Summer Love for the Single Mama

The sun is shining. The grass in green. The skies are blue. Flowers are in bloom. Squirrels playfully chase each other between the trees. Birds sing their happy, chirpy songs. Couples float hand in hand, hearts dancing around their heads. Babies squeal with delight in their strollers. Love is undoubtedly in the air. You soak it all in as you walk around with an iced caramel macchiato in your freshly manicured hand.

Love is in the air!

You notice your bare ring finger. You are single. You are a mama. You are not dead. You realize you’re finally ready. You feel more alive than you have felt in months. Summer is here. Opportunities abound. You have been so focused on being the super mama (which is amazing!) that you’ve forgotten all about that hopeless romantic who lives inside of you. Follow these tips for finding love (or at least a date!) as a mama who happens to be single!

  1. Talk. Talk. Talk. You have at least three hundred Facebook friends. Connect! Ask everyone and anyone you know if they know someone who would love to date someone as awesome as you. Call your friends: everyone has a brother, cousin, friend or even an ex-boyfriend that they could potentially hook you up with! Hot guy at Starbucks? Say hello! Everyone is a possibility.
  2. Dating sites! There are zillions of busy singles out there looking for love. On most sites you can check off boxes for exactly what you’re looking for from height to education, lifestyle, etc. Bonus: you can peruse what’s out there in the comfort of your own home with a nice glass of wine . . . in your pajamas sans makeup. How awesome is that?
  3. Expand your horizons. Take a class, check out that hot, new Detroit restaurant, hike through Maybury State Park, stroll along the Riverwalk. Even better? Volunteer! Help someone else, help yourself. New places equal new faces . . . connect!
  4. Be happy with who you are and how you feel! Get a blowout, slip on a new dress and enjoy yourself. Nothing is more beautiful than a smile on your happy face. A happy woman equals a happy mama . . . plus, like attracts like! Look good and feel good, it’s contagious!
  5. Be honest about your intentions. Are you looking for love? Are you simply interested in conversation and a good meal? Do you want to expand your family? We are all grownups, save everyone a hassle and be up front about your wants and needs.
  6. Leave the details of your divorce at home. Maybe you have a wonderful relationship with your ex. Maybe the very thought of him makes your skin crawl. Keep the ex-talk to a minimum. How you speak of the father of your children is a direct reflection of who you are, be respectful of your circumstances. Red flag anyone who speaks terribly of his ex-wife. It is perfectly fine to provide factual information, but please save the drama!
  7. Keep your kids out of your dating life! Whether a toddler or teenager, your children do not need to get to know your new beau. Let’s be honest, they’ve already suffered through one major relationship failure. There is no need to expose your babes to the man of the moment. Protect the kiddos first! Until things become serious, keep dating separately from momming. Reserve your dates for nights the babes are visiting their dad or schedule a babysitter.
  8. Minimize the mom guilt! Regardless of marital status, mom guilt is huge! Being a single mama? It can sometimes feel all consuming. There is no reason to feel guilty for moving on with your life. You deserve to have romance and love and excitement.
  9. Remember that you are the hero of your story. You’re single, you’re not desperate. You certainly don’t need saving! Be strong and confident in the stunning woman that you are and let that confidence shine through.
  10. Have fun! Your path to single motherhood may have been a stormy one, but remember there is always the sunshine after the rain. Relax and just have fun, who knows where this beautiful life will take you? Love always wins!

What dating tips can have you found useful in navigating new love as a mom?

Navigating Life as a Military Wife

When I met my husband in 2008, I never imagined my life would have come to where we are now. I never imagined myself as a military spouse, nor was it anything I ever aspired to be.

My husband Shaun is a member of the United States Coast Guard and is now in his seventeenth year of service.  I haven’t been with him throughout his entire journey in the military, but he has been to New York twice, Alaska, South Carolina and Northwestern Michigan before coming back to Detroit (where we are both originally from) in 2014.

I joined Shaun when he was transferred to Charleston, South Carolina in July of 2009. While in South Carolina I found there was a huge military presence there.  There was base housing; encouraging a sense of community and togetherness among military members and spouses, a commissary and exchange for military members and spouses to grocery shop, and wherever you went you saw people in uniform. I thought it was great to see such a sense of camaraderie and support for each other.  It was like no matter what you’d always have friends and a family when you couldn’t be near your own.  It was nice to feel that if I ever needed that kind of support – it would be there for me – for my family.

