Nursery School. Preschool. Pre-K. Kindergarten….what?

My head is spinning. Being a parent seriously means making some of the toughest decisions of your life, but also your children’s lives, which makes it even harder.

Our oldest is a little over 2.5 now. Just the other day I was talking with a good friend of mine about her daughter being in nursery school. My friend works from home and has a nanny that watches over her daughter at her house. She enrolled her daughter in nursery school because it would be a great way for her to socialize with other kids. I totally understand and support that. Both of my kids have been in an in-home daycare starting around 6 months old. They get plenty of socialization daily and I don’t think they need nursery school.

Hanging out at Daycare
This is where my dilemma starts:

My friend then tells me that the teachers are also focusing on pinpointing areas where the child needs more work, for example colors, recognizing letters, spelling, speech etc. With that knowledge the teachers will focus specifically on those areas in preschool so that the child will be ready for kindergarten.

In my mind, and you might think the same thing, it doesn’t sound like a bad deal. It’s better to find out “problem areas” earlier and fix them before its too late, right? Well, I wonder, do we test our children too much too soon? Do they  just need a few more weeks and they will do it on their own? At 3 years old, how much should they really know before someone says “That’s it, your child is 3 and he will never learn the colors!”? Is it just me or are our kids constantly being tested and compared to others? At every single wellness check at the doctors (starting at 3 months old I believe) you fill out a questionnaire about what your child can/can’t do. And if they can’t throw or roll the ball at 12 months old, the doctor might want to monitor that “issue”.

When I was pregnant with our first, it seemed like the entire world was pregnant at the same time. We had 6 or 7  friends that all had babies within 2 months from each other (crazy time). But that’s where the constant comparison all began “How big is your baby? Does he sleep through the night yet? Can he sit yet, or walk? How much does he talk? He still wears diapers? Mine can do/Mine is…. (fill in the blanks).” We have all heard those comments and have all been guilty of making them too.

Receiving those comments would scare me at times. Why can’t my son speak as good as others? Why is he still in diapers? Am I a terrible mom for letting him sleep with us when he wants to? Am I making bad decisions for him?

I have learned in the last 3 years to chill out about these things and I learned that EVERY child is unique. There is even a big difference between my own two boys and they have the same parents. But now I am entering into a whole new part of my kids lives: Schooling (did you hear that loud scream? that was me).

Now it really gets serious because our decisions as parents will make a huge difference in their lives. But at 3 years old, do we really need to already test them at what they are good at and what they need improvement on? I know it will be done in a playful way, but the fact that someone might label my child as not developed enough in a certain area scares me and it scares me to know that once they enter the school system their whole lives will be full of constant learning, comparing, doubting and the constant urge to achieve the next better thing a.k.a. Keeping Up with the Jones. (Be honest, you are guilty of it too.)

I want my son to be a child for as long as possible…just naive to the fact that his peers might speak more than he does, that other kids might know the colors better than he does, that others might already spell their names. I don’t want him to learn what it feels like to know that someone might be better at something than he is. Right now, he sees everyone as equals and doesn’t judge. He loves all of his friends the same and I want it to stay like that for hopefully a long time.

Since he has great friends at daycare and also outside of it, and we are not concerned about his development, we will probably skip nursery school and wait for preschool to come around. His dad and I never went to nursery school (I didn’t even have preschool) and I think we both turned out fine.

Mikey and his buddy Hilda drawing...this time on the board and not on each other :)

Here are some of the things we asked ourselves when we made the decision:

– does our child get enough socialization with other kids?

– do we expect our child to need some extra help in some areas?

– are we worried that we are not providing enough development to our child?

– are we able to accommodate dropping off and picking up our child in the middle of the day (Because most nursery and preschools are only a few hours long)?

– are WE ready for him to go to his first school?

1

This is really a decision everyone has to make for their own circumstances and I know for a lot of people it is a great choice to go to nursery school, but I still wonder if some things are being taken too far too soon. What do you guys think?

10 Things Not to Say To Pregnant Women

As I am writing this, I am 23 weeks pregnant with my first child. I admit I am a bit more sensitive these days, but I definitely should have developed thicker skin before I became pregnant.

