Is Santa Real Mommy?

childhood christmas

I think we all remember the exact day and surrounding circumstances when we found out the one thing we prayed wasn’t’ true; Santa Claus isn’t real.  Oh the heartbreak! I was in 3rd grade and sleeping in the loft of my childhood home.  My four sisters and I had the entire upper floor to ourselves; my twin sisters (2 sets) slept in double beds in the main part of the room and I slept in the single bed, positioned under Cape Cod windows overlooking the main road.  That Christmas Eve, our family attended the special Advent by Candlelight service at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Blanc. Traditionally, we had to get to bed immediately when we arrived home, so that Santa could deliver our presents. I had decided, ‘Tonight was the night I was going to SEE SANTA!’

I pretended to go to sleep and, when I was sure everyone else was sleeping, I sat up and watched out the windows above my bed. I waited and waited. Quietly patting my face to stay awake so that I could finally see Santa.

And then it happened!

I heard the familiar “HO! HO! HO!” downstairs!! I flew out of my bed and practically made it down the flight of stairs in one giant leap! Looking into the living room where the family tree peacefully stood lit so beautifully in the dark night, I saw my dad and mom sitting on the couch admiring their wonderful work! I ran to them and cried for what seemed like hours.

My parents tried to explain that it really was Santa, that they had heard the same “HO! HO! HO!” and tried to see him as well. I knew in my heart that they were just trying to make me feel better. Although I was the last of my seven siblings to learn the awful truth, I survived. Somehow, I felt more ‘grown-up’ at the expense of losing a bit of my childhood innocence.  In a way, discovering the truth is a Rite of Passage for children.

Now I have 3 children of my own who are far too old to still believe. But I continue to hide their presents and wait to put them under the tree until they are sleeping. There is something so wonderful seeing the excitement in their eyes when they wake on Christmas morning.

Is santa real family 1

Is santa real family 2

So while it may seem like a hassle to continue the Santa charade, I think as moms, who may have that little girl who still believes inside of her, we are more than willing to do whatever it takes to prolong our children’s innocence.

Merry Christmas and God Bless Your Family this Holiday Season!

Happy Thanksgiving Break

Embrace The Simple Pleasures Now, Don’t Save Them

Katie Allow yourself pleasures...

It all started with a tea bag. I had one left. I could get more. It was my favorite tea but nothing exotic, I could easily get more. I was standing in the kitchen wanting to drink it but consciously observed myself thinking, Not today, you may really need that one day.

But wait.

Wouldn’t using that make today better? Why wasn’t I allowing myself to to what I wanted? Why didn’t I believe that I deserved that tea bag today? What was I rationing it for?

I realized it wasn’t just the tea bag. I was only allowing myself a certain amount of pleasure each day. I looked back even at that morning previous to the tea bag incident and there were other examples of this:

  • I hadn’t allowed myself to use an aromatherapy bath bomb—again saving it for a rainy day.

  • I hadn’t allowed myself to wear my favorite underwear—claiming I might need them a ‘better or more important day’.

  • I hadn’t allowed myself to listen to my favorite playlist—claiming I might get sick of them and should save them for a better day.

The list went on and that was just that morning…woah.

If I had denied myself that much pleasure just that morning and it was only 10:00 am, how much pleasure was I missing over the course of my life?

In that moment of awareness back in the kitchen with the tea bag, I decided to change—to choose pleasure and choose myself. I not only boiled the water and allowed my tea bag to steep but I did so in my favorite tea-cup and saucer, the really nice beautiful one that I’ve been waiting to use until the president visits my apartment.

I sat, enjoyed my tea put on my favorite music and allowed my creativity to flow. I ended up writing this blog post, cruising through emails, and having an amazing day. Why? Because I allowed myself my favorite tea? Not exactly. Because I allowed myself to follow my genuine full pleasure.

When we allow ourselves pleasure, true, full, deep pleasure we are closer to your true self and therefore can hear clearer intuition. It’s difficult to hear your internal guidance when you’re sad, stressed anxious and simple to hear it when you’re happy and deep in pleasure. It is a beautiful thing that the life is designed that way, so why do we block it?

It is because we are not valuing ourselves. Our belief that we’re not good {smart/pretty/thin/sexy/funny…insert your word here_____} enough blocks us from allowing ourselves to do, eat, be who we truly are. We think, who am I to be great? Who am I to allow myself what I want, I don’t deserve it.

Be well…

Don’t Go Work Out.

let's get real

Welcome Holiday Season!

