Detroit Mom’s Local Love Spotlight: RTS Sleep Consulting

Detroit Mom’s Local Love series highlights local women and the businesses they have built. We love supporting small business! Today’s Local Love Spotlight belongs to Rachel, owner of RTS Sleep Consulting.

To start, we asked Rachel to share some fun facts about herself with us. She told us that she wears a mouthguard at night because she clenches her teeth. You will most likely always see her with a Diet Coke. And, if she won the lottery, the most responsible thing would be to pay off her student loans, but she would probably buy a house on the beach in Florida!

We also asked Rachel to share a little bit more about her business with us. Get to know her and her business, RTS Sleep Consulting, below!

How did you come up with the idea of your business, and how did you start?

“I sleep trained both of my kids and they both started sleeping 7:00 p.m-7:00 a.m. before they turned three months old. My friends would always ask me questions about their kids’ sleep and I recently looked into if I could do this as a business–so I went and got certified! I started with getting my certification in sleep training to become a certified sleep consultant. Any tasks that seem intimidating to me and “daunting,” I tend to just put off or never follow through. I was so passionate and so excited about this opportunity that I took the bull by the horns and started RTS Sleep Consulting!”

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?

“I still am so new into this business venture–I started in February 2023! I hope once I get more clients, I will learn what is working and what isn’t working as far as tracking the child’s sleep schedule. Right now, I am just doing it all through text. Technology is also something that intimidates me!!”

What is the best business advice you’ve ever been given?

“To remind myself that if I really want this, it will not fail!”

Have you faced adversity in business due to being a woman? How did you navigate that?

“Not yet! I consider myself lucky . . . for now!”

How do you persevere in challenging times?

“I focus on my “why.” Remember why I started this business in the first place. What impact [do] I want to make in people’s lives? What motivated me to become a sleep consultant? Keeping my purpose in mind can help me stay motivated and focused during those hard times!”

What impact do you want your business to have?

“I want to help moms get the help that they need and deserve! I don’t want moms to feel ashamed for wanting help when it comes to their child’s sleep. Sometimes as moms, we need a little outside perspective to help get us through a rough patch. We all need sleep–moms, dads, kids, even pets! I don’t want someone to be denied of that just because they think that “it will eventually get better.””

What are the pros and cons of being a woman business owner in 2023?

“The pro would be that it is way more “normal” in 2023 for a woman to own her own business. The con is that there are still some people that just don’t want to take a woman business owner seriously–when they are just as qualified!”

What knowledge would you share with someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?

“Just do it! If you want to make it happen, you will do anything in your power to get it off of the ground! I am in pure shock still that I own an LLC! What are you waiting for?!”

What do you do for personal and professional development?

“I listen to a podcast geared towards sleep consultants and their businesses. It is always so interesting to see how fellow sleep consultants work. I also like to listen to motivational podcasts that are geared towards working moms and women who own their own businesses.”

What mantra or quote do you live by?

“I will have a good day, because it’s my choice.”

What’s your favorite place in Detroit or Michigan?

“Rochester Hills–I am probablyyyy being biased since I grew up here! :)”