You see, I’ve found pregnancy to be a time when women are vulnerable to a variety of insensitive comments.  It seems that being pregnant is a signal for people to make comments or offer uninvited suggestions which may offend the soon-to-be mother. Even though people may mean well when showing their concerns about the whole pregnancy adventure, they really need to be more careful of what they say to an expecting woman.

Here, now, is my top 10 list of things that have actually been said to me, most of which should not be said to any pregnant woman.

Top 10 things not to say to pregnant women

10. “Do you want a boy or a girl?” OR “Are you disappointed it’s a girl/boy?”

Honestly does this question really matter? What is the point of even asking this question?  My main concern is the little one, his or her health, and the happiness this bundle of joy will bring to me, regardless of the gender.

9. “Are you sure there is only one baby in there?”

This person might as well have said, “Wow, you sure look fat.”  What I would have liked to say back to this person was, “Wow, thanks so much for saying that. I was wondering whether anyone had noticed my bump, but now I know just how huge it is.”

8. “Damn your hormonal.”

Um, no. I am an intelligent woman feeling annoyed about something. Just because I happen to be pregnant doesn’t mean you can combine this with an unpleasant pregnancy symptom. In case you’re interested, pregnancy mood swing comments are more aggravating than time-of-the-month comments. And besides, sometimes, I’m just in a bad mood.

7. “Ooh should you be doing/drinking/eating that”

It’s a sip of coffee people, not a pot of coffee.  Apparently drinking coffee, soda, using hair dye, eating McDonalds, or pizza, standing too long, sitting too long, nail polish, green tea, etc. are all things that are making me a horrible mother already.  Horrible because I do not refrain myself from almost everything on the planet.

6. “Are you sure that your due date is correct? You look like you’re going to have this baby tomorrow.”

Honestly this comment made me want to go on a diet, if it was even possible to go on a diet while being pregnant!

5. “How much do you weigh now?”

If you wouldn’t ask this question of someone who isn’t pregnant, then don’t ask it of someone who is.

4. “You’re going to do _(Fill in the blank)_ right?”

This “fill in the blank” can be filled with choices like breastfeed, homebirth, C-section, or whatever, saying this to a mom implies that if her decision isn’t the same as you, then it’s not the right decision.  Every mom-to-be has a reason for any decision she makes about her own pregnancy and parenting, all of which is her own choice.

3. “Wow! You still have a ways to go!”

Mean while I am only 23 weeks pregnant, but thanks for not blurting out that I’m as big as the broad side of a barn. Honestly, I really don’t need to be reminded that I’m not at the finish line quite yet. And I’m very much aware of just how many days I have until my due date.

2. “I was ripped open from end to end”

This comment falls into the “horror story” category. Like pregnancy, giving birth is different for every woman. This being my first birthing experience I am scared, honored, anxious, and basically any-feeling-you-can-imagine about this very special time I am about to go through. Hearing someone else’s horror story about pregnancy only makes me want to Google more, which is the one thing you should never do while being pregnant. Someone else’s bad experience shouldn’t set off panic in the mind of soon-to-be mother!

1. “You don’t even look pregnant, you just look FAT.”

OMG, this lady did not just say this! When I first heard this comment I was in shock. What can you say to this comment but to walk away with a smile while trying not to shed any tears. Some people are so ignorant of another’s feelings. Wait until she gets pregnant; maybe one day she will remember this comment and regret her choice of words.

Jet Setting Mom :: Airplane and Travel Tips

Jet Setting Mom airplane and travel tips flying with baby

I had been looking forward to December for months. Not only is this the first year my daughter can sing the Holidays songs, watch Holiday movies and want presents but it also means it was time for our first Family Vacation ON A PLANE!

I have flown with my daughter a few times since she was born. But this was the first time we (Hubby included) flew together with TWO kids – all the way to Southwest Florida. First, a quick 4 days in the St. Pete Beach area and then a 3 hour drive south to Naples to stay with my mom for the rest of the week.

Flying with one “lap” baby is easy – flying with one “lap” baby and a “toddler” in her own seat… Not sure what to expect. For weeks prior to the trip I dreamt about packing the suitcases and diaper bag. How do I pack everything I need in as compact as possible? Luckily, we rented a condo and only needed to pack enough for 24 hours. First stop off the plane: WALMART.