Come on delicious turkey. Ham. Pies. Your aunt’s bomb-diggity sweet potato casserole. Gravy. Potatoes. Cookies. Cakes. Pies – did I mention pies yet?

You know it’s here. Time to get our eats on! Pull out the maternity pants and leggings to make room for the extra eating. Don’t lie you know your holiday outfits revolve around stretchy materials! It’s alright, mine do too!

But let’s get real. We are going to indulge and come January 1 we are going to write that New Year’s Resolution to get back in the gym to work out and “drop that holiday weight” “drop the baby weight” or “drop that pant size.” Something happened when we had that baby {or more!} to our bodies and we are sick of feeling the way that we do.

Yet, January 10th comes, it’s too hard and we stop. So stop this cycle. Don’t Go Work OUT, GO set some realistic, measurable, obtainable GOALS.

We didn’t set ourselves up for success. We thought, I’ll go to the gym every day and get in those skinny pants from high school. How can you start preparing now so that come 1/10/15 you aren’t back on the couch watching Downtown Abbey finishing off the half gallon {but let’s be real it’s only like 1/3 gallon} ice cream…

1. Figure out your WHY.

Sure it’d feel great to rock those skinny jeans, but I promise you when you hear that chocolate chip cookie screaming your name at 10:30pm on Friday night that WILL NOT keep you from chowing down. Therefore you need to connect to WHY I want to get fit. Think about the five senses. How you will feel, what you will look like, what your confidence level will be like, how will your husband react to you, how will you feel going shopping. For us visual folks, we need a constant visual reminder of sweet abs, cut arms, and some swanky clothes that we’d look killer in if we had the body we desire. Before moving on to other steps figure out your WHY.

2. Set GOALS.

This is NOT “I want to fit in those skinny jeans” and pray it happens. You need to break that goal down. When do you want to fit  in those jeans? Say 5 months from now. Say you need to lose 20 pounds to get into them. That means you need to consistently lose 4 pounds a month in order to hit your goal. That means 1 pound a week. Completely doable!

3. Determine HOW

. So momma, how are you going to do it? You know you have to drop 1 pound a week, so what changes do you need to make in order to do it. What I have experienced most in my journey is I set unrealistic and unobtainable HOWS. Like I’m going to work out every day for one hour and I’m going to squeeze in an extra work out 3 times a week while also ONLY eating vegetables. That screams FAIL. Promise me you will not say “I will go to the gym every day” {unless you are IN that habit!}. Start with working out 3 times a week and get really consistent at that. Then you can increase. Take a good look at your diet and remove processed food, refined sugars, just “crap” {don’t even act like you don’t know what I’m talking about and PLEASE throw away the “natural Cheetos” unless you can find me a Cheeto plant that produces Cheetos}.

4. Dream IT into REALITY.

Think about your goal. Say your goal out-loud. Speak positive confessions, like “I will lose 20 pounds. I’m worth it. I’m beautiful.” Positive confessions are powerful. I love speaking Biblical truths as well such as “There is a plan and purpose for my life” “God created me for GOOD not evil” “I’m more valuable than rubies and gold!”

5. DO NOT GIVE UP!

I believe that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to! Go achieve your dreams!

Gearing Up For A Successful Black Friday

It’s almost time for one of the most beloved days of savings all year long—that’s right, Black Friday is nearly upon us! Though I refuse to go to the stores on Thanksgiving, I will gladly get up in the wee hours of Black Friday morning to snag some deals. I’ve been doing this for nine years strong, and I am here to tell you that there are some amazing deals to be found. Sure it takes some planning, patience, and determination—but it’s well worth it when you see what you come home with.

As a Black Friday veteran I do have some helpful tips that will make your trips to the store more productive and enjoyable. Sure you will hear the negative advice, but there truly are some great deals and bargains that make the trip worth it. This has become a fun tradition within our family, and I hope that these tips can help you to do the same.

black friday tips

Always Go In With A Plan

Sure it sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed at how many people don’t go in with a plan. Even if you’re going for one specific gift, you need to think it through beforehand. Make your shopping list and attach as much detail to it, and then that can work as the framework of your shopping trip. Know where you want to go logistically speaking and then plan around that in terms of which gifts you want to get.

There is no such thing as too prepared out there! If you are somebody that is willing to wait in line, then more power to you. For me personally though I find that I can get just as great of deals if I go at 4am, than to wait for hours and cut into turkey time. A plan will help you to figure out which works best for you.

Do Your Research As It Will Really Pay Off

I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that I have a list for the list for Black Friday. I will look into what stores are offering deals that fit my needs. I have an idea of what I want to get my kids, my husband, and all of my family and friends.

