Wandering the aisles of a bookstore has always been a favorite pastime of mine. More than just selling books, local independent bookstores provide a place for community and connection. Thankfully, we have so many great places to shop for books in + around Detroit.

Here are a few that are worth checking out!

Another Look Books | Taylor

A huge selection of new and used paperback books. They boast many regular customers thanks to a Want List program where they will keep track of what you’ve read and will let you know if something comes in that matches what you like. You can also trade-in books, which makes it a great place for people who read often.

Book Suey | Hamtramck

Home to the only community bookstore cooperative in Hamtramck. Book Suey offers a wide selection including a variety of graphic novels. They host writing and community events. Currently, their hours are limited, but customers can also order online!

Booksweet | Ann Arbor

Located in Ann Arbor’s Northside, Booksweet opened in 2021 when new owners took over the location formerly known as Bookbound. They have worked to expand their youth collection and strive to reflect the community, both in the books it carries and their relationship with customers.

Coreander’s Children’s Bookshoppe | Grosse Pointe Park

A whimsical children’s bookstore complete with a huge selection of books for all ages, toys, and games. The decor includes wall to wall murals and cozy spots to read a book. They also have a cafe and outdoor patio. A must-visit place to shop for books!

John K. King Books | Detroit + Ferndale

This local book store specializes in used and rare books, and has one million books in stock. Yes, one million! They now have two locations: the main location in Detroit, and a second location in Ferndale. A fun place to explore for any book lover!

Literati Bookstore | Ann Arbor

Named “Bookstore of the Year” by Publisher’s Weekly in 2019, Literati hosts in-person and virtual author readings and book clubs. In the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, it’s a perfect pitstop when visiting the city!

Pages Bookshop | Detroit

A friendly neighborhood bookstore in Northwest Detroit! Pages Bookshop is home to a curated collection of books for all ages and book-related gifts for the book lovers in your life.

Sidetrack Bookshop | Royal Oak

A curated selection of books, with the mission of building community. Sidetrack hosts story times and book clubs. It’s a convenient place to shop when visiting the Royal Oak area!

Source Booksellers | Detroit

Located in Midtown, Source Booksellers offers a unique niche of non-fiction books. They’re committed to spotlighting women authors and also carries a selection of poetry, science fiction, and astrology titles, as well as graphic novels.

The Book Beat | Oak Park

A local favorite, with a wide selection including rare and out of print books. The Book Beat is known for excellent customer service and staff recommendations. The children’s section can’t be beat!

Toadvine Books | Berkley

Toadvine Books offers quality new and used fiction, sci fi, children’s, young adult, and rare books, as well as small press comics, zines, and graphic novels. In their store, you’ll see books from floor to ceiling, with a huge blue comfy chair to cozy up in.
