A Dose of Detroit: Local Subscription and Mail-Order Boxes

Other than one grocery pickup, my car hasn’t moved in over three weeks. Our family definitely recognizes that we are lucky to be able to stay home and work from home, and we are happy to stay put. We have explored the gamut of ideas for homeschooling, crafts, and cooking, and I realized recently that we need to change it up. We need a little dose of Detroit. To provide a break from our new norm, and maybe a little sanity saver in a box, check out some of the local monthly subscription and mail-order boxes I’ve found below.

Activities for Kids

Easy PZ Play boxes are full of sensory fun for kids! Including homemade play dough and small items and toys for each themed box, these are sure to provide hours of fun! Locally owned in Howell. Mail-order box.

Wee Bee Box was co-founded by a local Birmingham mom. With a range of activity boxes to choose from, each includes beautifully curated items to fit a theme. Mail-order box. Shipping may be delayed a “wee bit” as days have been reduced, but they are still shipping.

Boxes for Parental Sanity

The Boxy Momma Company was started by a Waterford mom who saw the need for uplifting, funny, and joyful gifts for moms. This is the box for any mom who deserves a little something right now…which I’m pretty sure is every mom. Try the Momma’s Corona Relief Box today. Monthly subscription and mail-order box.

Detroit Beauty Box features health, beauty, and wellness products from Detroit or Michigan-based companies. They aim to feature 20 businesses per month, either with products or redeemable codes for salon services. Get yourself a little self-care boost! Monthly subscription box with three budget-friendly price points.

Detroit Bold Coffee is here for you with everything from bagged coffee and K-cups to merch and gift sets. At our house, we never realized how much coffee the office pot must put out per day– we are running out quickly! “Detroit Bold is the best of us…with a can-do spirit.” Monthly subscription and mail-order.

Beverages of the Adult Variety

Detroit Vineyards is here to answer the call for those of us who have run dry and don’t want to hit the grocery store. They are even offering a Socially Distanced Saturday Tour and Tasting each Saturday until business returns to normal. Order the wines ahead to do your tasting live with the winemaker. How fun is that? Get penny shipping on purchases of three or more bottles. Mail-order and twice-yearly subscription.

Woods Wholesale Wine, a long-standing business in Grosse Pointe Woods, has you covered with beer, wine, and spirits shipped to your door. Find many local favorites as well as hard-to-find selections and traditional offerings. Mail-order. Shipments may be slightly delayed, but they are working hard to serve you.

Savory Foods at Your Door

American Coney Island knows you miss them, and they are making sure you can still enjoy your coney dogs at home. Prepared fresh in-store and shipped on Mondays, their coney box includes Dearborn Sausage hotdogs, the famous Keros family Detroit chili sauce, and all the fixings. Mail-order box.

Detroit Style Pizza has everything you need to make your own delicious pizza at home.  Choose a boxed kit that includes the pan and dough mix, or shop a la carte. I recently made my first Detroit-style pizza and I have been craving it again ever since! Whatever you do, don’t skip the Brick cheese! Mail-order box.

Mongers’ Provisions wants to support you with their cheese or chocolate subscription boxes. Pay in advance for a three-, six-, or 12-month subscription and get a happy delivery each month. A gourmet box like this is sure to provide a smile when you’re at the end of your stockpiles. You can also order a wide array of cheeses, meats, and more in their online shop. Monthly subscription and mail-order.

Zingerman’s is always here for foodies with mail-order goods. Zingerman’s has clubs for everything from bread and olive oil to bacon of the month and cheese-pairing clubs. If you’re a bacon fan, I personally recommend the cherrywood smoked bacon…or pretty much ANY bacon Zingerman’s carries. Monthly subscription and mail-order.

Sweet Locals to Support

Rose’s Fine Food has garnered national fame among foodies as one of Detroit’s best diners. During current times, they are cooking meals for healthcare workers. Donate one online today! In addition, you can order paczki, cakes, and more through their website, or sign up for a monthly paczki subscription through Goldbelly. Monthly subscription and mail-order.

Whey Better Bakery out of Plymouth has incorporated whey protein into their baked goods. “The protein keeps you full…so over-indulging is seldom a problem when eating our sweet treats!” Recently slated to appear on HSN with their famous peanut butter cups, the spot got canceled due to current events. This local small business could really use your support!  Monthly subscription and mail-order.

Not only will one of these boxes arriving at your door bring a smile and a break, you’ll also be supporting local businesses. We all know small businesses are suffering right now, so let’s do what we can to give them a little boost. Give one of these monthly subscription and mail-order boxes a try!

Here at Detroit Mom, I am surrounded by an awesome community of women who have helped me find a place where I feel I truly belong. I’m a proud foodie who keeps crazy busy with cooking and canning, gardening, decorating, craft projects, and more. My husband of 19 years is Jason, and we have Gwenna, 11, and Larson, 7, as well as a silver Lab named Indy. We have lived in New Hudson for almost four years now. Mid Michigan is home for me, but after my husband graduated college, we spent 16 years moving around his home state of Indiana. Just prior to moving back to Michigan, we lived in Southern California for three years, exploring and extreme-adventuring with our kids to every beautiful outdoor location we could find. We are the family that spends more weekends away than at home, and our kids are master-level road-trippers. Most of our summers are spent at the lake, where I'm convinced it's not a proper summer without a dip in the water every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Reach out and say hi sometime!