In July of 2011, we were relocated to Ludington, Michigan – a mere 4 hours from Detroit!  It sounds like a lot, but compared to the 13-hour distance we had in Charleston, anything was better to us! Although I know we had our second “military family” we started to build, I felt safer in the fact that we would be closer to our firm Detroit roots, our forever home (one day).

There are so many wonderful things about being a military family.  Traveling to places I’d never otherwise get to see, meeting so many amazing people with huge hearts, learning how to deal with difficult life situations, and a very important one: learning to live with constant change without any control of the outcome i.e. uprooting your family entirely every 2-4 years.  I will admit that if it was just Shaun and me, uprooting wouldn’t be such an issue.  Once kids were added to the equation, Shaun and I felt just a little different about life with the military. We felt a very natural urge to start winding down our military journey “on the road” and bring our family home to Detroit to stay – forever.

Once we were settled in our home in Northern Michigan and started getting more frequent visits from our family and friends who live here, our minds began to wonder: How are we going to leave this place and move far away again?  It doesn’t quite seem comfortable – it doesn’t seem right. Of course, like a broken record, I heard constantly from family members, friends and other military spouses that “this is what I signed up for” and “you knew what you were getting into when you married him.” You know what?  I don’t believe that for one second. There’s no way to expect or understand the experience you are about to embark upon before you actually embark upon it! Now that we’re in the middle of it, especially after starting one of our kids in school, Shaun and I both feel the same way.  Maybe picking up and moving across the country for the next 10+ years just isn’t for us.

Our son is in one of the best school districts in the state.  He has had the most amazing start in his education. I do not want to pull him from this beautiful foundation we’ve built for him. Now I have to look for a preschool for our daughter and a school district in an area that I have never been to and is 3,000 miles away.  Online resources for this are great – but nothing compares to being there in person to see where your child will be learning.

Colin is just now starting to make friends and constantly talks about when he and his friends get into first grade and when he moves up in Boy Scouts and having play dates with his classmates this summer.  Guess what buddy?  We’ll be in California this summer – where you’ll know literally no one except us within a 3000-mile radius.  He’ll have to start from scratch in the friendship department.  My son would be amazing at this since he is probably the most friendly little boy I’ve ever known, but the thing is I don’t want him to have to keep doing this over and over.  I understand it’s possible to “make new friends, but keep the old.” I just don’t want to cause any unnecessary heartbreak.

Every time we move, we have to change/find new doctors, hairstylists, dentists, places to live, grocery stores, banks, etc., This is pretty much self-explanatory.  You have to find a new…everything.  Starting from scratch every 2-4 years is taxing, emotionally and financially.

For my family, we’ve decided that our next transfer to Alameda (San Francisco area) California will be our very last.  For us, it’s the most natural progression.  Shaun absolutely loves his job and has every reason to be proud of his military career – but we both agree that to everything there is a season, and we’re very excited (and nervous) to see what the next season will be like for our family.

So, we’re leaving on our cross-country journey in July for approximately three years.  Fear not, family and friends – we will be counting down the days until we return to you and never leave again.  Our roots, our home, our forever.

The Simple Truth {An Anatomy Lesson for my Toddler}

There’s no beating around the bush, there’s no fancy terms or lingo used in my family. We just call his a Penis and hers Vagina. It’s that simple. Don’t worry, there have been some very interesting conversations about the context of this in our household recently. “Sweetie, there’s a difference between calling it a penis when we are talking and yelling penis in the middle of the grocery store to get your brother to laugh.” She turned her head at me like a dog does when you won’t just give them a treat already. “Okay, momma.” She has already learned the talented eye roll.

My three-year-old is getting very curious about more things in life. She is asking question after question and every answer is following with the dreaded “why?” I want her to continue to question things and to continue to fill her wealth of knowledge. But there is one thing I never want her to be, confused. I never want her to grow up and a few years later learn the proper word for something or feel uncomfortable about using it.

Let me tell you a little, silly story about myself. When I was a little girl, my grandma used to only have orange juice with pulp in her house. I hated it. So, being the spoiled granddaughter I was, she would take a small strainer and strain the juice for me so I would drink it. At some point, I referred to the ‘pulp’ as ‘ditsies’ (yes, I am aware that this is a made-up word). My grandma thought this was extremely cute so every time I came over she would pull out her ditsy-filled orange juice and grab her ditsy strainer and strain the juice for me so I could drink my ditsy-free orange juice and be happy as a clam.