I will say that sometimes you change it on the fly—as a $5 DVD or a $20 men’s watch simply can’t be missed out on! Know what you have to spend, who you’re buying for, and then look into the Black Friday ads beforehand. This will save you time and a lot of frustration the day of, I promise you that. Sometimes you may even find that getting yourself a little something is a nice reward for bargain shopping.

Know Which Stores Fit Your Needs Best and Focus On Them

We have a planned route every year as to where we’re going to hit and then we work our way from there. If you happen to have a shopping plaza nearby that offers favorites like Kohl’s, Target, Old Navy, and such stores then it can help you to get a lot of shopping done in a close proximity.

Look into which stores are going to best fir your needs and then plan your route accordingly. Everyone has different things to shop for, and so if you know what stores you need to go to it will help you to focus. Having a route of the stores you want to hit can help you to cross things off the list little by little—that is shopping magic!

Always Refuel

Everyone laughs when I tell them this, but there is great power in a cup of coffee and small meal. You will be amazed at how you can start to get “hangry” and crabby when you haven’t had anything to eat and the crowds just get to you. Bring a snack with you and plan out your route around a good breakfast spot, something quick like Panera works well.

Don’t underestimate the power of refueling as it will keep you going and ensure you stay focused, rather than wandering through the aisles aimlessly tossing things into your cart. Keep your energy up and you won’t become a casualty of Black Friday shopping!

Pack Your Patience and Have Fun With It

We listen to Christmas music in the car and try to have fun with the whole Black Friday experience. It is nice to save money and come home with a bunch of things on your list, so try to enjoy it. Yes people can be rude sometimes, but don’t let them get you down. Weekend Happenings In + Around Detroit This Holiday {November 26th – 30th}

In + Around Detroit november 26-30 2014 thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!  Our kindest wishes go out to everyone this week as we give thanks to all the blessings in our lives.

What we LOVE about this holiday…

– Thanksgiving is a non-religious holiday celebrated by pretty much everyone.  There are no rules + no presents!

– It is a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and a way to celebrate kindness.

– Families reflect on the year and give thanks for their blessings.

-Gathering with family and friends to enjoy an enormous feast, almost always a meal complete with a roasted turkey with all the trimmings and pumpkin pie.

– Almost ALL businesses close down, even workaholics take a break and use this holiday as an excuse to take a long weekend away.   It is a major travel week, even more travel than Christmas!

– As mentioned above it is about the gathering of  family + the feast, but let’s not forget about the parade + football!

Enjoy~

We Want To Adopt A Child – How Much Does That Cost?

Starting a family is expensive, but when you add adoption expenses into the mix? Wow. I’m not going to lie – adoption is uber expensive. When my husband and I first started our adoption adventure, we had some rose colored glasses on. We were absolutely clueless as to exactly how expensive it could be. One agency we contacted wanted $15,000 up front, with the possibility of needing to pay more down the line.  Oh, and paying all of that money to the agency would not guarantee we would receive a child. To say we had sticker shock would be a bit of an understatement. As it turned out, we were very fortunate. We had a birth mother approach us and because of that we were able to “a la cart” our adoption, so to speak. That way we could pay for each expense as it came up and we would not have to obtain an agency.

Once a birth mother approached us to adopt her child {EEEK! We were going to be a family!} we had a due date, and along with that came an end date to raise money for adoption expenses. It also meant that there were less than eight months to get everything completed – home inspections, legal paperwork and doctor’s visits.  We needed to start saving (hoarding?) money – FAST!

First thing a friend suggested we do was open a donation page. There are many sites to choose from, gofundme and giveforward is just a couple that I have used personally. They allowed us to crowd fund by placing links on every social media website where we had an account. The donations started almost immediately thanks to all the awesome people in our lives. 🙂

Now that we had our donation page up and running, it was time to get creative. We needed to come up with fundraisers that would appeal to everyone we knew.

Appealing Fundraisers for Everyone You

Here are just a few of the ideas that we and our friends came up with:

  • Direct sales of CHOCOLATE! Very few people hate chocolate, plus it’s consumable so people will come back for more and more. I signed up as a direct sales consultant, first with Lindt (they have since bowed out of the direct sales industry), and then Dove Chocolate Discoveries. In the month leading to Christmas I managed to earn $1000 to put toward our adoption expenses.