Airplane + Travel Tips

While traveling with baby…..and a toddler!

PACK LIGHT

We only packed two suitcases for the four of us: (1) for my husband and I to share and (1) for the kids. I also threw in a nylon bag (basically a reusable shopping bag) to double as a “beach” bag. Instead of my usual diaper bag, we used a backpack that had multiple pockets and was easier to carry through the airplane (and Hubby did’t have to be embarrassed carrying a flowered diaper bag!) Both places we stayed at had a washer/dryer so I only packed enough for 4 days.

THE DIAPER BAG

This one gave me the most headache. What if there’s a blowout on the plane? What if there is spit up? Or she leaks through her pull up? Or he spits up on me?? I dressed in layers so in case anything gets on me, I can just remove a layer. I packed:

  • Changing pad
  • (6) diapers each w/a roll of diaper bags to dispose them in & wipes
  • Travel size A&D Ointment
  • (2) bibs plus a back of disposable bibs
  • (2) cotton diapers (or burp rags)
  • Small blanket (it’s actually a swaddle blanket)
  • (1) bottle & (1) Sippy cup
  • Container for milk (we bought white milk at McDonald’s once we passed through security)
  • Travel Tylenol & syringe
  • Individual wrapped formula packs (BEST. THING. EVER.)
  • (4) packs of food w/spoons that screw right on
  • Snacks for the plane
  • Extra outfit for each (sleep n play, long sleeve shirt, leggings)
  • Copies of their birth Certificates, medical cards, and contact information

Our daughter brought her small suitcase on wheels to carry her toys and small items to keep her busy on the flight.

AT THE AIRPORT

Check as much as you can! The less you drag through the airport and on to the plane the better!

  • Check the luggage
  • Check the Infant carrier /car seat (We added a car seat to our rental car at our final destination). Don’t forget to put the car seats in a bag or a large garbage bag!
  • That leaves me to “wear” the baby, push the toddler in the stroller, Hubby wears backpack diaper bag and we are all hands free
  • Check the stroller at the gate right before boarding!
  • Change all diapers before getting on the plane. You don’t want to get stuck changing a diaper in the airplane restroom (trust me – NOT FUN).

TravelingwithBaby2

ON THE PLANE

  • Download videos/movies before you get in the air! And if you want to purchase Wi-Fi – do it before the plane takes off (if possible)
  • Suckers/milk to prevent the ears from popping. We fed the baby during the takeoff/landing and let the toddler have a special sucker!
  • Sit back and relax.
  • Bring a small bag of “toys” – books, blanket, and favorite doll.

Once you land, and pack up all the luggage and get in the car – it’s time for FUN! Both my kids did excellent on the way down and even better on the way home! Both were asleep before the plane ever lifted off the ground which means I got to take a nap too!

Introducing the DMB’S of Megan Hammond

Hi Detroit mamas!

I am Megan Hammond and am so happy to be part of the DMB team. I am wife to my amazing husband Patrick, and we are parents of two beautiful little girls. Patrick and I have been together since the high school years, so we have a lot of history. He truly is the man of my dreams, and the best husband. We moved to Birmingham last year and love it. I am so happy to raise my children in such a great area with lots of opportunities.

Charlotte Grace is our oldest, who is five years old. She has all the traits of a first born, and we sooo love her for that! Charlotte is our girly girl, who loves all things pink! She is our ballerina, princess playing, and Frozen singing sweetie. She made us parents at the young age of 21 and truly can not imagine life without her.

Vivian Claire is our spunky second born who is 18 months. She is so darn silly, and is always looking to give someone a laugh. She has also turned into quite the stinker these days! She loves to climb and get into mischief, so she definitely keeps us on our toes!

And that’s not all folks, we recently found out we are expecting in June to ANOTHER girl!! We are over the moon excited for more bows, ballerinas and tea parties in our house!

Aside from being a stay at home mom, I am Birmingham’s ( & surrounding areas) Trunk Keeper for Matilda Jane clothing. I absolutely love my job! Matilda Jane is an adorable girls, tween and women’s line that is sold only through trunk keepers. You can email me anytime at [email protected] I can’t wait to share my journey of being a momprenuer and all of the up’s and down’s of life as a parent!