Fast forward to me in my early 20’s, grocery shopping with my fiancé (now husband), and I grab a carton of orange juice and looking confused say, “what’s pulp?” He looked at me like I had three heads.  You see until that very day, this private school, college-educated woman still thought orange juice was either purchased with or without ditsies. After a good laugh and a forever remembered story that we can’t seem to shake, I have now learned that the correct term for ditsies is pulp, and I still don’t like it.

While it was cute that I had a made-up word for something and it’s a great story to tell, I was fortunate enough that the embarrassing use of the wrong word happened the way it did. It could have easily happened in a boardroom full of executives at my law firm and well, let’s face it, that would have really sucked. (Okay, okay, I’m being dramatic, but you get the point.) Don’t get me wrong, my daughter still gets time to be a kid, and use her imagination, and make up stories. But, when she comes to me and asks me what something is called, I’m going to tell her. Thankfully, I have ALOT of time (hopefully) before the big ‘Birds and Bees’ conversation has to happen. But when it does, I plan on being truthful. Let’s face it, if I don’t tell her, she will just as soon ask Alexa or Google, and I’d rather be the one explaining it anyway!

Moms Night Out “Barre Crawl” Edition Recap

Last month, we hosted moms and moms-to-be at our second annual “Mom’s Night Out: Barre Crawl” at Lolë and The Barre Code Metro Detroit in Rochester Hills. Everyone in attendance walked away with swag bags filled to the brim {see more about what our readers took home below}, an appreciation for Lolë’s Spring Collection, and a sweaty barre class. But… what we enjoyed most was getting to interact with our readers and see the connections that were made from another DMB event!

The evening kicked off with shopping, snacks, conversation, and raffles. Lolë Rochester owner, Christina Gaskins, welcomed readers to the store and gave them a brief background on her business {she owns three stores in + around Detroit: Rochester, Royal Oak & Ann Arbor!} and what they could expect from Lolë products and the brand itself. Also in attendance was our event sponsor and co-owner of Live Well Chiropractic, Dr. Meaghan Cromer, to chat about the benefits of chiropractic care and provided chair massages which were enjoyed by many! If you’re in the market for an adjustment {psst! everyone can benefit from chiropractic care!}, Live Well has offices in Rochester and Royal Oak, making their footprint in Metro Detroit rather accessible.

After the Tropical Smoothie beverages had been sipped, the moms headed next door to The Barre Code for a 50-minute strength training class with their Birmingham Studio Manager & Instructor, Lynnette, who was 34 weeks pregnant at the event. During class, readers challenged both their mind and body through exercises focusing on their upper body, core {with modifications made for pregnant attendees}, thighs and “seat.” While some walked out saying it was one of the toughest workouts they had completed, they also mentioned feeling strong and empowered as they laced back up their shoes.

Before the evening commenced and the champagne cork had been popped, we were able to grab a group photo, courtesy of DMB Executive Team member Emma Burcusel Photography. Special thanks to Emma for capturing the event highlights.

Thanks to the local businesses below for their generous donations for our Mom’s Night Out raffles and congrats to the lucky ladies that left the event with their winnings:

And what’s a Mom’s Night Out without a swag bag? Every mom that attended walked away with some amazing gifts:

Thanks to everyone that joined us for our second annual “Moms Night Out Barre Crawl” event and special thank you to our sponsors, and contributors that made this event possible.

Sleep Training: Misunderstandings vs Things that Actually Help

Sleep when the baby sleeps.” That sounds easy enough, right? When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I remember being told this more often than not. I also remember hearing, “sleep now, you won’t get much with a newborn.” How contradicting! Such wonderful, ahem, shards of advice.

As a mother of two girls now, I can honestly say the biggest challenge I have dealt with, with both of my girls is sleep (or lack thereof). My first-born was a colicky baby. She’s a spirited kid, even now at the age of five. She keeps us on our toes and didn’t sleep through the night (on her own) until after the age of three. THREE! Three years of inadequate sleep makes you, well, nutso!

My oldest in our bed

When I became pregnant the second time around I was adamant about my sleep and the quality of it. I literally put my foot down and told my oldest she had to sleep in her own room. I couldn’t withstand the potential rib kick in the middle of the night with a growing baby inside of me.

I work outside of the home with an hour drive to and from work. You can imagine the type of Mombie I turned into. It was ugly, painful, and I felt completely isolated. I remember many days arriving home from work without remembering driving, or dozing behind the wheel, and just feeling numb. It’s a dangerous situation and something a lot of working parents struggle with.