  • ANY direct sales company will offer to do a fundraiser for you. Check with friends or the company itself to find a distributor/consultant. You may even get a DOUBLE BONUS and get free stuff from the company along with a donation. The free items can be used at a later event as a prize. We earned a couple hundred dollars to put toward our adoption fund by hosting parties!

  • Tattoo fundraiser – our friend is a licensed tattoo artist and held a “Tattoo Party” for us. He was extremely generous and gave us 50% of what he earned each day – all we had to do was get customers for him! If this is something that you’re in to, talk with your artist to see if he or she would be willing to help. We earned about $500 with minimal effort on our part.

  • Casino bus trip – if you have friends that like to gamble, this is a GREAT money maker! Our dear friend Scott handled booking the bus, contacting the casino for comps and such and planned fun activities for the ride to and from FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek, MI. We ended up clearing just over $1800 to put toward our adoption expenses!

  • Silent Auction – we elected to have a prize raffle drawing instead of a silent auction, but a silent auction just might work for you!

  • T-shirt sales – we are fortunate enough to have many graphic designers in our life and one volunteered her time and created a t-shirt for us to sell. We’re also fortunate enough to know someone that has a screen printing shop. We made a few hundred dollars (I can’t remember the exact amount) on t-shirt sales during Milford Memories Summer Festival.

  • Bowling fundraiser – the local bowling alleys in our area are really great when it comes to hosting fundraisers. I’ve been to a few and was thrilled when the owner of Holly Lanes in Holly, MI offered the use of his alley to help us out. We earned just shy of $1000 at this fundraiser.

  • Raffles – during our bowling fundraiser we held two different raffles:
    • a 50/50 raffle: Tickets were available in $5 and $10 increments. We drew the winner at the end of our event.
    • Prize raffle: What should we raffle? EVERYTHING! We asked everyone we knew to donate new items or gift certificates, checked with local businesses about donations of goods or services and also added in any free items we had received from direct sales companies. Purchased raffle tickets were dropped into a bucket in front of the prize they wanted to win. At the end of the event, we drew one ticket out of each bucket.

All in all with donations and fundraiser we were able to raise nearly $10,000 to help us pay for our adoption. How blessed are we?!? That left about $2,000 for us to save on our own, and fortunately our tax return covered that. J

I hope that our ideas will help you raise the money you need to get your family started!

Foster Care and Special Needs Adoption

spirit (1)

Webster Dictionary defines Adoption as “The act or process of giving official acceptance or approval to something.” But what does adoption really mean?  As an adult who was adopted as an infant, it means a great deal.  It has meant that I was chosen and loved by a generous and caring couple.  Adoption meant that I gained an older brother who may not be blood related to me, but he would protect me to the end of the world.  As a Child Welfare worker almost 30 years later, the idea of adoption takes on a whole new meaning.  I have seen children come into Foster Care after what seems to be a nightmare of a childhood.  I have seen biological parents turn their lives around and re-create themselves after realizing that they have every possibility of losing their children to “The System.”  But I have also seen children left in the abyss of Foster Care, with parental rights terminated, and no extended family to take them in.  I have had the awful conversation with children who cannot be matched with a “forever family,” and remind them that they are special and deserve to be loved.

But…I have seen a silver lining.  I have watched as the community has come together to meet children who are searching to belong.   I have seen the excitement in a couple’s or individual’s face as I explain to them that adoption from foster care is not only a viable option, but a way to build their family and change a child’s life from negative to positive!

In the spirit of National Adoption Month, I want to invite any families out there to look into the idea of Adoption from Foster Care.  This is also commonly referred to as “Special Needs Adoption.”  Special needs in Child Welfare may range from medically fragile children to those with emotional or behavioral needs.  Children who are in Foster Care have been removed from their biological home based on Child Protective Services (CPS) and a judge ruling that a child has been abused or neglected in their home or by someone responsible for their care.  Biological Parents are given approximately one year to work with the court and the foster care agency in the hopes of resolving their issues and having their children returned home.  If a parent is not able to make these efforts in a reasonable amount of time, then the Foster Care Agency can make a recommendation to “Terminate Parental Rights” to the children in care.   From this point, the Foster Care Agency places the children for adoption.  Children under 14 are automatically given a goal of Adoption, and the search for permanence begins.  Children ages 14 and up have the choice of whether or not they would like to be adopted, or would rather have a goal that leans towards Guardianship, Independent Living, or Emancipation, based on their age and maturity level.  Regardless of their age, there are children asking for a family to call their own.  This is where we need you.  We need families of all kinds to change a child’s life forever.  To help these children know and believe that they are capable of great things, including belonging and being loved.