What I Know About Divorce

DETROIT MOMS BLOG what I know about divorce

No one gets married to get divorced. Let’s face it, when we say “I do” we think this is forever. Till death do us part, in sickness and in health. In part, these are the vows that we take and believe. Unfortunately, reality kicks in and via whatever facts and circumstances of our lives, one party or both decide divorce is the unfortunate resolve to “I do.” Not an easy situation to be in. There are many questions as to what happens next, especially if minor children are involved.  I know this all to be true as I am a divorced, full time working mom of two minor children. However, I couldn’t be happier! Every situation is different, but here is what I have learned about divorce:

True Happiness Does Exist

“Are you living your best life?” I heard Oprah Winfrey ask this question a few times on her show and never thought twice about the question until I tried to answer it myself. Am I living my best life? I had to reply no and asked myself why not? I had grown as an individual and not together with my partner. I was not the same woman I was in my 20’s when I said “I do.” I had matured, was settled in a career and was a mother of two kids. My life revolved around finding nanny’s, schools, cooking, their extra curricular activities, birthday parties (which seemed to be every week – good Lord) and raising a happy, healthy family while still working a demanding full time job.  My episodes of happiness, when I look back, were episodic. So episodic I thought it was normal.

I was carrying around a mountain of mental stress and anguish during my marriage. The beginning of our separation represented a new found freedom that I had not had in over 13 years. I felt an immediate weight off my shoulders and I was ready to start this new journey. I was ready to be around people who were positive and inspiring and who loved life. I did simple things like “Like” as many positive and spiritual authors on Facebook so my feed was filled with inspiration and hope, spirituality, love and of course the “girl power” quotes that reminded me I was not alone in this space and I could most definitely be a great mother and provider.

I took more bubble baths, started my days listening to gospel music, singing in my car, and treating myself to a nice dinner on my kid free Wednesday night’s. In no time my soul was filled with such inspiration and power and I started to feel whole again. I read “The Power of Now” by Eckart Tolle and for 1 year gave myself permission to be responsibly reckless. I did everything I wanted to do during this year without worrying about money (within reason) or feeling confined because the hardest battle was over and I had succeeded. The hardest battle was facing the fact that I wasn’t happy, the person I was married to was draining me of my energy, my breath, my life and that I needed to move forward in life without him.  Once I acknowledged and acted on that – the rest was easy. I celebrated my birthday for the first time and really enjoyed it. I took my kids on vacation and loved every second of it. I started dating, spent more time with the girls, and even got a new job within the same company. My life turned completely around and my soul took in every ounce of happiness and joy that I was getting. The only thing I didn’t do was get a tattoo but it’s still on my list!

Having a Great Support Group Is Critical

As I began this next phase of my journey I started therapy. I felt like I needed to get a better understanding of the new me, discuss intellectually the feelings and emotions I was having and how I could be a better mother and person going forward because lets face it I played a role in the demise of my marriage as well.  The year of therapy was exactly what I needed.

My therapist is an amazing woman who challenged me, made me answer tough questions and helped guide me to the person I am today. Her support helped me through the rough periods of the divorce process and her suggestions for what I could do to help myself were always right on time. One thing she told me, based on my personality, is that I need to learn to accept help when it’s offered and to ask for help when I need. A very foreign concept for me. I am Super Woman after all (or so I thought I had to be).

I can now say I have mastered this lesson successfully!

I have always been a person who has done for herself with little help from family or friends. Logistically now, it is sometimes impossible for me to be in two places at once with two active children with their extra-curricular activities, birthday parties, and play dates. At times I have been forced to ask a friend or family member for help and they have all jumped in enthusiastically and willingly without having a second thought. It has brought me to tears to see just how much we are loved and supported. Not to mention my parents who have been nothing less than extraordinary. I will never be able to repay any of them for the amount of support they have provided. It has been in-valuable.

Kids Mirror What They See

I met with a child therapist before our transition to ensure we provided the kids with enough appropriate information regarding what was occurring, what was going to happen next, and to identify any warning signs that either child was negatively reacting to our new reality.