Now that I have a second child and have endured the sleepless nights with my oldest, I am making my way through the fog with my second. The ages one to three is a trying time. My youngest was a terrific sleeper as a newborn. She didn’t have any sleep issues until I returned to work and the four-month sleep regression kicked in. And it has been an on again and off again battle with her.

I think there are some misunderstandings when it comes to sleep training. ALL kids and even adults experience some type of sleep disturbance throughout our lives. There are many variations of sleep issues. Here are some misconceptions on sleep training:

You can “hire” a sleep trainer to come and teach your child how to sleep. Too good to be true? Sure is. I consider this type of service a scam because no one can teach anyone how to sleep. It is a rhythm of one’s body. Save your money and buy a $10 book instead. I have read several books on sleep. My very favorite is by Dr. Weissbleth: Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

Routines aren’t necessary. The only “thing” you can teach is consistency, how you respond to your child’s cries at night, and how you put your child to bed each night. This is a decision that will shape your child’s sleep behavior. As you might already know, sleep is a learned behavior. For some, it comes easier than others. Some babies are unicorns and just sleep well without any added parental guidance. Hooray for you if you’re one of those lucky ones.

You do it once and are golden. This is very far from the truth. The first few years are uber challenging with a young child. Sleep dictates their behavior during the day, so you want to make sure they and you are getting it! And if you decide to let your baby cry-it-out (CIO), you will more than likely have to do it more than once or twice. It sucks, it totally sucks. Babies and toddlers will cry though.

My youngest

So when your child cries in the middle of the night and you respond, a pattern is being created – whether good or bad. Keep in mind there are simple things you can do to aide your child to find a restful slumber. Here are some tips I learned along the way that actually help:

Get your spouse on the same page.

Be consistent. This is numero uno. If you’re consistent in your actions, your child will be equally consistent.

Check out free websites or blogs. Think you’re the only one to have a child allergic to sleep? Nope, you aren’t. All information you need can be found online.

White noise machine. Buy one that stays on all night.

Swaddle or sleep sack. So important. Babies like to be swaddled and as your baby grows, you can switch over to a sleep-sack for added warmth and comfort.

Black-out blinds. Another must. Because babies and toddlers should always (well, almost always) nap in the same place they sleep at night.

Cry-it-out. This is by far one of the hardest things you’ll have to do as a parent. I didn’t commit to CIO with my oldest which explains why she didn’t sleep on her own until well into the age of three. And with my youngest, I waited until she was almost nine months. And most pediatricians will tell you to wait until over the age of six to eight months.

Keep in mind there will be times you’ll want to bring your child into your bed. If they are sick or have a bad nightmare. Just understand you will have to train all over, and it’s totally OK. Three days seems to be the magical number for getting them back into the pattern. And with each day the tears are less and less.

Of course, I’m not an expert, just a tired mom yearning for those teenage years when my kids will “sleep till noon.” Or at least I’ve been told.

Did you do sleep training with your child? What did you find helpful in getting more sleep for the whole family?

Top Ten Essentials For Every Man’s Tactical Diaper Bag

Six months ago, if you asked me the question “what was in a diaper bag?” my response would have consisted of exactly 1 word and 2 syllables: “Diapers.”

Six months of parenting experience later, I realize how naive that response was. There are many essentials that make up the necessary kit required for successful trips to local shopping malls, grocery stores or playdates.

Here are my Top Ten Essentials for Every Tactical Diaper Bag:

1. The bag itself. This may seem obvious, but remember the kit mommy carries will differ from daddies. While a pink polka dot oversized purse decorated with holographic Hello Kitty decals and rainbow tailed My Little Pony buttons may work for mommy playdates, it can result in awkward silences when a couple of dads meet up for lunch in a public place. A “tactical diaper bag” with more functional aesthetics, will create a more “manly” appearance and help prevent testosterone levels from dropping to danger levels. Mission Critical and Tactical Baby Gear are both manufacturers of high-quality tactical baby apparel, or purchase a standard outdoors backpack and outfit it as you wish. Pictured is a bag I purchased from Yukon Outfitters and “decorated” myself.

2. Diapers. Once again, an obvious response, but keep in mind that babies can go through multiple diapers in a very brief period of time! Also, keep in mind that babies grow and you’ll need to replenish your inventory with the right size. Having a little one with a liquid diet only poop and a bunch of super tight diapers is a horrible combination and brings us to the third item on our list.