Special Needs Adoption is a viable possibility throughout the state, and across the country.  Although there are many Child Welfare Agencies throughout Michigan, they are all licensed through the state, and are required to follow certain policies and procedures.  Each county in Michigan has a Child Welfare Department, as well.  These policies may seem a bit excessive as you go through the licensing and adoption process, but they are there in order to maintain the safety of the nearly 13,000 children who are in foster care at any given time.  Policies that are enforced for licensed foster and adoptive parents range from providing regular medical care to the square footage that each bedroom needs to be for the children in your home.  Again, many of the rules may seem basic or invasive, but this is the state’s way of caring for so many children at any given time.  Some agencies may require your home to be licensed in order to adopt from foster care, and others may give an option of having a home study completed without a home being licensed.  In order for a home to be licensed, an agency will assign a worker to go through the home to ensure that it is safe according to state policies.  The Licensing worker will also interview parents, children, and references for the family in order to get a better sense of the family structure and what types of children will do well in the home.  This “Home Study” is then submitted to the state with a recommendation to license a home for children who would be a best fit with the family.

Although the licensing process is a bit more strict, it can also mean longer transition times for the adoptee and the family before making a final decision to adopt or not, and can also mean that the adoption process itself may go quicker.  Either option is extremely less expensive than Infant Adoption, which can range in cost from $10,000 to $30,000 or higher, if you are looking to do International Adoption.  Special Needs Adoptions do not have the high price tag, as these are children who are actively looking for a home, and are waiting with the state in the meantime.  These children feel the loss of not having a family as each day passes.  No matter what you decide, know that there are ways that you can make a difference in a child’s life.  Look below for some great resources about Foster Care and Adoption.  The biggest piece of advice I can give is to simply ask yourself what you can do.  There is no harm in asking, and you may be surprised by the answer you get.

There are many resources that someone can use to learn more about Foster Care and Special Needs Adoption.  The first one that I recommend to anyone considering Special Needs Adoption is the Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange, or MARE.  www.mare.org is a wonderful start in learning more about the licensing and adoption process in your area.  It gives a well-rounded set of information, as well as connections to other resources and photo listings of children who are currently up for adoption.  Wendy’s Wonderful Kids is a community through the Dave Thomas Foundation that helps focuses the efforts to find older children and siblings their forever homes.  Go to www.davethomasfoundation.org for more information, or to help out in any way you can.  You can also call the Foster Parent Navigator Program to become a licensed foster parent, or to learn about the Foster Care and Adoption Agencies in your area!  Visit www.fcnp.org for more information about the Navigators.

Becky Van Etten editBecky Van Etten has worked in Child Welfare for over 4 years, first as a Foster Care Case Manager, and now working as a Foster and Adoptive Home Recruitment and Retention Specialist.  She currently works with foster and adoptive families, training them so that parents are prepared for working with the Michigan Family Court System, the Child Welfare System, and how to address the needs of children in foster care while they are placed in Foster and Adoptive homes.

Weekend Happenings :: In + Around Detroit November 21st -23rd

WH November 21-23

November is here and almost over!  Can you believe it?!  This mom is in denial, all around denial – hello snow storms?!?!?!

After researching what is going on In + Around Metro Detroit this holiday season, I-was-blown-away by all the cool things Metro-Detroit has to offer our {local} families.  I hope these upcoming lists will help you discover something  new + fabulous to do around Metro-Detroit with your family!

My kiddos are all about Christmas and claim to be “ready”!  These were our top 5 X-Mas moments last week….

  1.  The toys’r us catalog arrived in the mail made my 6 YO the happiest kid on the block.  {I’ve been looking for ways to get him excited to write more….grab your pencil buddy, start making those lists!}
  2. The kids movie of the week was Santa Clause {1, 2 + 3!}  with Tim Allen.  4 YO is terrified of the “fake” Santa, I wonder how this years Santa visit is going to go?!
  3. My 4 YO was inspired by the above mentioned movies and wants to be THE next Santa Clause.  His little Santa suit + hat made an appearance every-single-day.
  4. We got to sing most of our favorite holiday songs with 100.3 WNIC!
  5. My 6 YO had the spirit to give away some of his toys to children who were less fortunate than he.  {finally!  but I am pretty sure he just wants to make room for new toys…..!}

This list is LONG and is in order by city.  Please make sure to double check information before any event, as things can change.  Wishing you a joyful weekend!  ~Annette
{P.S.  Stay tuned for next weeks Weekend Happenings sneak peek coming to you early!}