We met a few times because I was obviously very emotional about this piece of the process.  They were the reason I had stayed several years too long and I didn’t want their world to fall apart now because I decided to be happy again.

In one of our last sessions the therapist said “kids mirror what they see.” I’ve always been a pretty positive, easy going mom but when she said that I up’d my “positive” game. I started making sure we went to church every week they were with me (and to the early service because the Sunday school teacher at the early service loves the kids). I make them listen to Joel Osteen every morning on the way to school, and we started praying at night and sharing one thing we were thankful for in the day.

We started eating dinner at the table (vs. the bar in the kitchen) and really started talking about our day. It was good for me too because I started to share another piece of me with the kids. If I had a bad day at work, I told them. If I was recognized at work I shared that with them as well. We also began to have more fun together and we laugh all the time now. I can honestly say my kids transitioned very well and have been thriving well. They are loved beyond measure and I know they can feel the love and support they have.

Love After Divorce

So love does exist after divorce. It’s a little scary getting back out there but I have been kind of excited about this piece of my journey. The hope and inspiration to make better choices the second time around with the knowledge and maturity I have now is exciting and empowering.

I’ve dated a few men, fell in love, had my heart broken but I understand this is all part of the journey. I have learned something about myself from each of these men and have even added to my “list” of what I want in my next partner based off certain aspects of their personalities and character traits.

Love is a bit more complicated than I remember it before. Being older and dating is different in the sense that now we all come with many different facts and circumstances from our careers, life responsibilities, children, etc… I have chosen to keep my love life separate from my home life.  No one has been special enough yet to meet my two biggest assets. But being divorced has not made me bitter or jaded. The possibility of limitless happiness, true love and an amazing man to enhance our family unit makes the journey worth it.

5 Tips for a More Enjoyable Trip to SeaLife

At the end of January, Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills opened a huge SeaLife with several big tanks of water full of 5,000 water creatures, and let me just tell you… it is AWESOME!!!! It is truly great for all ages. If you have kids that you are homeschooling or kids between 5-12, they have a lot of their information digitalized to engage the kids to discover and learn new things. There is also one tank that lets you touch starfish and other creatures.

My husband and I took our kids on a Friday morning and I want to give you some tips on how to make your trip easier and more enjoyable.

20150227_105500-1

1. THIS IS A MUST! Trust me: Get your tickets online in advance.

First, you can save a couple of bucks per ticket if you buy the tickets online (who doesn’t like to save some money). However, don’t do it on the day you plan on going. Most likely there will be no tickets left. If you plan on going on a weekend, try to book it at least 5 days in advance, just to be safe.

Secondly, by booking online you are saving yourself a looooong wait in line there. We all know our kids only have a couple of hours where they are happy, lets not waste them in line. This is how the aquarium works: everyone with a season pass can just walk up to the registry and walk in without any issues. Next in priority are the ones that got their tickets online. Once that line clears of people who purchased their tickets online, the people who just walked up will get their turn, but the line with people who already purchased their tickets online constantly gets refilled. So you might have to wait 30+ minutes. Not fun with little kids!

2. Only bring a stroller if really necessary!

I am sure you have been to the zoo on beautiful days. As soon as you pull into the parking lot it seems to be stroller city….same here. Everyone has a stroller, but unlike the zoos wide paths, it is very narrow in some spots and such a pain to get around. So, do yourself and everyone else a favor, leave your stroller in the car if you can.

My son in the tunnel

3. Do NOT go on the weekends.

We went on a Friday around 10/11 am. It was not even crazy busy, but just enough that at times we had to skip some highlights because there were too many people around. I can only imagine what going on the weekends would look like. If you can, go during the week. Even better, if you have older kids, go during lunch hour or when most little kids take naps (1-3pm). The crowd will be smaller.

"Touch that..."
“Touch that…”

4. Bring your camera.

It sounds like an obvious one, but there is so much to take awesome photos off. If you have a nice camera and no little kids and no stroller, bring it. Otherwise your cellphone will be just fine.

Lots of fishy everywhere...

5. Bring your own snack.

At the end of the aquariums, they have a little snack area where you can sit and eat your own personal food while your kids have the chance to burn some more energy on a (it’s small but worth it) jungle gym.