3. Backup outfits. Notice I used the plural term and not singular (don’t forget socks & bibs!) Sometimes a onesie cannot (and should not) be salvaged. Think of a blown out diaper as a bad free agent signing by the Matt Millen era Lions, sometimes they just need to be cut loose and tossed aside.

4. Lots & Lots of Baby Wipes. Think of baby wipes as the Bad Boys era Joe Dumars of your kit: fundamental defense and always there when you need them for the dirty work. I prefer the Costco brand and Zip-locking rationed amounts in the diaper bag. You can never have too many and as long as you keep the Zip-lock tight, the shelf life is pretty long.

5. Puppy Wee Pads. Don’t laugh, these are awesome! Unlike women’s bathrooms, where changing stations are staples, a men’s room Koala changing station in some cities is about as common as spotting a unicorn (looking at you Birmingham). Puppy pads give you the flexibility to turn any surface into a disposable changing station. Also, they’re great on some of the not hygienically maintained Koala stations as well.

6. Padded drop cloth. As previously mentioned, when using a public men’s room in a city not known for having changing stations you may need to use a wet cold hard counter to change. During winter time, this surface can be especially cold. Using a pad underneath the puppy pad adds a warm thermal insulation, as well as cushion for comfort and safety. I like the Drop Zone from Tactical Baby Gear for its convenient foldability.

7. Disinfectant wipes. Babies put everything they can find in their mouths. They really love the taste of toys that have extra flavor from being dropped on the dirty floor. This is something else that can be extra problematic during slushy winter days. Having wipes allows you to wash the toys on the go without access to a men’s room.

8. Provisions. Whether it’s formula or breast milk, an extra bottle (and solids if your baby is old enough) is vital to have in your kit. Unexpected backups on I-696 or construction delays on M-5 can and will throw off your planned timetable and having provisions on hand is a must!

9. Favorite Toy. In our case, it is a little ferris wheel type thingy that suction cups onto a table. For whatever reason, this toy holds Grayson’s attention like no other.  To the point that I just went out and bought 2 additional identical units because I had a nightmare Grayson broke his and the manufacturer discontinued the product. If you have room in your bag, try to keep a couple toys available so you can rotate them and prevent them from getting “stale”.

10. Pocket knife. Before anyone reading this freaks out, this is not for baby to play with, it is to make your life easier. You know how sometimes a new child’s toy will come packaged with so much plastic that it might as well be Han Solo in Carbonite and nothing short of a pitchfork or jack hammer will get it out? Well that is one example where a small pocket knife will come in handy. Another could be that cutting off that unsalvageable onesie we referenced earlier. But don’t go Rambo with this! Beyond safety concerns, many cities have laws preventing collapsible blades over 3 inches.

Honorable Mention: Buy Buy Baby 20% coupons. Hoard these things as if they will one day become the currency in a futuristic land, because that is basically what they are. They also are great for the ante on Daddy Poker nights.

Honorable Mention To Avoid:

Pee-Pee Teepee: If your diaper bag were the 2003 NBA draft, Pee-Pee Tee-Pees would be the Darko Milicic of baby accessories. Great idea on paper but about as useful as a black Hi-lighter in the real world.  The concept is nice.  A thick piece of cloth that steeples over baby boy’s private parts to protect you from getting peed on, but your baby will easily kick it away repeatedly while laughing at you for drafting it in the first place.

What is in your tactical baby bag?

Introducing Rachel Mackay: A Livonia Mom

Introducing Rachel!

:: Down With Detroit ::

Being raised in Garden City by my Mexican grandparents, Detroit was my second hometown. We worshiped, shopped, ate and visited all of our family friends in the heart of Mexican Town. My husband was always near, and I never knew it. He is a Westland native who is also Mexican. He spent most of his summers at his grandmother’s, who happened to live across the street from The Holy Redeemer Church on Junction. We frequented the same restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores and parks.

We absolutely adore the city and all it has to offer. Our favorite spots are Joe Louis Arena, Greektown, Lafayette Coney Island, The Fox Theatre, Hockeytown Café, Comerica Park, Los Galanes, Evies Tamales, Mexican Village, and El Rancho, just to name just a few. Whenever we go to games or have family in town, we try to make it a point to try a new hot (or hole in the wall) spot.

:: My Life ::

My husband Jay and I met when I was 23. We met through mutual friends at his Godson’s baptism. I laid eyes on him and couldn’t look away. Our friends thought they had it all figured out and that we were a match made in heaven. Their theory was that since he was half Mexican and I was half Mexican, we made a whole Mexican. Right, makes perfect sense.

