Introducing Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Nurse Midwives

Detroit Mom partnered with the amazing people at Trinity Health IHA Medical Group to bring you this post. All opinions are our own.

The midwife has been a fixture in childbirth since women began giving birth to children–a.k.a., since the beginning of time. Today, the role of the nurse midwife has evolved into an integral component of many women’s primary care teams. In addition to their traditional role during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, nurse midwives now provide essential gynecological services, too.

As Trinity Health IHA Medical Group continues to grow its midwifery program, more women have access to this alternative care across southeastern Michigan. Surprisingly to many, nurse midwives can offer comprehensive annual well-woman care to women who are not facing serious illnesses or conditions. This care spans from adolescence through the transformative years of menopause, exemplifying their commitment to women’s lifelong health.

Trinity Health IHA Medical Group proudly employs more than 30 certified nurse midwives across southeast Michigan in Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Livonia, and Bloomfield. These nurse midwives are not only registered nurses, but they also possess specialized training in the field of midwifery.

They have expertise in delivering babies in hospital settings, seamlessly blending modern medical techniques with time-honored practices. The nurse midwives are all certified through the American Midwifery Certification Board, affirming their dedication to upholding the highest standards of care and professionalism.

What services does IHA Midwives offer?

Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Nurse Midwives not only offer comprehensive prenatal and
childbirth services, but can also provide the entire spectrum of well-woman gynecological care. Women can receive service from our nurse midwives starting in adolescence all the way through the menopausal years.

Our nurse midwives have a sensitive and professional approach to evidence-based medicine in comprehensive women’s health care, from preconception counseling and obstetrical and gynecological services, to normal labor management and vaginal deliveries.

What makes midwives different from an OBGYN?

Nurse midwives are advanced practice nurses who specialize in women’s health. The nurse
midwives at Trinity Health IHA Medical Group are all registered nurses who have graduated
from a nurse midwifery education program and have passed a national certification exam.

Obstetricians complete medical school and a residency before becoming certified. They care for both low- and high-risk patients. What we love about Trinity Health IHA Medical Group is the teamwork that happens when we care for our patients. We partner with our physicians who understand the midwifery model of care and respect our role on the team. If something in our patient’s care falls outside of our scope of practice or something becomes high-risk, they step right in and assist us and our patients.

What are the benefits of choosing a midwife with Trinity Health IHA Medical Group?

Choosing a midwife as your obstetrical provider for pregnancy, labor, and delivery has many benefits including being associated with lower overall interventions during labor, lower C-section rates, lower episiotomy rates, higher VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean delivery) rates, and higher overall satisfaction with the birth experience.

Choosing a Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Nurse Midwife means that you will not only have access to excellent midwifery care, but you will also have access to very supportive obstetrician physician partners who value and understand the importance of midwifery and the role of a midwife in both the office and hospital settings.
