments look different than a 23-year-old athlete’s adjustment, which looks a lot different than a 78-year-old with osteoporosis. We are aware that each body is different. Therefore, we take care of you based on your body.

We also set clear expectations for how you may feel after the adjustment. Often in the beginning of care, our patients will say how sore and achy they are, similar to a full body workout. Great! Your muscles are activating appropriately to hold your spinal bones back into proper alignment. Others who have had numbness in their limbs may start to experience “pins and needles” sensations, like when your foot starts to wake up after you’ve been sitting on it for too long. Your nerves are waking up and healing!

If we didn’t set those expectations up front, these uncomfortable symptoms would be worrisome. Our patients understand that these are healthy changes under our care. However, it is always best to check in with your chiropractor if you have any concerns after an adjustment.

An uncommon event, but something that tends to create a big headline, is “Chiropractic care causes stroke.” We can understand where this would cause hesitation for many, so let’s clear up the confusion! Many early symptoms of a stroke are also common reasons to consult a Doctor of Chiropractic. This is why we ask in-depth questions about your health history, perform neurological scans, and take x-rays before we ever place our hands on you for an adjustment. We are confirming that you are a candidate for chiropractic care. We are able to successfully co-manage with your medical doctor, when needed, as we understand there is a time and place for medical care.

In order for an adjustment to play a factor in a stroke, the practitioner would have to perform a non-specific manipulation that extends far beyond the normal ranges of motion in the neck. Simply put, our doctors at Essential Family Chiropractic NEVER do that adjustment, eliminating that risk completely. The likelihood that an individual has a stroke after a visit to their chiropractor is the same likelihood that an individual has a stroke after a visit to their PCP, per this meta-analysis research performed by Harvard and Johns Hopkins, which concludes: “There is no convincing evidence to support a causal link, and unfounded belief in causation may have dire consequences.”

As always, at Essential Family Chiropractic we are here to serve our community, and would love to help your family grow healthy and strong together!