On a side note: It is not cheap to go, however, in my eyes well worth the money. If you live close enough and have the time to go often, you should really think about getting the season pass.

Enjoy, it’s a great, fun and colorful place to go during this grey time of year.

A Valentines Date Night at Home {with or without kids?!}

This year we are going to enjoy a romantic date-night before Valentines and spend a fun evening together as a family on Valentine’s Day.  We love our babies and wouldn’t have a day dedicated to LOVE any other way.  The day will be packed full of love, as it will be just a typical Saturday of course!  Although, my boys will think they want their Saturday ritual which includes a stop at a favorite local restaurant for their bbq ribs to-go after an afternoon of football with Dad, however Mom has something else in mind….

Mom’s Berry Heart Healthy
Valentines Dinner Menu

{Honestly, it is one of our family favorites around here, and not a single one of them will turn up their nose to dinner, and well, I impress myself every time I make it at home.  It is simple, easy, and looks + tastes fancy.}

Baked Salmon + Buttered Garlic Beans + Mashed Potatoes

with a Berry Vinaigrette Salad

>>> Strawberry Brownie Trifle <<<

I love to cook and I love simple recipes. When I look for recipes that inspire me to cook I look for 8 or less ingredients.  The goal is lots of flavor, simple real ingredients + simple easy to follow steps.

This is a meal that can be prepped quickly and easily for any busy mom.  And you can easily make it extra V-Day special by setting the table and using the “nice” dishes and maybe skip the sippies!  And if your sweetie forgets to bring you flowers, pick them up for yourself at the market, why not?!  {Although I hope you do get flowers!}

Salad ::

Baby Spinach

Fresh Berries {Mix it up or just use your favorite berry!}

Raw Almonds {Chopped}

Berry Vinaigrette ::  makes about 3/4 cup

1/4 cup of oil

2-3  large strawberries

small handful of raspberries

a little bit of sea salt

2 to 3 tbs. apple cider vinegar

1 to 2 tbs. honey

3 tbs.  water

a little bit of dried or fresh basil

Simply make a bed of spinach, sprinkle berries, chop almonds and sprinkle on top!

For the vinaigrette simply place all ingredients into a blender and give it a whirl!

Simple + DeliciousMeal at Home (2)

Baked Salmon ::

I have a simple no-fuss cooking method for the salmon, or any fish of your choice, that takes only a few minutes to prep.

Select a piece of salmon to feed your crowd

Simply rub with oil, we like to use coconut oil, both the top and bottom

Place the filet with skin side on baking sheet

Add seasons  {Our seasonings of choice are :: old bay, sea salt, chili powder, garlic powder, paprika, and pepper}

Add a few thin slices of lemon on top

If the filet is less than a 1/2″, 30 mins at 350 degrees should be perfect.  Add 5-10 mins. if filet is on the thicker side!

You will know when the fish is done when it is no longer translucent and flakes with a fork!

Buttered Garlic Beans ::

Sauteed 2-3 cloves of minced garlic in 2 tbs. of butter in a pan

Add washed fresh green beans and sauteed for about 10 mins.

Sprinkle crushed almonds on top!

Mashed Potatoes ::

I don’t have any secrets here, I follow the same recipe my parents have used forever!  Peel, chop + boil potatoes for 30 mins., drain water, add 2 tbs. butter and a few tbs. of milk, season with salt + pepper, and mash it UP!

I am looking at trying this healthy recipe!  Garlic Cauliflower Mash (Fake Mashed Potatoes)

Or making regular mashed potatoes in the crock pot and trying this recipe!  Slow Cooker Mashed Potatoes

For the LOVE of strawberries!

A Simple Strawberry Brownie Trifle ::

Pull out a pretty trifle dish or any glass bowl and make a crowd pleasing dessert!

Bake brownies according to directions

Let brownies completely cool and slice into little cubes  about 3/4″

Sprinkle a layer of brownies on bottom of dish

Follow with a layer of cool whip

Followed by a layer of sliced fresh strawberries

Repeat!

Finish the top with crushed almonds or pecans!

The evening will be full of LOVE, great food and board games!  Maybe we will finish it off with a cozy snuggle on the sofa watching a movie.  An evening surrounded by my boys sounds like perfection to me!