Our marriage took place 10 years ago at the courthouse, downtown. My marriage to Jay was more important than a fairytale day would ever be. Our union is where I wanted to place my focus and energy. I’m actually not even sure if our marriage is legal considering the officiator called me Rachelle the whole time. Fingers crossed because I really don’t want to start over and do another “first 10 years of marriage.”

Helping women in their birth journey is my passion. Because of that, I got my DONA International Doula certification. I also received my certification as an aromatherapist for pregnancy, birth and postpartum. With that, I’ve created a small line of apothecary items for mama’s and babies and support them while they labor. Placenta encapsulation is also a specialty of mine in my work.

:: Babies & Beyond ::

Four years. That’s how long it took until we became parents. Since we always talked about adoption and foster care, we decided to go down that road because pregnancy didn’t look like an option. So we got licensed, I got pregnant,  we got a call for our oldest boys and we instantly had 3 sons. Murphys Law, right?  When my baby was 7 months old, I became pregnant again (yes, I know how that happens). It took so long the first time around, so we threw caution to the wind. Going from a family of 2 to a family of 6 in just under two years has not been easy, to say the least. However, like the beloved Glennon Doyle Melton says, “We can do hard things.” Being part of this group of genuine and compassionate women is something I’m looking forward.

Breaking up with Cable

Cable, we’re done with you.

It wasn’t quite that dramatic, but close. After years of throwing around the idea of canceling cable and years of excuses, we finally did it and canceled our cable subscription.

Cablebreakup

The deciding moment had happened a week or two before at church when they were doing a series of smart financial decisions. One of the points was to not keep up with the Joneses, and that didn’t seem relevant to us. Fast forward a few days later when a light bulb moment went off in my head and I totally realized that HGTV was the equivalent of “keeping up with Joneses.” We don’t watch a lot of TV shows, so when the TV is on and we were looking for something entertaining to watch we most often ended up choosing a show on HGTV  At first it was really fun watching all the home improvement shows, but then night after night of those same shows and we started to grow discontent with our “dream” house that we had moved into not even 11 months ago.

“Well, we really need to budget to get granite counter tops.”

“Ugh, I would like this house so much more if the first floor was all wood.”

“Well, we can’t get granite on the counters without re-configuring the kitchen setup and moving the island around.”

Do I think of myself as such a shallow and materialistic person?  Not normally, but then one of those shows come on where a librarian lives in Alabama and has a 1.3 million dollar budget, and common sense clearly goes flying out the window. I mean, if SHE thinks carpet on the first floor is gross then obviously it’s gross and we need to immediately spend thousands of dollars to get rid of our carpet. I know, trust me I’m rolling my eyes at myself and my #firstworldproblems.

Please keep in mind that none of these things are necessarily bad things to think, but when you’re trying to catch up financially after moving twice in 9 months then those are not great things to think.  Instead of being grateful for this wonderful new house God had provided for us, we were growing increasingly discontent with it. That was the red flag we needed to assess why in the world were we thinking that way?!?!

We looked at our budget and realized we’d save a significant amount per month canceling cable. That coupled with not having a galore of home improvement shows available at our fingertips made the idea too good to resist and . . . we did it! That first night was awesome – our smiles said it all, we were pretty proud of this huge leap we’d taken. We light a fire and sat by the fireplace together chatting about just how great of a decision we had just made.

The second night? The honeymoon phase was over, so to speak. When the kids were finally asleep, all I wanted to do was mindlessly veg on the couch. However, having no cable forced my husband and me to talk (gasp! past 8 pm!) and choose a show together off Hulu. What’s nice about Hulu is that when the show is over – you have to intentionally choose to keep watching something with that super fun countdown timer. The power is in your hands to turn Apple TV off with 3 seconds to spare. We’ve gone from always staying up too late to always getting to bed by 930 because when the show is over we have to mindfully decide whether or not to continue watching a show.  Just getting decent sleep (seriously never happens with young kids) has helped us be better human beings and has made it worth it!

What do kids do without TV?  They climb a lot and take years off their mom’s life.

Even a few weeks later we are SO happy we cut the cord and said goodbye to cable. If you’re even remotely thinking about taking that step I highly encourage you to do it! I haven’t even thought about how desperately I “need” granite counter tops in like 10 day whole days. This is definitely a decision we’ll be sticking with.

Have you dropped your cable and your cable bill? Do you notice it has impacted your family life?
